Don't think we've done this before. Who are your favourite Play by Play announcers? I grew up listening to Bob Cole do play by play on ockey Night in Canada and have always loved him. Kinda sucks that they spilt Cole and Harry Neale
My all time favourite PBP guy is Rick Jeanneret who calls PBP for the Buffalo Sabres. I try to catch Sabre games when I can just so I can hear him. He's such a homer, but he's so friggen awesome and he gets so excited during fights. When my Leafs play Buffalo I watch the Buffalo feed.

I LOVE Chip Caray. He does play by play with a certain "something" that I enjoy. Gets you excited about what's happening in the game.

I hate Chip Caray. Mostly cause he is a Braves homer. Also, that guy does not get a base hit.

NFL: Al Michaels closely followed by Jim Nantz.
Rugby: Miles Harrison for hilarity. For quality, Eddie Butler.
Football: John Motson; so many classic moments.

Few are more knowledgeable and have more integrity than John Motson or the sadly-retired Barry Davies, from before the modern era of requiring an "expert summariser".
For nostalgic reasons though I like Alan Parry, he commentated some of Leicester's finest hours.

Padres brought in Dick Enberg last year, and I must say, he brings a high level of class and esteem to the broadcast. Also respect how he will get excited for a play regardless of what team makes it. I love Enberg.
Before Vasgersian showed up, the Padres had Mel Proctor. He was pretty good from what I remember. He'd be slightly bias, but overall, loved his approach.
I enjoy Joe Buck during the playoffs. He brings a certain level of importance to the broadcast, and still shines despite being saddled with a less than stellar Tim McCarver.
I also enjoy Bob Costas. Like, Buck, he broadcasts with importance, and even during some reg season games last year on MLB Network, he called the game with a sense of urgency. To me, that helps get the game over.
And despite hating the Gianst, John Miller is pretty damn good.
Oh, and of course, Vin FUCKING Scully has, and always will be the man.

I HATE HATE HATE Hawk Harrelson. He is the absolute worst play by play man in the business. With that said....
It's not Hawk's job to sit there and go on a diatribe about what he thinks should happen to Joe West. He's calling a game, not participating in a discussion forum. It is his job, however, to call what is going on. I don't need his bias, one sided, homer opinion on what's going on.
He is exactly what I don't want to be in a play by play announcer, if I ever get that far.

What do you want him say when that happens?
It's not just what he says, it's HOW he says it. It's really boring the way he says it. Also it would be nice if he said what type of pitch it was, but that would denote that he knew that. He's a football-first guy and it's pretty obvious.
John Miller on Sunday Night Baseball has always been a personal favorite of mine. It's a shame to see him go, but at least he doesn't have to work with idiots like Joe Morgan and Steve Philips anymore.
Also, gotta love Don Orsillo and the Rem Dawg.

I'll agree to disagree, as I personally love Buck's style. I don't think he's a "football first" guy. Yes, he does football, during football season, but I think he is just as effective calling a baseball game.
And  at you neg repping me for hating the Marlins broadcast team. I know broadcasts teams are supposed to favor the home team, but these guys, like the Hawk, take it way to far. They bitch and moan and complain when things aren't going their way or calls don't go in favor of them, and they root and cheer from the booth.
I hate that shit. Look, I get it. You work for the team, and you are, by nature, going to root for said team. But they are obnoxious about it. Vin Scully is arguably the greatest play by play man of all time. Listen to his broadcast and tell me what team he's rooting for.
Same thing with Dick Enberg. When the Padres would come through in jey situations, he'd get excited, but at the same time, when the other team made a play or got a big hit, he would call it objectively and leave his "homerness" out of it, which is how it should be done.
Also...here's a homer for you...

Having grown up listening to Bob Cole, he is the voice of hockey for me. :y:
TSN (unless it's Cuthbert) or American hockey broadcasts are almost unwatchable for me, lol, HNIC's broadcast teams are where it's at.
I did like Chris Cuthbert's play-by-play with Greg Millen on colour commentary during the west coast HNIC games before Cuthbert's departure to TSN.
I like Kevin Weekes on colour commentary as well.

No, I went for a quarter but it wasn't for me.
I've worked in tv and radio for almost 13 years now(which isnt bad considering im 28 lol), and thru a good friend of mine in the radio business have been calling football games for....well this season will be my 3rd year(color the first year and pbp after that), and started calling wrestling about 6 months ago....hoping to get a basketball job here soon too, it's just one of those things man if you apply yourself and get a break or two that you don't NEED to go to school because you either can do it or you can't, in my opinion no amount of schooling can help with that.

I love you Gerts. Rick is the Shit.
I love ever minute of listening to him call games.
the thought that he might retire this year, or next, makes me sad. He has been calling the games my whole life. I cant imagine watching games with someone else calling them.

When Robson retired Jim Houghston, your current voice of Hockey Night In Canada took over.
Now the voice of the Canucks in John Shorthouse and he's also pretty damn awesome. Must be some sort of broadcasting water out here.

On the flip side, I have to agree with the Joe Buck hate. Dude is too monotone, knows not much about the game of baseball, even less about football, and is only where he is because of his father. The last part can also be said about Chip Caray.

This. And Chick Hern.
Chick Hearn here...came up with a bunch of the phrases that we take for granted today. Plus, while he was the Lakers play-by-play man, he wasn't such a homer like other team's play-by-play guys and would regularly rip into the home team we warranted.
