View Full Version : Sonnen wants Bisping
In an e-mail to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, Chael Sonnen made his plans clear for his comeback fight -

Re: Spitsbing & his tainted victory
Joe:
If you get a chance to talk with him, please mention to your idiot-in-residence Michael Spitsbing it’ll be a little tougher to knee ME in the head when I’m charging at him like a runaway train and mincing him through the fence like a boiled potato, should we ever have the pleasure of each other’s company for a few (VERY few) moments in the Octagon.
Oh; and I’d suggest to him being a little careful about spitting on any of MY cornermen, since any one of them can beat him up as badly as I can. Thanks ever so much. Hope all is well.
-Chael Sonnen
Trash talk would be lulz, but pretty sure Sonnen would smash him.
The heat would be amazing and I'd be pulling so hard for Bisping but yeah, pretty sure Sonnen would just lie on him for 3 rounds, Bisping's wrestling isn't gonna come close. lol @ him having the balls to call anybody out though. Already seen a bunch of American's getting jacked up about Sonnen potentially smashing him elsewhere online, they'll cry about Bisping trash talking and winding people up but failing drugs tests, cheating and money laundering are a-ok :y: Almost hope it does happen though, you know Bisping would be right up for it.

Sonnen dosn't really derserve Bisping, Bisping is a win away from a title shot, and Sonnen recently got caught cheating. I think he should work his way back up, and prove himself, before getting a fight with a title contender.

Basically that. Failing a drug test should send you back to the bottom of your division.

plus bisping doesnt have what it takes to crack the top dogs in his weight class. Hes beaten dan miller, akiyama and rivera. Bisping is only a fight away from a title shot IF he can beat a top fighter like sonnen, marquart, okami, wanderlei, maia etc....
Bisping is the best of the lower level fighters. Sonnen beating him doesnt really advance him much.

It's really the only reason to make that fight. Bisping will probably end up fighting Wanderlei or Belfort.

Dana won't punish him like that, he needs Bisping to to help sell PPVs in the UK. Hardy got a title shot after beating a few nobodies. Dana still has alot invested in the UK market.

I don't think Sonnen deserves the fight after the cheating thing; that being said I do think he'd absolutely wreck Bisping.

why doesnt he deserve the fight? Its not like a win over bisping would propel his career back to title contention. Him fighting bisping is really a lose-lose fight for him in terms of advancement. If he actually loses, its horrendous for him but if he wins it really does nothing for him. The only people that win are us watching the prefight talk and bispings mental breakdown after the fight.

What? Sonnen lost his last fight on top of being caught cheating and pretty serious legal problems, I'd say he's lucky to still have a job let alone having to work his way back up a bit. I like a good heel, a trash talker, somebody that hypes fights etc but Sonnen is pretty much a piece of shit, his actions away from the octagon tell you that. Somebody on Bisping's current level is probably the exact kind of guy he should be fighting. Bisping beats him, he gets a shot. Sonnen wins, he fights somebody else on his supposed level like Okami, Marquardt etc for a future shot, especially if Silva does wind up fighting GSP. Only negative is if he loses. You Yanks get so butt hurt and wound up by Bisping that beating him can only do his rep/character the world of good. I think Sonnen knows this also, hence him calling Bisping out and making ridiculous comments every 5 minutes.

Im not denying sonnen being a giant pile of shit. Im responding to people saying he doesnt deserve a crack at bisping like hes some top tier fighter in line for the next shot. Bisping will never be a top guy unless he changes A LOT of things. so again what didnt you understand?
Him fighting bisping is really a lose-lose fight for him in terms of advancement.
This. If he beats Bisping, it could potentially do more good for him than fighting just about anybody on earth. My reply was a pretty long version of that sentence.

look at it from a matchmakers point of view... it still does nothing in terms of advancement. Sonnen wants another crack at silva. A win over bisping doesnt put him there. He would still have to fight one or two times against better guys to get back where he wants to be.
So outside of entertainment, bisping is a limbo fight for him... if he wins.

If bisping were as elite as he THINKS he is, he should want this fight. A win for him here helps him more than anyone. He not only beats a heavy favorite, but also someone who the american public pretty much hates. We're talking immediate title shot if he pulls it off.
However, I think bisping is pretty weak in the head given his display in the octagon with rivera and even against hammil. I think he will go insane if sonnen starts to lay into him, and wouldnt be surprised if he does something along the lines of paul daley if he loses.

