View Full Version : What would you change about a wrestler you don't like? (Gertner bonus)

It could be anything and I don't mean like "godlike" changes. I mean, you become their boss and change their direction.

For instance, I would take current day Hulk Hogan and turn him into an ultra-parody of himself. Turn him into a comedy character who just appears from time to time and says nothing outside of his catch-phrases.

Batista's heel turn against Cena was one of those changes that I felt made him so much better, mainly because, I never understood Batista as a face in the first place. Batista as an asshole always made more sense.

Gertner, I would like you to try and make Daniel Bryan into someone you would like. Formal request. Yay or nay?

I would become Hogans manager and slowly sabotage his career, forcing him to retire and leave the wrestling industry forever!!!

He is already in TNA.

If I was going to change anyone it'd be Daniel Bryan, who still isn't properly over despite a US title reign.

I'd kick the "nerd" thing up a gear. Give the guy dork clothes; make him nervous around women, easily intimidated and shown hanging out backstage on his ipad or trying to organise D&D games with other wrestlers - all the usual cliche stuff.

But... he's not instantly transformed into a bad-ass as soon as he steps in the ring. Instead it takes around a minute or so of a beat-down, he snaps and then tortures the fuck out his opponent.

Oh god, and then he genuinely apologises to the guy after the match before running off to the back ashamed that he lost his temper. Yeah, that'd be hilarious enough to get him over.

I'd make Christian 6'4'', 260 so he would get the respect he deserves.....

Daniel Bryan. Grow a personality and about 5 inches in height.

Ugh, I almost didn't want to participate because people will bitch about me trolling the boards. It's not trolling when I'm being serious. He's not over and to 95% of the fans, he's boring as fuck. There's a reason why he got squashed last week, got cut from Wrestlemania, and comes out to crickets. Nobody cares about a guy who looks like their English teacher and can't cut a promo. Cutting a promo doesn't mean yelling "grr, I'm intense, and I want respect and this business means everything to me", because that's EVERY INDY PROMO. I laugh on other boards when people say "they should have Bryan and Regal wrestle for 30 minutes. That'd be awesome!" Awesome to who? They wrestled on Raw for 5 minutes and the crowd couldn't have cared less. Anyways, rant over.

Daniel Bryan did add +2 to charisma by wearing a spiffy ring jacket thing on Monday, though.

I like it. He could even use a posse of nerds behind him.

I agree. I'd make him taller. Though I think you are downplaying the cheers that he gets to suit your interest in burying him. Him being pulled from Mania sucked. Sheamus and Bryan would have had a solid opening match to get the crowd into it without having to waste a World title match as an open.

Gertner, I understand all that and though I disagree to some extent (though I believe he is far from over), I just want you to tell me what you would have him do. The "English teacher" thing, would you have him leave for 6-8 months for a 300 Style training routine where he comes back looking like a mini-Steiner? His promos bore you, but does everything about his matches bore you? What would you change?

Gertner

He's a good wrestler, but I don't care about wrestlers who put on good matches. I've always stated that I don't watch wrestling to see good matches.

Take Santino for example. His matches aren't always great, but I'm entertained but his antics and personality. Personality means more to me than good mat skills.

DANIEL BRYAN
I'd just overhaul him completely. First and foremost, I'd bring back his "Rage" theme he had when he redebuted at Summer Slam. I don't think fans take his current theme seriously.

The geek gimmick would be scrapped, and I'd start taking his character in a more serious direction. Have him dump Gail Kim publically, stating he has fallen off a bit since their relationship went public, and that he is here to win, not make nice with the ladies.

I'd then start having the broadcast team make note week after week how Bryan seems more focused and determined, and start structuring his matches to become more and more aggressive, focusing on different body parts, ignoring the refs to break a hold, and using submissions other than the LaBell Lock to finish the job. basically, try and replicate his ROH character. Nobody thought WWE would let Punk recreate his indy persona, and since they let him run with it as a heel, he's been amazing. Allowing Bryan to work with what got him over initially is playing to his strengths and is worth a shot.

If he had to cut a promo, I'd make sure to bullet point what the theme of the promo is, and bullet point the ideas he needs to get acrossed in a serious manner.

To cut this short, I'd turn him into Chris Benoit 2.0. It could work for him. If he's booked and presented to the fan base as a dangerous submission machine who doesn't need size to win, he could very much get over in a better capacity than he is now.

Benoit looked menacing. Bryan looks like I could stuff him in a locker.

Bryan doesn't have the physical build of Benoit. This gimmick work if you put next to the Big Show, Triple H, Kane or the Undertaker.

Because he's not 6 foot or 200 pound plus they need to work with what he's got, and that's technical ability and a nerdy charm.

I don't find him particularly charming as a nerd. He was more interesting as a guy who came to NXT and was billed as rook even though he had more experience and could probably compete with half the roster.

Try and do that, though.

That's the charm of Daniel Bryan. He's got such a harmless look, but is such a ruthless bad-ass. I do think some things need to change about Bryan, though. I get what they are going for with "Ride of the Valkyries," but there are other options of "this guy is a bit of a power-geek" without using classical music. "The Final Countdown" would be absolutely perfect for him, even in the WWE -- but I'm not sure how much money that would cost.

I personally like this guy, but something needs to change about Tyler Reks. His shtick last year was pretty interesting -- intense guy who shows up and demands to be given more opportunities. But it's gone nowhere. Reks is the perfect candidate for a mouthpiece/manager -- someone that sees the talent in him and wants to take him to the top.

What Daniel Bryan needs?

... "til 5".

On topic: never been a fan of Chris Masters, gassed physique or no. What would I do to improve him? "Future Endeavor"!

I kid! Only slightly. Wasn't in the spirit of the question, though, so let me start again. :ahem:

I would give him something meaningful to do. It's not like he's someone like a Jeff Hardy who has that intangible gravitas that makes him popular for no reason. He's bland and generic, and even more so as a face. Put him in an angle... doesn't even have to be a TITLE angle. Just give him something to do other than kill time on Superstars or occasionally jiggle his tits to music in a random comedy skit. If you're going to continue to keep him as a face, he needs to make a save on someone people give somewhat of a shit about. Pair them as a tag-team, and fatten that division up a bit. Hell, even give him the "Lex Luger" treatment. Not saying ride around in a tour bus or be Heavyweight champ, I just mean have him come in and do something BIG like when Lex came in the chopper and slammed Yoko. Have him come down and take on a rampaging Zeke who just kicked about 3 asses of smaller statured faces. Anything, just give him something to do that somehow matters!
