View Full Version : The Royal Rumble - Entertaining, But Overdone

40 superstars this year. Sounds awesome. But doesn't leave anyone for singles matches.
Personally, I would like to see the IC and US titles defended, as well as the tag championships.
It seems as though they don't start making feuds for WM until after the RR. Why? Only a couple interesting feuds can come out of the RR when it focuses completely on the winner main-eventing 'Mania.
The feuds going into WM don't feel like they're big enough for the ppv, since they've had little time to develop. I dont want to see a 3-week feud that I don't care about on the card for WM.
Perhaps I'm just thinking too much about it. I dunno...just my take on it.
Any thoughts?

there will be singles matches as the typical rumble participants participate in both matches and the rumble.
Its' my favorite match of the year generally.

True.
Dont get me wrong. I love the Rumble match... I'd just like to see more and better feuds for the biggest show of the year. And since the "Road to WM" begins at the RR, more feuds should either begin or develop further.
What? The Rumble is pretty important. Yes, there's very few feuds that are truely starting up until after the Rumble, but you also have to remember that they have the Elimination Chamber.
And as Schlomey said, outside of the world title matches, undercard participants tend to get into the Rumble itself.
And the Rumble match usually is a place where feuds start. Guys will go at it, or it'll continue feuds.
As for this year, I think it's obvious we're getting Triple H vs Sheamus on the card, and that's had a year or so to build. Same with Taker's situation, with the burial.
Could they do a better job of building up matches for Mania? Of course. But WWE doesn't book long-term anymore. The fact that we have two possible matches with such a long build is quite out of the ordinary.
Also, you don't even know what matches will be on Mania outside of speculation. Any feud currently on-going could go straight through to Mania.

I would happily scrap all other matches for a 3 hour rumble with a returning Sean Stasiak.

I dont think we will get Sheamus vs HHH on the RR card (not sure if u meant RR or WM)
But we will definetley see it at WM. I expect HHH to eliminate himself and Sheamus at the same time if HHH is involved in the match.

Yeah I meant Mania.
Of all the things "overdone" by WWE (Gimmick PPVs for example) the Rumble is the least of their concerns.
It's once a year, it's an institution and it sets up the biggest match of the year. It should have all the focus on it. I hated it when they had Angle v Henry go on AFTER the Rumble match a few years back.

Angle vs Henry? Really? I must not have been watching at the time.

Planet Stasiak wasn't a gimmick. It was a way of life.

They had to though. They were doing a ring collapse spot which would have obviously ruined the Royal Rumble.
Throw the opponent off the canvassed area as there's no ropes dent have the same ring to it.

Yeah but Henry main eventing? Especially one of the "Big 4?" I wouldn't have Henry main event anything...not even Shotgun Saturday Night (r.i.p.)

It was actually a good match. Around that time, Mark Henry looked a threat with the way he was pushed and of course, Kurt carried him, but it turned out well.

o0...clarification...I didnt mean the concept of the RR is overdone...but having 40 people is overkill imo.

Complete opposite for me. It's a nice little twist on the familiar format.
Also, maybe you think about the terminology of your thread titles?

Sounds to me like someone changed the subject of their thread when they saw no one agreed with them.
(i'm being a dick today, its been a shitty day and I want to take it out on Eklipse).
I will be interested in seeing how this 40 man rumble goes off. I dont want to see a cluster fuck like WCW's World War 3 battle royal was, so I hope they space it well.

Mark Henry vs Kurt Angle in the main event is still better than Brock Lesnar vs Hardcore Holly in the main event in 04.
This is the only time of the yr I get excited about wrestling.
Stop being a massive buzzkill you fucker.

Nope. Just bad thread title.
As said in my first, un-edited post, I just want more singles matches at RR and better feuds (besides RR winner vs whoever) leading into WM.

Kayfabe wise, who would rather try to capture the IC title rather than enter the rumble for a spot at Mania? Would make all the sense in the world to only have the two main belts defended along with the typical divas match.
Mark Henry vs Kurt Angle in the main event is still better than Brock Lesnar vs Hardcore Holly in the main event in 04.
Maybe. Except for the fact that Lesnar/Holly wasn't the Main Event. It might have been a Title Match but it wasn't the Main Event. In fact, it wasn't even the top billed Title match as HHH v HBK was.

Kaval maybe?

Other then the main title matches the only thing they should be focusing on is The Rumble itself to me this is the best event at a PPV all year long largely due the endless possible scenarios.
Speaking of the undercard, not too pumped for Orton/Miz, but Edge vs Ziggler really intrigues me and is a match I'm truly looking forward to.

This ppv is only to balance out the numbers in royal rumbles. The first Royal Rumble had 20 members, so this one has 40 to even out the averages.

Who the fuck cares about the average number of Rumble participants?
Also, to the thread starter, if it's entertaining, what else do you need from it?

Long as the match is exciting, they can devote the entire PPV to it.
Indeed. The undercard matches are just "filler" to me.

I love that there are only two matches announced and the Rumble. I am sure a diva's match will get thrown on but only selling three matches, plus this biggest match in WWE history is fucking brilliant.
This match has such an old school vibe, there are so many options of winners. JR stated in his blog that the Rumble was short on star power, I disagree.
Cena, Punk, Barrett, Del Rio, are the front runners I think, and then the outside chance of Rey Mysterio, Kane, John Morrison, Sheamus, and Big Show... now don't forget we also have an imminent New Nexus vs The Core showdown. As well as a likely entertaining underdog story with Mark Henry coming close.
As well as Daniel Bryan, Drew McScots, Rhodes, Diabiase, R-Truth, Kofi, Swagger, and Santino & Kozlov.
Now take all those guys think about the programs they have had over the past year and I be we are going to see some major entertaining and compelling intersection in the Rumble.
Now all of those guys are over with the WWE Universe and have personality but don't forget we also have potential returns of Triple H, The Undertaker, Christian, Evan Bourne, Skip Sheffield, and Michael Tarver. As well as the potential of Amazing Kong debuting in some form or fashion. In my fantasy land she helps CM Punk win the whole damn thing.
All in all I am sold on the kayfabe and totally anticipating this PPV more than anything since the last Wrestlemania. And most of the excitement is because of the addition of 10 more superstars, which makes things very hard to predict.

Yeah, they can be fun, but it's usually the Rumble that you remember anyway.
i hate when the Rumble is upstaged, even if it's a good match.

Well that's why they have matches like Ziggler/Edge or Angle/Henry or Holly/Lesnar, it just makes sense seeing as you have a HUGE match coming. Never should the title match main event The Rumble though.