Surely money would be a big factor from a matchmakers point of view with the hype they'd create. I'd be looking to give Sonnen the hardest road back possible with Bisping just being the 'first obstacle' but despite his perceived weakness, the Americans will still pay to see somebody beat him. And it will do wonders for Sonnen's character. And Bisping needs a 'top tier' opponent before getting near a title shot which despite Sonnen being a cunt, he obviously is. I just see it as win-win for everybody, they both stand to shit out from losing but I'm sure they're both prepared to take the risk.

well thats the thing... if bisping loses but its a decision and he doesnt freak out, it doesnt set him back any further than it is.
The fight being bad for bisping depends on his actions once the fight is over... if sonnen loses he might as well quit.
So immediately sonnen has way more to lose than bisping
And so he should. He's lucky to still be given a chance to fight. If he hadn't just given Anderson Silva the fright of his life/wasn't 'a name', I'm guessing there's a decent chance they'd cut him depending on how his legal troubles go.

All of this Sonnen cheat talk. So are we ignoring that Bisping intentionally kneed a downed opponent last fight? Is that not cheating as well? Not to mention that he spit on the corner man after the fight as well.
There's a bit of a difference between doing something stupid when you're 'fighting for your life' (and the spitting aside which is just sinking to their level, if what the Wolfslair statement said was true about Rivera and his camp which I don't see why they'd lie considering Bisping has always mugged people off before fights and then been professional afterwards, I don't blame Bisping for treating them like utter cunts) and purposefully and knowingly taking illegal performance enhancing drugs for god knows how long in a bid to gain an unfair advantage over the competition.

You're right. There is a difference. The difference is that Bisping could've killed Rivera with a knee like that.
I'm not saying he should have done it (although I think 'could've killed Rivera' is a bit strong since kneeing a downed opponents head is legal in plenty of places, I doubt the effects are much worse than a perfectly placed punch) I'm saying I can see how somebody could make that mistake. Bisping could have lost the fight for it and deservingly so, he couldn't and shouldn't have had any complaints had that happened and Rivera deserves credit for continuing. Your first comment seemed to be character driven. Bisping winds people up for fights (and as the Rivera fight showed, may be susceptible to the same thing) Chael Sonnen is a straight up A+ piece of shit no matter what angle you're looking at it from.

I agree with Inno on Bisping.. Used to like him when he competed on TUF and when he first came out, but when he was coaching TUF he became a huge prick.. Hendo taking his head off was in my top 3 mma mark out moments of all time..
That's exactly the same, buying into everything he's saying and even more so in this case because Henderson is 'your boy'. Of course people can like and dislike who they want but that season of TUF (like most others) was one big hype job for the fight. Only interview I've seen since with Bisping about the Henderson fight, he had nothing but nice things to say.

First of all, didn't sonnen get cleared by the board? The suspension got reduced, and he made a farce out of that hearing with his inept nuts.
Secondly, If Sonnen is worrying about a fight, shouldn't we assume he has found a way to wiggle off this hook? Sonnen is a politician and a salesman: Pretty much one of the scummiest fuckers on earth. If anyone can beat the charge it's Chael.

