Only Radiohead could get me to drop $48.00 on an album when I haven't purchased one in over a decade

Obviously I haven't been this excited for anything in a long time.

This is going to be a very slow week.

I was at the dentist yesterday twiddling my thumbs during my fillings because I was so happy because of this. I dropped 90 to import the In Rainbows special edition, so 48 bucks seems like a steal to me.

Still need to get a vinyl player of my own :-\

One of the songs Thom played on some solo dates. Like hearing it in a full band version. And of course, they had to get some "Thom dancing" in the video.

Released a day early, ladies and gentleman. Too bad I'm at work right now. Gonna try and sneak it in somehow.

Meh, pretty forgettable album. Listened to it all the way through once and honestly nothing really stood out for me. Kinda irritated by a couple of the songs even with the way they used the 'clicks' for helping with the beat or something. Dunno, pretty underwhelming effort.

I listened to it on my work netbook, so I'm not judging anything I listened to yet. But knowing my history with Radiohead, I doubt I will be disappointed.

I'm on Codex right now. It's all really good so far, but like req, nothing has really stood out for me, like some of my fav radiohead tracks have in the past.

I know that it is Radiohead but is it worth purchasing?

Fignuts
02-18-2011, 06:20 PM
Frankly, no. Cheapest digital version is 9 dollars and there are only 8 songs.

just finished my first listen through. i don't hate it, but it certainly doesn't jump out at me like most of what they've done in the past. obviously, it's going to get more and more listens, but i'm just not so sure how many of these songs i'll be wanting to listen to in a year or so.

I'll probably pick this album up. What I've heard so far is pretty good, and vintage Radiohead is one hell of a standard to live up to.

I woke up this morning and I enjoyed my listen 10x more. Need a little while to rank it with the other stuff though.

Don't really see this at all actually. Radiohead has been using glitchy, trippy effects for the last 11 years. Panda Bear's trademark to me is really more insanely catchy/multilayered melodies, don't really get this here.

Feels like a culmination of everything they've done so far, including The Eraser. Really like Morning Mr Magpie, Codex, and Seperator. Also, not a bad track on the album.

Definitely doesn't disappoint, but didn't blow me out of the water either (still a great album, tho). I really really admire it, especially on a technical level, but I'm not sure if I can say I "love" it.

I feel like I will probably never listen to this album a second time but I was never really a big Radiohead fan. Shouldn't even be making this post.

Ivfeel like the sampling on blooM is similiar to some panda bear stuff. But having listened to it 12 more times I'd say it's much more like burial.

It doesn't sound like Panda Bear at all, I don't know what he's talking about.

FakeLaser
02-20-2011, 10:39 AM
If I were to compare it to a past Radiohead album I'd say it's most like In Rainbows, but slower paced like Amnesiac.

There's a lot of sampling but Radiohead has relied heavily on sampling since Kid A. It's not like Panda Bear innovated sampling. If Radiohead was influenced by any artist's usage of sampling it's probably DJ Shadow or Aphex Twin. It's way more "glitchy" than anything Panda Bear has ever done.

It's a very beautiful album. In a dark kind of way. Like pretty much all Radiohead. This isn't a dramatic shift of sound like Kid A or anything like that. There's a lot more emphasis on drumming in this album, that's the main difference I see from past Radiohead albums.

Bloom is probably my favorite track. I love Codex and Seperator as well. I'm not sure where this fits in with their other albums yet. I will say that it hasn't "blown my mind" off the bat like In Rainbows, OK Computer or Kid A did right off the bat. I'd say it's somewhere in Hail To The Thief territory, really fucking good but not a straight up CLASSIC. I've only listened through twice thus far though. It may change for better or for worse.

I also don't think this is it. It's wayyyyy too short at 37 minutes. I think there's gonna be some more tracks in the actual release.

God Codex is so good

Buzzkill

Definitely seems closest to The Eraser/Amnesiac to me. With In Rainbows, I felt like you could really sense the band coming together as a whole to create the album, where with this it seems like Thom Yorke is really indulging himself throughout. Not that that's a bad thing.

Damn, I've listened to this a good 5 more times and I'm really starting to dig it. Lyrically it's great, and I'm starting to "get" a few of the more obscure songs.

Codex is so fucking good. Lyrics pair with the sound beautifully.

Also, you definiteily need some good headphones with deep bass to get the full experience. Been using my friend's "Beats by Dr. Dre".

I checked them out at a Best Buy outlet. They weren't really that good. I have used a pair of Skull Candy in ear headphones so I assume that there might be something wrong with the model on display :-\

I think it's a good album. It's pretty cool that they are still trying different things this late into their career, instead of just coasting like most other bands do. Still need to listen to this more though.

I have a theory on that- that Coldplay is the band Radiohead would have been if they kept releasing songs like Creep instead of experimenting with their sounds. The former's gotten kinda stale, while, as the FakeRazor quote says, people are willing to shell out nearly $50 merely on the fact that it's Radiohead. That should tell you something about the quality.

I like the album. Morning Mr. Magpie and Lotus Flower are my favorites. It's nowhere near being their best album, but it still manages to be the best new music I've heard this year.
