I was surprised when i started reading this forum that a majority of people dug vince on commentary as I always preferred anyone else doing the call over him. Always found him cartoonish and that he never brought any realism to a match/feud/event. that being said...
With the rise of WWF taking control back from WCW in the 90's do any of you attribute a part of that being that vince finally stepped away form the mic? that him getting out of the way and letting JR take the play by play not only made WWf seem more legitimate in the battle but also helped build their guys in a way vince could not?
In all the rise and falls, monday night wars that have been discussed this topic has never been adressed just curious what you guys think
Loved Vince, him and Jesse doing the RAW main a year or so back was immense. Probably more of a nostalgia thing though since the 80's/early 90's is my favourite period. And of course he was kind of cartoonish, when he was commentating, wrestling was one big live action cartoon. His high pitched calling as matches would reach their conclusion followed by a big 'YERRRSS!' when the babyface would put a guy away still makes me mark out a bit. It's almost a mini-insight into him as well, for all the mutie complaints about him/WWE, hearing him put some of the lower guys over so hard on commentary, the ones he supposedly doesn't care about according to 'the experts' is kind of fascinating to me.

Watching old clips now, I think Vince was great on commentary.

<font color=goldenrod>Vince was great on commentary. Occasionally he'd go into run-on mode which was hilarious.

Haha McMahon did that on almost every pinfall. "1....2.....he's got him....no!"
I don't think McMahon stepping away from being a commentator alone helped WWE beat WCW but it was him stepping away and feuding with Austin.

for me it felt like when vince stepped away from commentary the wwf sort of grew up in a way. more realistic personalities in the ring, better feuds and angles you see in a small time frame if you compare 95-96 to 97-98.
just don't think mankind/taker HIAC would have been the same with him on the call. his style was unique but the product came across as more real with jr there. semantics i know just was wondering

I made this thread just under a year ago and was surprised at how many people liked him (or loked him as I asked in the poll) http://www.tpww.net/forums/showthread.php?t=104895
But to answer the main point of your question...
Him stepping away from the table was one of the reasons WWE started to take off again but that was due to the Mr McMahon character and the fued with Austin. Vince's ability on commentary and JR replacing him has pretty much nothing to do with any success. You're way off base with that thought.

Loved when Vince had to put over gimmicks that he was clearly out of touch with. Like him talking about how cool Flash Funk's dancing was and how awkwardly he would yell "Take a look at this! Ha ha! Alright!"

Loved it when Vince was on commentary. Wish he would do it again.
He used to get mad at the referees never called them by name. Like everyone else
