Me and a friend have been in bands together for years. We listen to all genres of music and have been wanting to do some hip hop stuff for fun. We wrote and recorded a track last night. Just wanted to get some peoples opinion on it that listen to this kind of stuff. We were goin for style along the lines of Lupe Fiasco, kid Cudi, stuff like that.

what do you use? ProTools? I don't like how you use the quadruple kick in your song. Kinda distracting

Thanks for some constructive criticism man, we thought about the same thing. But decided to keep it. The recording was done on a digital recorder, We did the beat and the mastering on FL studio

I used to do beats on my laptop with FL, then moved to another computer with ProTools, then said fuck it, I'd rather rap instead because all I needed was a pen and pad. I think I'm better off rapping than making beats (I have no patience most times and end up not finishing some of my beats. It gets too technical for my liking)

There's something off about the way it sounds. Like it's needlessly echoish, I think. Piano needs to be toned down because that old school beat is fucking sick, but is getting drowned out. Ditch the auto-tuned part, for real. You'd be better off singing it all monotone like the hook on this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2Fe2s1KcR4).

The rhymes are kinda basic, like you're new to this. Your bars are weird because it's like the way all the Young Money rappers (Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj etc) do that disjointed half a line/pause/quick phrase thing, but you lose the beat in the process.

You'll get better over time and pretty good for a first effort. BTW, didn't you say some time ago that you weren't into rap at all?

Yeah man, i've been in metal bands most of my life. used to listen to rap back in the day, but then got into metal and didn't really give hip hop a second chance until now, just recently have been getting back into it. This was our first attempt at doing it ourselves. Just thought it would be something fun to do. We've already started working on the next track, so this will help out.

I'm more interested in MCing in a live hip-hop band (guitars and drums etc) but I originally got my start with the typical route with beats and ProTools. Made tons of songs with the various members from Smearcamp, but not as a member of the group. More like a satellite member/side project. I know I can hang with these guys, but I'd rather go my own way do my own thing with a live band. I only have my material on CDs, not in vids yet.
