could pull off an iron man match? whether it b3 30 pr 60 mins are there any guys on the roster who could tell a story that long and pull it off? not one comes to mind right now

I know a lot of people were "blah" on it, but I thought Cena and Orton did a nice job with their Iron Man match last year.

If given the right story and proper build, I think Swagger could pull off an Iron Man match. He's got a pretty decent sized moveset to spread out throughout the hour, and he can eat up time with his antics to the crowd. As for his opponent though, not sure lol

Bryan is almost as boring as Gertner's trolling.

Bryan v Punk in a Half Hour match of any kind would rule. But there are a fair amount of guys that could go IronMan. Swagger, Ziggler, Christian, Rhodes are all interesting enough in the ring to keep it going.

Cena
Orton
Punk
Ziggler
Bryan
Swagger
Kofi
Miz
Undertaker (would probably need about a decades warning in advance)
ADR
Evan Bourne
Morrison
Rey
Primo
Triple H
Christian
Cody
Chavo

I'm sure Barrett, Sheamus, Drew, Gabriel, Riley, Tatsu, Barretta, Kidd, Sin Cara, DiBiase, Slater, A-Ri, Hawkins, DH Smith, Mcgillicutty, Ryder, Santino could do it if needed/put in the right position on the card to do it. Not really sure what the point of the thread is.

Something must be wrong because I agree with CSL.

I think given the right amount of time to prepare, anyone could have an Iron Man match, bearing the bigger guys like Big Show, Khali, Mark Henry etc.

Orton and Cena did a good job with theirs. Sure, it wasn't a technical classic like Hart/Michaels, Angle/Lesnar or Benoit/Triple H, but they did enough storytelling and pacing to keep the flow of the match going.

A CM Punk/Daniel Bryan Iron Man match would be awesome, but probably wouldn't go over too well in the WWE.

NormanSmiley
04-27-2011, 02:20 PM
im sure with 6 months training csl could go ironman too. maybe i should have said a compelling match tho since the storytelling aspect fell on deaf ears. cena hasn't done any storytelling since his cd came out

I'm pretty sure CM Punk and John Cena would be able to do a pretty good Ironman match.

Ditto for Triple H and Punk.

Triple H and Cena.

Triple H v The Rock was the best Ironman match ever IMO, so it doesn't need two 'technical wrestlers' for it to work well.

Of course not. All it needs is a good storyline build-up to the actual match, and two guys who can tell the story in the ring.

An Ironman Match is a mainevent...hell it is almost the entire card. So you have to ask who could draw and keep the event interesting. Bret Hart and HBK set the standard. While there are tons of guys who could work that long, you have too look at the maineventers.

So my short list of guys who I think could do it are Orton, Cena, Punk, the Miz and Jericho. But the problem is Orton or Cena has to be in the match because Miz, Punk and Jericho are not important enough for such a booking.

Also, I would not suggest WWE trying to put on an Ironman match in their kiddied up slap fight federation. It would be extremely boring being that wrestling isn't allowed anymore.

John Cena vs. Randy Orton was my favorite match in their series of matches besides Summerslam 2007. Besides those two, Christian, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Swagger and maybe Dibiase could do it. It's all a matter of star power and being able to hold the audience for an hour hell maybe more if it goes sudden death. I personally like all the Iron Man Matches with my favorite being The Rock vs. Triple H-actually it's my favorite WWE Title match. I know the Undertaker coming in at the end and the melee may have ruined it for some people but I like it. I also feel Angle-Lesnar was phenomenal and I always liked Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels. One match that was great but isn't talked about because it was only a half hour was the submission match between Angle and Benoit at Backlash 2001.

Not only could Daniel Bryan do an Iron Man Match he already has gone 60 minutes or more 4 times against...

v. Colt Cabana
V. Nigel McGuinness
(the previous two were done in back to back nights)

v. Samoa Joe
v. Austin Aries (74 minutes)

And every one of those matches were very entertaining.

And for the garbage that I hear that he doesn't wrestle a style that WWE fans find "entertaining" is just foolishness. I'll admit that the guy doesn't get pops when he comes out (it doesn't help that he hasn't been in a feud for about 6-7 months and that he hasn't been on the mic for the same amount of time) but when he's in the ring people get excited by his matches.

My sister just got into wrestling and Daniel Bryan is her favorite wrestler because of his in-ring style and I've shown her some ROH DVD's and she prefers WWE style to ROH so its not a matter of liking the indy style better than the WWE. Also I've heard several of my students (between 15 and 18 years old) talk about how much they like Daniel Bryan's matches and they wonder why he doesn't get longer matches.

Sure that's a small sample size but it shows that he's not this snooze fest that some people like to perpetuate to be true.

They don't have an announce team that can be that interesting for that long at time. King, Cole, Booker, Josh for 60 minutes in a row?

Heel King and McMahon made the WrestleMania 12 match way more bearable. Somebody find the next Bobby the Brain Heenan. Too bad he only had a daugther and not a son. Way to drop the ball Brain!

When I think "pull off" an Iron Man match, I'm not looking at "go out there and fill the timre requirement," I'm thinking "Have a solid match out of it." Most anyone could do 30. These are the guys I think could go 60 and make a good match of it:

Cena
Orton
Punk
Miz
Morrison
Triple H
Christian
Barrett
Santino

Morrison I'm a little skeptical on, as his Elimination Chamber showing left him pretty low in the tank, but in an Iron Man match he wouldn't be doing a Spider-Man walk-and-drop from the top of a cage, so I think he could do it. Something about Barrett makes me believe he has it in him. At this point I think Orton, Punk, and Miz could do 2-hour matches if they had to.

