View Full Version : Talking about Wrestling In the Real World

I used to work at a grocery store that had a few wrestling fans. I went over there the other day and talked with one of my friends who worked their about the Royal Rumble (which he went to.) He said he was pretty upset that Alberto Del Rio won the Royal Rumble which I kind of knew he was going to say because he is a stereotypical face-mark.

When we talked about the Nexus the last time I was there he was like fuck Nexus. When Randy Orton was a heel it was Fuck Orton, but now he loves him to death.

Is this a typical expierence for people who talk about wrestling in the real world? Is there really more face marks out there then I realize?

it's probably typical for people who work in grocery stores

I had an employee one time who loved John Cena to death, fuckin super-mark for him. We use to talk about wrestling a lot, and I would say something bad about him just to set her off and she would go crazy defending him.

Of course, she was a crack head, so that didnt help.

I didnt think anyone talked about wrestling in the real world, hence why we come on internet message boards to talk to strangers.

I only know two guys at work who watch wrestling, 1s ok the other could be related to the 'Its still real to me' guy.

Your friend who wasn't happy about Del Rio winning the rumble has no right to hate on Del Rio since he works at a grocery store

not too many of my friends follow wrestling anymore..... one guy still does and he is a total mark for Jeff Hardy.... it's quite sad......

Unfortunately most of the wrestling fans I've met and talked to at bars that show WWE PPV's have been major marks. They get super pissed about the results and most of them are huge Cena/Taker/Mysterio fans and hate on all the heels. I started clapping when CM Punk cashed in MITB against Jeff Hardy and they stared me down like I had insulted baby Jesus. When Sheamus won the WWE Title off Cena at TLC one guy actually threw down his beer and walked out (then came back because he realized he hadn't paid yet). I've met a few "smart" fans out and about, but yeah, most conversations about wrestling in the real world are usually pretty moronic.

Most of my actual friends that I actually spend any time with, especially my 'main group' are either wrestlers/a part of 'the business'/were at one point 'part of the business'/have had varying levels of training etc etc so the conversations tend to be fine for the most part. I tend to try and avoid wrestling or just nod and smile along with most others that want to talk about it though.

Not friends with any wrestling fans really, and when I try to explain my fandom to people, I tend to get some variation of: "So you watch fights...that the endings are already pre-planned...and they aren't actually hitting each other?"

It seems like no one understands that watching pre-scripted fights is no different than watching pre-scripted anything. If you're watching, say, Lost, the endings already determined, and you suspend belief to watch.

...maybe that was a bad example, but you know what I mean.

Had one mate a few years ago who would randomly start wrestling conversations on the bus or at college, hated every bit of it but went along with it feeling like a twat while doing so. Just doesn't feel right to me, much more suited for forums imo. Can't understand total marks though, they do my head in abit.

We need to hang out so you can show me these fools, beer on me. I will wear every heels shirt just to piss em off if it works.

I'd say a mix of the two roughly 60% heel and 40% face.

Most of the people I hang out with, who I actually talk to about wrestling are mostly mocking it.

I've gotten some of them to watch some WMs with me, but most are like "Oh nonononononononononono - it's sooo fake - OMG!" - I usually just go "That might be, but it's better than the shit you watch on tv anyway"

I really wish I had friends who were marks - that would be quite fun! :)
(as it might be relevant I should mention that I live in Europe)

LOL at people thinking they're better than marks, you fucking arrogant pricks. Like you're so great. At least they watch wrestling for enjoyment instead of watching it so they can cry like little bitches about the booking.

I would agree.
Watching something that is intended as entertainment, as something other than entertainment is silly.
However I would maybe say that the difference isn't much different than what goes on between people who watch football just for the tackles and catches, and those who are really updated on the scores, who are really into the scores and who knows the consequences of the match the are watching.
Everybody has a different vantage point - and as far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter why you watch it - or don't watch it - but just don't be an ass about people watching/not watching it!

Oh look there goes supreme again jumping to conclusions. So sad. Dunno if you can i say i don't watch wrestling for enjoyment especially after last few days of my posts. Twat.

TL, you gotta understand something, buddy. There are so many terrible posters in the world. It's really hard to keep you all separated. And if in 20,000 posts you haven't done anything to stand out... yikes.

Troelar

it wasn't

That wont stop me pretending!

Oh eeh On topic: I like showing more than telling. During the last few years I've put my fair share of "wrestling is fake" peeps into a figure four.
It's the most fun when people are like "I can totally get out of anything", yet can't get out of the figure four...

People who criticize wrestling for being fake are retarded. Everything on television is fake. That's the point. It's scripted for entertainment. Who gives a fuck

I don't really care if i don't 'stand out'. I just come here to discuss stuff when im in the mood to. Its not about thinking 'i matter' or whatever. But anyway, this is getting off topic.

I don't talk to wrestling marks anymore. They're dumb.

I was talking to this girl the other day at work. She said she likes John Cena. I said "John Cena sucks" and shes like "No." I said "Yeah. He's terrible." She's not convinced that John Cena sucks yet. Then again, she's not a wrestling fan, so she doesn't know anything.

Like 99% people here only know Hulk Hogan so I don't ever talk wrestling in real life.

I had a very humorous conversation with someone who was convinced that Chris Jericho ended Goldberg's undefeated streak in WCW. I didn't have the heart to break it to them that it wasn't him.

I had a friend who tuned in when The Rock came back in 2011, but couldn't believe The Miz and tuned out. I haven't really had too many recent conversations. I did watch a couple of shows with a friend quite recently and she hated Kevin Owens and Dolph Ziggler, which I found really funny for some reason.

Well, I did show some stuff to a buddy who was staying over, but it was mostly botches and funny stuff. When he saw Sid break his leg he looked like he was about to puke. Was impressed with Shane's titantron elbow drop, though. He was like "How is he not dead?"

One of the managers in my department was a huge wrestling fan so we'd talk about it pretty much every week. But he left a few months ago so that was that.

I was telling one of my best friends about some of the particularly absurd stuff that's happened in wrestling and he thought I was making it all up. Largely though none of my friends care about wrestling and I doubt anything will change that, so I seldom if ever bring it up.