I WILL KILL YOU!!!!!!
Imagine the world-class trash talk that would be generated if Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen got together. Are you smiling at the possibility? Well, it could very well happen. It's the fight that Sonnen wants, and now, it's apparently the bout that Bisping wants as well.
In a Monday appearance on The MMA Hour, Bisping voiced a hope that he will next be matched up with the former No. 1 contender.
"I want to fight Chael Sonnen because No. 1, he's an amazing fighter," Bisping said. "When he fought last, he looked fantastic, and I want to challenge myself. He's the No. 2 ranked middleweight in the world. Obviously I can't fight No. 1 because he's got a title shot, so I want to fight the No. 2 guy."
Bisping said that his management team has informed the UFC of his desire, and he hopes that when Sonnen's contract is unfrozen following his sentencing in a criminal money laundering case, he gets the call.
In his last fight, Bisping faced and defeated Jorge Rivera. Both the pre-fight chatter and fight itself were filled with controversy, with Rivera's team producing a series of pointed videos aimed at him. The Brit earned his revenge by winning in a second-round TKO, but an illegal knee and an ugly post-fight spitting incident marred the victory celebration. Afterward, Bisping was penalized by UFC president Dana White, who refused him a post-fight bonus.
Though Sonnen is likely to turn up the insults well past anything Rivera did, Bisping said he has no issue with facing another fight that could turn personal.
"The things that Chael Sonnen comes out with, they're so outlandish that you can't help but laugh," he said. "Listen, I think he's brilliant. I've watched the stuff from his last fight. I was in stitches. I was laughing my ass off. Even comments he said about me after my last fight, I just had to laugh at that. You can't not laugh. Of course he's going to get in my head at the time, but hopefully I've learned from recent experiences. It'll make for a great fight i'm sure."
One fight he's not so interested in? Nate Marquardt.
The usually quiet middleweight contender ripped Bisping before his UFC 128 win over Dan Miller, calling him, "an ass" and "a total punk," and saying he'd like to "punch him in the mouth and shut him up."
While all that is fairly tame by MMA trash-talk standards, Bisping took exception at the comments, noting that that Marquardt has had his own issues, both in and out of the cage.
"That guy, he's quite a hypocrite," he said. "He's a steroid cheat, let's not forget that. He's had points taken away for illegally kneeing people himself, and then he goes out talking about me as if I'm Satan or something. The guy's an absolute hypocrite."
Marquardt tested positive for nandrolone following his UFC debut in August 2006. He later tested clean in a re-test, and his suspension was reduced by one month.
Bisping shot back further when asked if he felt he had bypassed Marquardt in the division.
"Yeah, to be honest," he said. "He s---- the bed every time he's in a main event. He's had three No. 1 contender fights and a title shot and lost them all. I want to fight the top guys and I think Chael Sonnen for me is the biggest possible name I could get, and that's what I'm hoping for. Nate Marquardt doesn't excite me."
Addressing the UFC 128 controversy for the first time, Bisping said he was "disappointed by the whole thing," and insisted that a second-round illegal knee was unintentional, noting how much he had invested in the fight, including two months of training away from his family, a rise up the rankings, and a possible win bonus.
"I made a mistake," he said. "It happens all the time."
As for his post-fight antics, Bisping denied spitting on anyone in Rivera's cornerman. He said that after the fight, Rivera's corner -- who he was still mad at for participating in videos that he believed to be slanderous towards his fiancee -- was still "shouting abuse" at him, so he moved towards them and spit in their direction.
Though he says he didn't hit anyone, he still regrets the action.
"Absolutely, in hindsight, I wish I handled it completely different," he said. "I let myself down, I let the UFC down, I let the fans down. I would like to apologize again for that. Of course, I regret that massively. Words can't describe how much I regret doing that. I let myself get dragged into it, and I should've been bigger than that."
"Look, 99.9 percent of the time I'm a good guy," he continued. "I treat the people closest to me with respect, I'm a loving father and husband. As I said, 99.9 percent of the time, I'm a good guy, but now and again, my guard falls down. When you're in a battle fighting, the adrenaline is flowing like crazy. Some people are different. But like I said, I apologize, and I mean it."

Not gonna happen..
Sorry gang, but it looks like those rumors about Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping landing coaching spots for TUF 14 were too good to be true. Though the pairing would make for brilliant/insane reality television, Sonnen’s laundry list of personal problems will likely prohibit his participation. From a new MMAJunkie report:
UFC president Dana White today told MMAjunkie.com no decisions have been made about the head-coaching slots for the show, which debuts in September on Spike TV.
But White also said [Chael] Sonnen “has a ton of problems” to deal with, which makes a rumored “TUF 14″ coaching slot against Michael Bisping unlikely…
[D]ue to his failed drug test at UFC 117 (due to elevated testosterone levels), Sonnen recently concluded a six-month suspension he received from the California State Athletic Commission. However, he still has a sentencing date after pleading guilty to a federal money-laundering charge as part of a 2006 real-estate deal. (At Friday’s upcoming sentencing hearing, he’s expected to receive two years of probation, a $10,000 fine and the revocation of his real-estate license.)
Sonnen also would need to deal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and get re-licensed before he could coach on “TUF”…
UFC officials ultimately “froze” Sonnen’s contract in the wake of the real-estate charges, and the fighter has turned down most interview requests since news broke.
White admits the NSAC issue could be a problem for any coaching plans. He confirmed he recently met with Kizer to discuss Sonnen’s situation but didn’t divulge details of the outcome.
As of now, though, White said no decisions have been made about the coaching slots.
“We have no clue who will coach; Chael has a ton of problems (right now),” White said.
Sonnen has to be re-licensed by the NSAC before he can appear on TUF? Interesting. Meanwhile, that crazy-ass Jose Canseco can wreak havoc on any reality-show set he wants. Doesn’t seem fair…
They should do a Strikeforce v UFC TUF for the lulz.
Next Big Thing
04-05-2011, 12:34 PM
The next time they do a tough enough for the heavyweights (which should be soon considering by this time next year the contenders like JDS, Nelson, Schaub and Struve would have either had shots or been exposed) it would be a waste to not have Overeem come in and coach against the current champion if he continues to win.

I realize his suspension prohibits Sonnen from competing, but I don't understand how it would affect his ability to coach and appear on a reality television show.

I do believe that "cornermen" have to also be licensed by the commission. That was an issue with Nick Diaz following the Strikeforce brawl and Roger Mayweather lost his license for a year after the Zab Judah brawl.
Maybe the TUF coaches have to be licensed as cornermen as well. It would make sense considering the fights are sanctioned by NSAC now and if Chael is suspended is a fighter maybe that carries over.
