It was a great match, one of the better Orton matches lately. Great story told.
Agreed. But lets be honest, this thread isn't about the match, is it?

The match was fantastic.
Kudos to Orton for winning his second World Heavyweight Championship. But I am kind of sad that Christian had such a short reign :(

Orton's been consistently good to great in the ring since WrestleMania. He's been putting on excellent matches on every show. Now granted he's been wrestling Punk, Ziggler, Christian, Mysterio, Del Rio who are all fantastic wrestlers, but he's been holding his own.
Still can't stand his promos though.
IDEA!
They should've drafted Punk over to Smackdown instead and had him take the title off Christian, then started a heel Punk vs face Christian feud over the World Title where Punk is trying to seduce Christian into the straight edge lifestyle. The promos and matches would've been fucking awesome.

Christian will get a rematch at Over the Limit, maybe at the PPV after that, and then it's over. Christian has hit the glass ceiling and will go back down to mid to uppermidcard range
Agreed. But lets be honest, this thread isn't about the match, is it?

Christian's reaction after losing the title was gold.
Just two weeks in and I'm liking Orton on Smackdown already though. I find it hard to be negative about anything going on on that show. It's sooo good!
I'm feeling like big things are ahead for Christian. Likely as a heel... but he's just stellar in every way. Just needs the booking to showcase it.
But there's no need for it not to be, you just can't help but bite every single time.
If only there was a thread dedicated to this week's SmackDown in which we could discuss the match...
This thread is simply to troll, let's not pretend it's not.

Everything is what you make it.
If we make this thread about the match we then have 3 threads which are for all intents and purposes discussing the same subject.
Needless threads are almost as annoying as those made for the express purpose of trolling.
But whatever. That's tpdub I guess.

Technically, Orton (temporarily) retired Jericho so yeah.

If Chris Jericho does return to the WWE, the idea of Vitamin C reuniting and running SmackDown! gives me the hornies.
I'm really interested to see how Orton goes on SmackDown!. The writing on that show is just more enjoyable and less erratic than that of RAW's, and I personally feel that Orton will be allowed to really flourish there. I also like the idea of Orton, Rhodes & DiBiase being on the same show again. There's one PPV match right there waiting to happen.
Also, the WWE doesn't just give the World Title to people they have no faith in. Also, the story of the night was actually about how special Christian's title win was. They hyped up how it was his dream, how hard he's worked, and they had him reveal that one of the top stars has said "you deserve it." There was no panic button that needed to be pressed -- this was all angle. It's just whether they go with Christian trying to redeem himself, battling up the ranks to his eventual face vs. face rematch with Orton, or whether they go with the snap heel turn. Personally, I'd go with the first option, and then have Christian put his career on the line or something, then cheat his ass off to win. Orton vs. Christian could be feud of the year, peeps.
Also, Orton winning the World Title, while not creative, is certainly a good business move. Now Cena and Orton are the top guys -- and that is the way the WWE wants it.

New face that beats Orton will become instant star. I'm thinking WWE is gonna go with that quick since they know they need to build more stars.

I disagree. I think Orton as champ is probably the best immediate business decision they can make. Cena and Orton are the top two in the WWE. Cena having one title and Orton having the other is simply the WWE putting their best foot forward.
That being said, someone will defeat Orton, and they will look amazing doing it. But I'm pretty sure the plan is for Orton to be the champ because he's one of the most over and proven commodities in the business -- and not merely to make a new star.
If I had to guest, I'd say that Orton drops the World Heavyweight Title to a heel Christian or Sheamus next. Both of them have been champion before.

I kind of like Orton's attempt at a beard. It's not really working, but it reminds you that he is young, and can do whatever the fuck he wants because he's Randy Orton. Any person can hide behind a bad-ass beard, but it takes a bad-ass to hide behind a pussy one. It's like Orton's begging people to make fun of it.

