View Full Version : How do you prefer to watch a movie?
Pretty simple.
Do you prefer to go to the cinema and watch it on the big screen? Do you prefer a packed out auditorium or do you prefer it to be pretty empty? Do you have a preference as to where you sit? Snacks?
Or do you prefer to watch at home? If so, why? And what's your setup? Blu-ray/DVD? Screen size? etc.

Overall home is the best coz you can 'put your feet up', relax, cook etc, but cinema is just one of those things that's gotta be done if it's one of those films that'll look great on the big screen.
I never eat at cinemas, and very rarely do I drink. Mostly coz food and drink are so expensive, plus it makes you need a piss. Not really bothered where I sit, but never at the front since you've got to look up and shit.
If it's crowded I prefer it somewhere near the back, don't usually like having so many people behind me for some reason, but then I don't usually see films until they're a week or two old, in which case most people have already seen it and the theater is empty. So I sit near the middle. And with hardly anyone there, you can put your feet up over the seat infront of you. When I went to see Spider-Man 3 I saw it on the last day, there were four people there, including me.

It all depends on the movie. If you are watching a comedy, midnight movie, a lot of cult movies. Not only do I want a packed audience, but I want it later into the night. Seeing a movie like Black Dynamite, Pink Flamingos at 3pm just doesn't make sense to me.
But for more drama films, I prefer to watch it alone it the comfort of my home. I feel I get a much better emotional experience out of it.
Action films and bad movies I prefer at home with friends so you can comment and make jokes on the movie as it goes along.
Depends.
I like going to the cinema with a group of people, sit in the back and drink the entire movie laughing at random shit.
I like watching it at home, so when I need to shit, I just pause it, or I randomly get a boner, I jerk it.

My friend used to work at the local "independent" movie theatre around here so I only really go with him since we get in for free and get free food and drink if we want it. But we still don't go that often.
Personally I hate being in a packed cinema cos more often than not it's full of kids/idiots that talk through the film or laugh at inappropriate times (I recall going to see Paranormal Activity 2 the other month and they ruined the build of tension with the inane laughter).
I prefer a less busy cinema as I don't have to get up every 10 minutes to let someone go to the toilet. I usually have one of those Icy Drinks. And I like to sit around the middle of the middle row.
But home is a very close second (don't have to deal with the stupid public) especially now I have a Blu-ray player and 32inch 1080p LED TV :)

I tend to not see dramas or comedy movies in the theater. I save the theater for action/adventure movies.
Just seems that the big screen doesn't add much to drama/comedy while it adds a lot in action/adventure.
When I watch movies at home, I like to watch them after the sun has set, and I close all the lights to kind of "recreate" the atmosphere of the cinema, if not the size of the screen. Because that part I like no matter what movie.

We definetely go to the same screening one day.
Remember when I went to the cinema to see Star Wars: Episode III with the girlfriend, cause I had free tickets.
The scene when that guy finally transformed into Darth Vader bunch of nerds in the back started clapping and cheering. The rest of the crowd just turned their heads, staring at them. They looked so embarassed it was satisfying.

I prefer watching movies in the comfort of my own home. Id rather not be annoyed by teens talking and being obnoxious, people laughing at not funny things, and the clapping at the end of a movie.
At home w/ pot, off the flash drive or streamed from the laptop, both through the PS3, HD if I can be arsed with the file taking longer to download etc.

Certain movies i will see in theater but I will wait until its a time of day when it won't be as busy. I prefer to sit about 5th row in the center .I never buy drinks or food there, if i want something i will just sneak it in.
Other movies I will wait till it comes out on video so I can watch it here in comfort.

Action movies, always would rather see them in the theater.
Everything else, at home with friends.

My favorite is watching it in a theater that has maybe 10-15 "college educated 20somethings" and like 10 really old people. Those are the best audiences.

I prefer seeing just about everything in the theater. To me, it's always the better experience.
I don't seem to notice or get turned off by the crowds like a lot of people seem to complain about. So many friends and people I know seem to feel that going to the movies is intolerable if there are other human beings there.
But even though I like watching movies at home, I still want to go out and see them. Watching them in my house "isn't the same."
For me, the theater is all pros. I feel like the theater is a fully different experience, and I enjoy and often become immersed in the movie way more. Even if it's one I've seen 1,000 times.
Just last year I saw Halloween and Back to the Future, and a few other classics (and a Hitchcock marathon) on the "big screen," and they were so incredibly different.
If it's a movie you haven't seen, you are getting the proper experience. If it's a movie you've seen, you are far more likely to uncover new things on-screen or in the film (didn't want to say sub-text. Sounds mad pretentious.)
It also makes it easier to pledge my complete attention.
I kinda like to envision certain movies as they exist(ed) in a theater too. That's how they're concieved.
For big event pictures, horror movies, comedies and cult classics, I also feel the bigger the crowd the better.
I tend to enjoy a large, raucous crowd for those types of movies. Especially since the crowd tends to know when to be active and when not to, rather than just being annoying.
I care less about the crowd for something like a drama or thriller, since it's a different experience. I actually value seeing certain films in theaters with next to no audience.
Or no audience at all, besides me.
I enjoy seeing a movie "alone" in the theater, a lot. I've done it quite a few times, or with a handful of random solo viewers.
So it depends, but always in the theater.

I don't like huge crowds.
I like it best when there are a handful of couples and what not. I like listening to what old people say after previews.

I download it and watch it at home.
Fuck the theater, rip off bastards
It's not just the presence of other people in and of itself, you shoudl anticipate other people being there after all. It's the type of person and how they carry themselves.
People have paid a lot (in context) to go see a movie, don't ruin it for them by talking/laughing through the whole thing or putting your feet in the back of their chair.
I love the cinema experiece, like Jeritron said, movies are made for the big screen it's just a shame that everybody doesn't share that same value.

I like going to the theater but only when literally no one else is there
It's kind of sad that you can get the best nachos at theaters here.
So I like going there for the nachos.
I prefer to watch a movie with my dick in a girl's mouth.

I like going to the movies with friends but with like an empty room.
I love midnight showings of new movies. Most of the time it's a packed house and you get this feeling from so many different people who don't know each other taking the same ride at the same time, and usually there aren't as many loud obnoxious people at midnight showings as if you're going to a midnight show it's because you want to watch the movie, not crack jokes with your jackass friends. There's a certain vibe about it.
I hate going pretty much anytime after that first opening night and then for the next 2 weeks after. That's when the jackasses come out; the loud assholes and cell phone talkers/texters. I have been known to tell people to shut the fuck up during a movie, or to shut off their cell phone as it's distracting me. And even though they usually comply, it generally ruins the entire experience for me.
If I miss the midnight opener, I'll go in like 3-4 weeks later, right before it's about to leave the theaters, and I'll pick the least popular theater in the area so I know there will be less people.
Also smoking weed before a movie and then buying popcorn and a drink is the best. Sneaking in a flask is also the way to go, IMO.
Fuck midnight showings.
Last time I've been to a midnight showing it was Lord of the Rings. Paid a shitload of money and fell asleep like 5 minutes into the movie.
