View Full Version : X-Men: Why Does Cyplos Have a Job?

I was never a huge reader of the X-Men comics, but Cyclops rarely seems to add anything, and in most media he seems to be a dick. I get that the team needs a leader, but tons of other people have done that. I get that destructive eye blasts are useful, but he's hardly the only guy who provides that.

Modern version of the X-Men don't even stick to the original team makeup, and he doesn't seem to do much or add anything, so....Any ideas why?

Teen Cyclops was a major asshole, and he "matured" into a responsible leader. At least that's how I know it.

He makes the hard decisions that no one else can!!

Or more likely, just because of the sense of tradition and history. Either Cyclops or Professor X has to be in charge of the X-Men.

He was always boring. That's why he never got his own series.(No cyclops and phoenix doesn't count.)

The evnts of the last few years have shaped him into a bit of a deeper, more interesting character, I'll say that much. His decisions during the big X crossovers, particularly the formation of x-force, as well as stepping up as the leader of all mutantkind.

Also, totally thought this was a BDC thread when I first saw it.

Comics are politically correct, so there's a need for a fag in the team.

X-Men: Gifted (the first Astonishing arc) and some panels from House of M cover the bases of to why Cyke is and always will be team leader (save for the occasional high concept movie death or TV show premise). He's the physical representation of Xavier's dream, dedicated and mostly trustworthy. He's always down for the cause and unlike Logan or Gambit who has the random solo adventure - Cyke is always an X-Man.

That of course is a convenient explanation for his lack of solo interest, the last Cyclops solo went mostly unnoticed.

So yeah his place in the X-Men is largely due to his IRL status of not being interesting enough for solo adventures, but that adds to his character in a way. Keeps him focused. And I like knowing he's not one of those guys on the cover of 7 books a month. He's not a favorite or anything but I totally dig old Scott.

His work with Sinister was cool.

I thought it was because he was good at team tactics.

Comics are politically correct, so there's a need for a fag in the team.

I'd think Angel (Come on, he has big fluffy wings!), Gambit (Faux French is close enough!) or Beast (Totally a bear) would fill that role well enough.

Cyclops is just a bitch. Like Sascha with optic blasts.

I thought it was because he was good at team tactics.

Again, this may be my limited experience with the comics, but while I've heard that many times, I don't think I've ever seen it. It always seems to me like it violates the basic principle of "Show, don't tell."

And I know I could be utterly wrong here. I spent more time reading Spider-Man and Daredevil than X-Men. Maybe I read the wrong comics. or the wrong time periods. Or whatever. But it's never seemed like he has any real tactical abilities to show in the comics. And especially not inthe movies, cartoons, etc.

He has Captain America-esque gameplans. Almost always comes out on top.

... don't you mean "don't ask, don't tell?"

Storm has pretty much been a dependable leader, and has character and depth to boot. Scotty is just a suck-ass and the Prof's bitch, who seems to have failed his way upwards. In fact, I'd say the best way to describe Cyke is that he's just like the new Star Trek's version of Kirk, just devoid of ANY of the charm.

Maybe its because hes the first mutant prof X recruited? I honestly dont like cyclops and never really thought he was a great leader. Plus didnt he abandon the xmen to create xfactor?

Hes the only mutant that has shown the ability to single handedly destroy mr sinister.

Hes currently banging emma frost.

He has taken full control over the xmen and xmansion and has even demanded that xavior leave.

Formed the mutant utopia

Was the leader of all mutants during messiah complex and second coming

Formed the first x-factor and dispatches the most current x-force

and is now combating the new mutant vampires

Gifted and House of M. Put that on your queue.

Those are both fairly recent. You telling me it took them almost 50 years of development to give Cyke some legit time to shine?

Not so much when you're a dyslexic on painkillers due to a rather large chunk of your leg being missing.

No you're not. You're lazy. That's why I hold you to it.

You might as well tell me you're a tranny, too.

...Though it would explain why you're such a woman.

That's what Northstar is for. It doesn't explain Cyclops.

But Northstar's whole gimmick and superpower is being gay.

Cyclops is a laser-shootin' fairy.