Tell that to Ziggler. At least Christian had the belt for 2/5 days. He had the title for half a show.
I suppose everyone was too busy beating the dead whore that is "Christian lost, suck it fanboy!!!" trolling to point out that fact.
Also, although it was blown up for "comedic" effect, that reaction by Christian after losing, along with that build of "not being sure I'm the guy" seems to mean some sort of depth for character... possibly even to get people more behind him for his next win instead of "win it for Edge" sympathy reign.
I am a huge, albeit un-numbered, peep, but I'm not gonna get all fetal and butthurt because his first reign wasn't longer than a piss break. Lets just see where all this goes instead of touting him as the new Rock or condemning him as a perma-curtain jerker merely over what has happened in the last two weeks.

relevant. nice work.
Just want to make a point to mention that the match with Orton was a great match. Sure it sucks that Christian's first title reign was a short one, but it wasn't like it was an uncompetitive match. I think this match did a fantastic job at establishing Christian as a perennial contender. Also want to say that Orton did a fantastic job putting Christian over in this match, even with Christian losing, Orton had that look of "what is it going to take to end this" going on.

Yeah, I'm sure Ziggler's really depressed that the WWE made him an official World Heavyweight Champion during the lead-in to what they were trying to hype as one of their biggest WrestleManias ever when they really could have had the entire thing reversed by Teddy Long and stripped from the record.
The WWE didn't have to put the World Title on Ziggler. If a guy needs a sign of faith that you will one day get a shot in the company, I don't see how you can get any better than being given a courtesy World Heavyweight Title reign.

Christian being the face of Smackdown is a ratings disaster.
I don't understand this "Face of SmackDown" concept. Or booking the entire show around one guy.
Surely it'd be better to concentrate on everyone on the show top to bottom? To make the whole show enjoyable from top to bottom? To push a number of talents in attempt to get the roster of stars over.
By positioning Orton as the "Cena of SmackDown" do they not risk ramming him down our throats and getting the same reaction that Cena gets?
Also, when did being considered a "reliable hand" become a bad thing? I know from Jericho's book that this is part of the reason why he left in 2005. How is it a bad thing to be a guy that they can trust to go out there and perform for the crowd, put on a good match and drop a decent promo on a weekily basis?
In any other business surely "Mr Reliable" would be your go-to guy in a sticky situation? Why risk pushing/promoting someone new when you have somebody you know can do a good job for you?

It seems to be a combination of being complacent and moving merch. Think about Austin in WCW... he was used, for example, to get Alex Wright over because Alex "had the look". Guys like Matt Hardy, Chavo, Finlay, Goldie, etc., tend to get lost in the shuffle of the scramble to push someone who's face can sell shirts... fuck. I had a point here, but I got distracted by work related things and forgot where I was going with this. Sorry.

Smackdown's lowest rating of the year was after the news that Christian dropped the title to Randy Orton on the show. The low rating was NOT due to Christian being the World Heavyweight Champion. The low ratings were due to advance knowledge of a shitty championship switch happening.
I guess the audience was trying to tell the WWE of what they thought about it.

I'm not saying he's new. Quite the opposite. I'm saying, when they are in a tough spot (i.e. a lack of Main Event talent on SmackDown), why risk the top spot on a new guy that might or might not flourish when you have veterans that are tried, tested and reliable who they can push?
I guess the area of contention is whether a guy like Christian who has been around "forever" can get over at all though. I firmly believe that almost anyone with enough inring talent/mic skill can be a top guy with the right push. Honestly, aside from youth, what seperates a Wade Barrett from a Christian? In my opinion, one massive push.

Christian was never the face of SmackDown!, and never will be. The Undertaker and Randy Orton are going to be the guys promoted heavily. Christian could eventually get there if he is consistently pushed.

Weren't ratings also down with Randy Orton as champ? Not sure, but I seem to recall people talking about how The Rock pulled them out of a slump. I'm actually legitimately asking here.
