Question about volume control

My computer won't let me have the volume control on the tool bar anymore. What's up with that?

This happened to me all of suddenly recently. I have Win7 and I clicked on the arrow that said Show Hidden Icons then Customize. There I went to the volume icon and selected to hide it and clicked OK. Then repeated the process but this time selected to show it. Then I restarted and it's back.