And no offense to him, but I don't see Taker doing a 60-minute Iron Man match without the last ten minutes being a protracted revisitation of his WM27 match with HHH.

While I agree that so many guys could really tell a great story in an Iron Man Match, as someone said, there needs to be a story there, and the WWE is only going to dedicate such a story to a major storyline.

Personally, I think CM Punk would be a good candidate for an Iron Man Match. He can physically go the distance, people either hate him or love him (he gets pops from smart crowds), and he's allowed to breathe so much into his feuds. Who could his opponent be? Well, anybody. Daniel Bryan's style would fit the match, but he's not on RAW at the moment. Someone mentioned John Morrison, though, and I think he would be my pick. Either him or Kofi Kingston.

You might not think that either guy's style would fit the match, but I think it would be an arrival party for them. After an Iron Man Match, these two guys would be seen differently, not only by the fans, but by the WWE. If a feud between Morrison and Punk (who have great chemistry) or Kofi and Punk was allowed to get really personal, until the point where Punk perhaps put his career on the line against either man -- I guarantee an amazingly charged match.

Mr. Nerfect

Alternatively, I'd like to see Daniel Bryan and Tyson Kidd start up a feud on SmackDown!. Just have Kidd defeat Trent Barreta via submission on SmackDown! in what would be a great match. Kidd then brags that SmackDown! has got the best submission wrestler in the entire WWE. Bryan comes out and Kidd asks him what he is doing here -- "Wait, I get it. You're upset because you got drafted to SmackDown! and your girlfriend didn't." Bryan then, without saying a word, starts beating up Kidd and locks him in the LeBell Lock.

Kidd is furious the next week, and (accurately) points out that Daniel Bryan assaulted him. Michael Cole sticks up for Kidd (due to his problems in the past with Bryan, and this generates further mark interest in the feud), and Bryan comes out and chases off Kidd, and then mutilates Michael Cole at ringside. We then get Matt Striker filling in on SmackDown!, as Cole refuses to work it, as Striker can add more to these sort of longer bouts, I believe.

Kidd and Bryan then begin their feud -- perhaps with Kidd costing Bryan an IC Title match against Wade Barrett, and just those sort of shenanigans. And while a 60-Minute Iron Man Match between the two might be a bit much, I could see them getting 30 minutes for an Ultimate Submission contest down the line.

Kind of has to make sense for their gimmick and/or their style in the ring. This is one of the reasons why people keep saying Bryan vs Punk. A guy like Bryan could use it as a claim to fame. A guy like Punk can use it as an example why "Straightedge means I'm better than you". You either do that, or make it a match in a "heated" rivalry, which at this point, nobody really has (closest thing to what I mean is if Edge didn't have to go, and he and ADR were still going at it, they could've pulled one off that consisted of a lot of brawling because of their "hate"... Christian in the equation seems a bit too new to make sense just yet)

People like Morrison or Kingston* dont' make sense in this kind of match. Sure, they could do it, but they fit more in ladder matches or cages. In their current incarnation, they cater more to that moment that everyone expects Joey Styles to walk down the ramp, put on a headset, and yell "OH MY GOD!!!" for. Same for Santino and Chavo. They are both legit and can tear the gorram house down, but they're now both comedy relief characters. Wouldn't make sense.

*There seemed to be the requisite amount of angst in the Kingston/Orton feud, and Kofi could have toned down the spot-monkeying a bit to make an enjoyable match... but... you know... "STUPID!"

I agree that, with proper prep time, almost any wrestler can do a 30 or 60 min Iron Man match.

However, one of the purposes of an Iron Man, Last Man Standing, HIAC, and the like was to be the end of a feud that spans a few Pay Per Views.

Right now I don't think no one has that length of a feud outside of Cena - Miz and Orton - Punk. Heck, the LayCool thing has had a longer feud than some of the MAIN feuds. That should tell you something.

Anyone on the roster could do it with HBK.

Or even HHH

Just need one top notch ring general to lead them through and they could make a decent run of it.

I think Punk would be a good choice, as his heel antics would eat alot of clock.

Iron Man matches are soooooo boring.

this.

I would use iron man matches as a way to check out what else is going on TV (or by using PIP) and I would know nothing would usually happen until the final 10 minutes of the match.

Ironman matches do showcase and reveal a lot of talent of the two superstars, but I find them to be very boring and that just takes away from the overall match

That's what I'm saying about Morrison and Kingston, though. In their current incarnation, they seem like flippy guys who go out there, take risks and either crash and burn or pay-off; but the whole idea behind putting them into this sort of match would be to showcase a more grounded side to them, and help them arrive at that next level. Also, both Morrison and Kingston can do something new in every match they're in. I'm sure they could come up with spots right up to the end that may not be high risk, but make people think "HOLY SHIT!" It could take that "bore factor" that even the best can get bogged down with in Iron Man Matches.

Chavo Guerrero and Hornswoggle, anyone? :shifty:

Now that you mention it, that should have happened to end that "feud".

About a half an hour into Raw, Chavo and Hornswoggle start a falls count anywhere Iron Man Match. They have their typical comedic fight for about 5 minutes in the ring ending with Hornswoggle getting a surprise roll-up somehow on Chavo making it 1-0. Chavo chases him to the back and the show continues on with live look-ins between segments of crazy happening for the next 55 minutes.

So there you go. I just made a way that Chavo and Hornswoggle could realistically work a 60 minute Iron Man Match. You're welcome.
