View Full Version : "What was I thinking" mark-outs

I was thinking about Cena's kiddie marks and feeling a bit hypocritical today.

Usually, as a kid, you're 100% mark. You don't know wrestling is fake, and even if you do, there are guys you found awesome that you would never get behind as an adult, or at least once you had an understanding of what to look for in a good wrestler.

Who are some of these guys that had awesome appeal to you as a kid, but that you would be completely bored with today? Or alternatively, if you've "been around" for a while, who are some of the wrestlers you've seen that were popular with kids/super marks and shook your head at?

And we may as well throw in wrestlers that you generally used to love, but think is a complete tool now, whether or not they fell off, or you just realized how stupid they were.

Here's my kiddie mark-magnet:

I was marking all over the place for The Ultimate Warrior, all the more so because my cousin was marking out for Hulk Hogan at the time.

I guess I've always been a mark for Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Diesel, Razor, Bret, Triple H, Mankind, and Steve Austin.

SO I guess I had great taste.

No Kidding though I was a mark for WWF's Gang Warz in the summer and fall of 1997. I really enjoyed DOA and thought they beat the shit (literally) out of everyone.

Goldberg was my childhood Mark.

I also marked out when I saw four horsemen roll out and all the factions in WCW.

Oh man now you are talking well basically I liked any monster heel such as...

<iframe title="YouTube video player" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ECofrp--ZLY" allowfullscreen="" width="480" frameborder="0" height="390"></iframe>

I used to go absolutely nuts for heel demolition. For me hands down the best tag team of all time and I know that's controversial but they were way ahead of their time and they entertained me like no other tag team ever has. Of course I marked out for the Legion of Doom but who didn't right? Another great tag team! The heel thing though always.. I had GOOSE BUMPS for Demolition they were awesome.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4aS1Xfb6ckE" allowfullscreen="" width="480" frameborder="0" height="390"></iframe>

Strangely though although I loved heels my favourite bar none was The Ultimate Warrior because to me back then he was the future. I followed him since his first match and obviously watched him grow into a man. I knew one day he would take the title from Hogan and I knew he had superstar written all over him. When he beat Hogan for the title I marked out like crazy, my best friends.. all Hogan fans. It was either the Warrior or Hogan back then. Of course Warrior has his knockers in terms of how well he performed or how much he drew but you tell me who has received better pops than that guy did in his prime because I have never heard anything like that since. He had the physique, he had the presence, he had the look and the music.. man it had me PUMPED!

Wrestlemania 6 hands down the most memorable Wrestlemania for me the passing of the torch from yesterdays hero to todays. Back then this was a HUGE deal.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fnSGA7u0qN0" allowfullscreen="" width="480" frameborder="0" height="390"></iframe>

Of course I respected and enjoyed HBK, Rick Rude, Mr Perfect, Macho Man, Razor Ramon, Owen Hart, HHH, Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, Bret Hart to name but a few. Even back then so I guess I had bad taste and good taste! Still I was and still am passionate about the business and even now it still has me on the edge of my seat at times.. nothing like it.

I'd always markout hard for Glacier, Wrath, Alex Wright, Disco Inferno, La Parka, Stone Cold, and The Rock. I didn't begin marking out for Ultimate Warrior until extremely recently, and I'm 24 years old.

Huge Warrior Mark....I remember when I was a kid.... I tied shoe laces around my arms to make my "biceps" pop. I use to run through the house at full speed....until one day I tied the strings a little too tight...and passed the fuck out ran smack into the record player and broke the shelf door....out cold.

Huge Hogan mark, received many ass beatings for ripping my shirt in two, before my matches.

Legion of Doom and Road Warriors Mark........nuff said.

Sting mark.

Demolition mark.

For some strange reason...a huge mark for Million Dollar Man.....and............................................Doink the Clown. So fucking what.

Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, Road Warriors. Why? Minnesota Baby! God I was lucky enough as a kid to have a dad who was into wrestling as much as I was, and he always took me to the AWA matches, I asked him to find some of the old old pics he took so I can get them up here, but so far he hasn't found em.

