K so all like "writers' decisions" and the reasonings etc etc etc for it aside, why is Randy Orton a face?
Like whenever I watch Raw, I see nothing about Orton that makes me think a typical fan should cheer him. It doesn't make sense. He crawls around like a creep and looks like a pedophile and has absolutely nothing interesting about him to cheer for. What is the deal? Is it literally just, "He beats up bad guys" that makes him a face? I don't know. Fuck this guy. Bob Sanders.

girls think he's OMG HAWT
He's pretty much a face because of the crowd reactions he was getting toward the end of his heel run. They really had no choice but to just go with it.
Well, I guess they did have a choice, but it was just easier to go with the crowd reactions.

His RKO's are sorta like Stone Cold's stunners, i think that's why he gets the crowd reactions he does. I do find him boring in the ring though sometimes.

I don't really think there's necessarily faces and heels anymore. Not in the same context that there was years ago where faces were always morally good and the heels would cheat, etc. It's really either the crowd likes you or doesn't like you. There are some exceptions. It's really all the matter of you side with, feud with, etc.
Orton is aligned with Cena right now, feuding with Nexus. His antics are going to be acceptable unless they're done to a "babyface" more over than him. So really only Cena could turn him heel at this point in my opinion.

Cena is a giant gay and needs to turn heel too though. But at least with Cena I can see why he is a face. He interacts positively with fans, has catchphrases and wears fruity pebbles shirts ETC ETC ETC.
Orton on the other hand is just like...... ?! He's there. Why do I want to cheer this guy? Because he's feuding with Nexus? That's the only real reason I got out of that. I don't understaaaaaaaaaaand.
Honestly if it's just a matter of feuding with "wrestler/stable X" makes you a face/heel, then that is lazy writing.

Keep in mind that the Randy Orton we see is only the guy that appears to us on television. We don't see how he interacts with fans at bars, autographing events, things like that. He also recently had a kid, which I think has calmed him down a bit for the better.

I think if he punted his kid at a fan in a wheelchair he would solidify himself as a fan favourite wrestler.

Fans started to cheer him and WWE, in a rare occurrence, actually listened. WWE did that with Santino and I can't think of the last person they turned face or hell because of immense crowd reactions
Has anyone else noticed that randy grew a wee bit of hair for his face run?

On RAW right when they were having the big brawl and Punk was double teamed by Orton and Cena... I was expecting Orton to RKO Cena afterwards. Take 30 seconds, then SLAM!
But no... apparently they're best of friends (even though Randy recently made that whole 'in 2011 I'm gonna be tougher and not go all soft and shit' speech)
Punk was double teamed by Orton and Cena...

Stupid fucking wrestling fans.
He's the VIPER.
He just so happens to be paired up against major heels at the moment.
Doesn't mean he won't punt people to the head, specially Cena if provoked.

I went to Raw in September. It was the one where Cena and Orton sent every single member of Nexus through tables, if you recall. After the show went off the air, Orton stood on the ramp, appealing to the crowd, bowing, and saying "thank you". He even went up to a girl with a sign that said "KISS ME RANDY", and he went over and kissed her on the cheek.
That all seems pretty babyface to me.
Let's also not forget where he hugged it out with Cena after Cena got "fired".

Last year, Orton was super over. He was getting CRAZY pops.
I haven't noticed lately if he still is, but what I HAVE noticed is that he is pretty bland...I mean, the WWE has pushed him to the moon, they've thrown "the machine" behind him, and he still hasn't gotten to the "next level"...I truly think it has to do with him not having great charisma.
And if he hasn't reached the next level by now, I doubt he ever will.
And when I say "next level", I mean GREATNESS. Like, Triple H, HBK, Austin, Rock, Undertaker...heck, even Cena has reached that level. But not Orton.

I like this thread, as I've never understood the way Orton was booked. Not to say it's been bad. And you'd be hard pressed to say it hasn't worked out for him...
His move-set and mannerisms in the ring haven't changed that much from when he won the Rumble and faced HHH at Wrestlemania and got squashed, when he was meant to be in full heel mode. Although he did get a great pop when he entered the rumble.
I would like to think he could go back to being the arrogant Legend Killer gimmick, but it's probably not in the cards. Plus by posing more to the crowd, he'd get booed.
He's probably the Randy Orton from a parallel universe where heels are faces and vice versa... :shifty:

Based on how easily Rock buried Cena on Raw with one hand gesture, it'd be hard to say that even super-Cena was expected to reach anywhere near Rock or Austin level...
Austin > Rock > [ giant void ] > Cena > Orton

Cause you touch yourself at night.
WWE actually did Orton's face turn right. If a heel is getting pops all you have to do to maintain or build on that is change his focus from attacking faces to attacking heels. This is where they went wrong with him in 05 and something that I think Cena suffers from - they go face and start kissing up to fans/being a nice guy.
Having said that the logic of his actions and face status don't always make sense.
I saw it posted around here somewhere recently but look at Punk v Orton. Punk costs Orton the belt as retribution for Orton doing the same to him a couple years back. Instead of Orton being all "Well I guess that's fair" and "We're even" he's like "I'm gonna kick your ass for costing me the title".
If anything Punk is should be the face in this situation. Logically.
But there's little room for logic in wrestling.
Like has been said, Orton and Cena have kicked chunks out of each other for the past few years, then Orton hugs the guy as he is fired. Or Orton himself, who spent most of his career attacking old men or booting people in the temple is suddenly forgiven for those actions when he turns face.

Yep, they did it much better this time. How they fucked up after SummerSlam is beyond me... oh wait, putting the title on HHH, that was it.
This time, it was the little things that made the difference for me. While he was a heel building into a face during the Legacy stable, he posed on the ropes without doing his arm thing. Then the night that his turn was completed, he did the arm thing and the crowd loved it. From that point on, he was a face again. They made it so definable, it was great.

They put the belt on Triple H because Orton proved he wasn't ready to carry the ball, so they put it back on the man who could carry the ball between the shoulder blades of his massive and entertaining back.

Orton didn't even get to win a PPV as champ... that's rough.
It's not like Triple H was exactly short of title runs around that time. Didn't he win a vacated title that he had vacated? Was that the only competition he could find, himself?

It isn't about giving everyone equal time, it is about putting the belt on a fucking DRAW. Triple H was the best way to put asses in seats since Orton flopped miserably.

Orton wasn't ready. Had no beef with the strap going back to Triple H.
Punting yr downed opponent in the face while he isnt looking never struck me as something a 'good guy' would do.

I liken it to simply the fact that the pool of talent is slim, and Orton's been around for almost a decade now and probably want to see how they can market him.
Remember his first heel turn when Evolution threw him under the bus years ago? When he'd walk out with that generic gothic new age rock song, with a big smile on his face?
That didn't get him over as a face, especially since he's so good at being a heel.
Well this Viper gimmick is working and WWE is looking to stick with it, at least for now.
Again, not many big name faces in the 'E and it's saying something when John Morrison (whom I like) is involved in the Elimination Chamber.
