Which do you think was the better announce team, The Brain and Gorilla Monsoon or JR and the King?

Heenan and Monsoon. Monsoon just added something to matches that made it all seem more real. Heenan also kept him on his toes with the insults. Two color commentators usually don't work, but with them it was magic.

It's a hard question because for each teams time, they were the better team. Gorilla and Heenan wouldn't work in the attitude era, and vice versa. Overall I prefer King and JR because they had more guts, more intense storylines, and overall could sell a big moment or story with more passion. Plus Heenan always put people over or put a move or moment that didn't deserve it, his kayfabe was very fake to me, same with Gorilla.
Gorilla and Heenan were great for a child though, very animated and cartoon like.

Yeah cause the storylines were written by JR and the King...

For the reason Jordan X stated.

The Brain and the Gorilla. Easy choice for me. Then again, I'm in the minority since I don't even like JR, and I'm eh on the King.

Brain and Monsoon. Heck, Ventura and Monsoon were better than JR and King.

easily Monsoon and Heenan, never have two commentators been more suited for each other

That's a fucking horrible reason to pick one over the other. Just because I haven't seen them they must not be good or I would have seen them. :|

Really? If I wasn't able to be a fan when Gorilla and Brain were together, I can't judge whether they were good or not. So I go with King and JR, who I DID experience.

That's retarded. You are saying that nothing existed before you started watching. I'm not saying that Heenan and Monsoon were better than Gordon Solie just because I didn't see him growing up.
Go listen to We didn't start the fire as a punishment of your ignorance. Also, in the age of the internet where almost everything is available to watch it is even more baffling to hear such a stupid ass excuse.
If you don't know what the other announce team did there is a third vote option or abstaining from voting. An ignorant vote does very little for the discussion.

No, I'm not saying NOTHING existed before I started watching...what I AM saying is that based on what I have been able to watch, that's what I base my vote on.
It's like if someone puts up a poll of "Better Wrestler: Bret Hart or Bruno Sammartino?" I'm going to vote for Bret, 'cause it's asking MY opinion, and based on the fact that I HAVE seen Bret, but not Bruno, I'm going to vote for Bret...
...and it's not a knock on Bruno...it's just I never saw him, so based on MY opinion, I go with the wrestler I WAS able to see.
It's not rocket science, people.

This is obviously a discussion about informed opinion over uninformed opinion so yes, it's very simple. Pretty good debate though. Nice thread so far. :y:

As much as I love JR, Heenan and Monsoon take this one for me by a mile. Just watch that clip above. They were incredible. And Heenan was way too great at comedy to be a pro wrestling commentator. Genius.

They were both great teams teams. I think I like J.R. better then Monsoon, but I like The Brain better then Lawler. So I can't vote in this poll.

Monsoon and Heenan as I found them to be the less irritating duo as far as their actual voices go otherwise it's a very close call.

I will say Gorilla and Brain because they put effort into every match and could put over the undercard better than King and JR.

Heenan and Monsoon.
Heenan was better than King as a heel commentator and meshed better as a team. Heenan was also pretty good regardless of his partner which is something King lacks in post-JR years.
JR was as good as Moonson as the play-by-play and selling a match/feud. Him connecting with Stone Cold was a bit better than Moonson connecting with Hogan.
Both were also good for their era in the WWF/WWE but the later years of King/JR was much worse than Heenan/Moonson. To be fair, Heenan/Moonson didn't last as long as a team and lacked the staleness of JR/King from being together for a bit too long.

King was really only great because he was a fantastic asshole. But Heenan (and Ventura and Heyman and JBL) could do that too. What's always dragged Lawler down for me is that color guys are supposed to give some sort of insight. Lawler rarely did that. That's what made those other four guys great color commentators.

I never got the opportunity to watch during the Heenan/Monsoon days but from what I've heard from watching old matches, it's very classic 'straight man vs. zany guy' and fairly entertaining. Heenan lost a lot of points with me with his insistance on making jokes during a certain match and J.R.'s brush with senility in his later years kind of puts the two teams neck and neck with me.

I really can't say. I agree with the notion that they were both right for their respective time frames. I'd love to see Brain and King heel only commentary though.

There is no way to choose, they're both amazing in their own ways. Heenan is hilarious and Monsoon had a golden voice; King is such a fantastic heel and JR gives any match that "Big Match" feel.

I didn't even need to watch the entire rumble to make my decision that hennan and monsoon are better as a team. Now to go watch the rest of the rumble