Was a huge mark, and still am, for Bret Hart, Ken Shamrock (used to do the angry box your head thing he did before stepping in to the ring), D'Lo Brown ("You Better Recognize..."), Norman Smiley, Raven, The Road Warriors, Owen Hart and Rob Van Dam.

Was a huge mark, until i grew up, for Goldberg, Wildman Marc Mero, Sable, Ahmed Johnson, New Age Outlaws and Sting.

You lucky SOB:mad: My parents hate wrestling. They chastise me for watching it to this day.

Anywho...always marked for Mr. Perfect. He was the very first heel I actually liked. I was BEGGING for a Perfect/Luger fued after Mania X.

Also, heel or face, I loved Bret in WWE. Didn't see much of WCW when he went over. But when he was the top guy in WWE, I always marked hard.

Oh, and the Rock.

The Buschwackers.

Until the epic set of feuds involving the Hardys, Dudleys, and E&C, the Buschwackers were my favorite tag team while growing up watching WWF wrestling all the way to most of the Attitude Era.

Biggest disappointment would have been Glacier because I thought his character and pre-debut videos were the coolest thing the WCW had done at the time. Looking back at his career, he barely did anything after the Mortis/Wrath feuds and wasn't worth getting excited at all.

You guys are up my alley with Crush, Tatanka, Adam Bomb. Fuck yeah, anyone remember the Beverly Brothers?

XL
04-15-2011, 09:03 AM
Tatanka was a big one for me too. Looking at his stuff now he really wasn't anything to shout about but when I was kid, man, he was the best! Marked when he returned in the Rumble a few years back.

I remember being a mark for Adam Bomb despite not seeing him wrestle. I used to collect the WWF Magazine and I was sold on his look alone.

Don't remember being a massive mark for Hogan/Warrior but I'm sure I liked them enough.

Bret was my go-to-guy as a kid.

I guess the Oddities would fall into this category, but I still love them now. Plus they had Earthquake and Luna, so it's not that far out there.

I used to love the Truth Commission.

I loved Hollywood Hogan and even 80s Hogan (from tapes), but that's not really a bad thing. I don't find this hypocritical, because it's just something you tend to like when you're younger and tastes change. I can tell you for a fact that if I got into wrestling around the same age I did and Cena was at the top in this character, I would have loved him.

as a kid it was savage right away. he is what got me hooked on wrestling and evryone else really i didnt care about.

warrior i liked when he came out and loved when he beat hogan cause i couldnt stand him. needless to say watching warrior savage at wm7 i bit off all mynails not knowing who to root for

later as a teen i loved all of what austin did and always was into ddp and savage in wcw. always just rooted for whoever was against hogan.

these days its hard to ever have a mark moment between the feel just isnt the same when you're older, lack of talent, and knowing whats coming from either intuition or the internet.

I remember marking out to Ted Dibiase Sr's theme song... mainly due to his laugh. Everything else I marked out to has already been mentioned.

Sadly the last time I marked out was when there was an actual wrestling match which was i think shortly before the "PG" era... Don't remember who was in that match though >:

Tatanka was the man when I was a kid. I was FURIOUS that he dropped the undefeated streak to Ludvig Borga. Looking back, that was a huge waste, considering where both went afterwards.

Forgot about Shamrock, but I was huge mark for him. I got to meet him several times as a kid, and because of that, was always rooting for him.

Virgil. Not so much the man himself, but the way his turn on DiBiase was handled so perfectly. You watch the Royal Rumble where he turns and nails DiBiase with the Million Dollar Belt, the crowd absolutely pissed their pants for it.

Of course when they cut him loose from DiBiase and tried to let him fly on his own, he kind of did a nose-dive. I'm not totally ashamed to say how hard I was into that angle though.

I think you guys are missing the point here.

Nobody sould be embarressed for marking for Raven/Bam Bam/Rock/MDM. You seem to think this thread is about who you liked as a kid. It's not. It's about those guys that you loved that you look back now and think "What did I ever see in him? He was awful!".

I didn't 'mark out' or anything, but Mikey Whipwreck had some pretty awesome matches in WCW. His debut match against Billy Kidman at Uncensored '99 was a great match. Sadly, that match is forgotten. Why? Because it's Kidman vs. Whipwreck.
