What Would Kevin Do?

I haven't seen much about him on here, so I figured I should try to enlighten you a bit. Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover aka Troy from Community, aka etc, etc, etc is pretty fucking amazing.
He's easily in my top 5 rappers out there right now, the beats are good, his lyrics are great, and his music actually has emotion, which is really lacking these days.
He's currently doing a comedy/music tour, which I'll be seeing next week. His album Culdesac, his new EP, and his older mix tapes are all up online to download for free (his doing, he doesn't sell his music, he just gives it away.)
Seriously, if you haven't heard him, check it out. You can thank me later.

WTF he is Donald Glover? Like Childish Gambino a lot, but never really knew anything about him. That's just wild!

To each their own. You're one of the few people I've heard actually complain about him though. Definitely better than 90% of the crap that gets put out though, IMO.

New Childish Gambino, "All the Shine", second song off the upcoming Camp album (11/15/2011)
Yes FakeLaser, I know you're not feeling it.

Definitely more "personal" sounding. I'm betting the only reason this was released right now was because an unfinished version was leaked on the web, so he decided to release the final version.

I just like that he got the name Childish Gambino from a Wu Tang Clan name generator on some website.

Yes, it's Pitchfork. I don't really need to go into a whole rant on Pitchfork right now.

But that is one of the most epic undressings I've ever read.
1.6 is like leaving a penny for a waiter.
but it's Pitchfork. Carrot Top could verbally tear something apart but he's still Carrot Top

Yeah, but Carrot top couldn't verbally tear something apart well.

Pretty epic review, I have to say. Haven't listened to the album tho.

I'm middle of the road on Childish Gambino's older stuff. I love some of his tracks, but hate the ones that sound too overproduced. He tries to go for something that sounds "epic" in some songs, and I don't really like it.
However, I kind of hate Pitchfork. Sometimes it feels more like they're trying to outdo each others in who's going to sound the most pretentious while reviewing an album, no matter if it's a positive or negative review.

I find this hard not to agree with. Also, that review seems less like an "epic undressing" and more like someone who was determined to shit on an album and convince others not to give it a chance. Because honestly, even if you don't like Childish Gambino, if you listen to the album with a halfway open mind, you're going to agree that the score given there is very low.
Then again, with that said, people love Das Racist, and I can barely get through one of their songs. (Oddly enough, I keep trying to listen to them randomly, but I just can't get into it.) So hey, what do I know? Meh, I know what I like I suppose.

I don't think it's a matter of trying to be pretentious, they just look at albums through a different framework than a lot of other publications. They treat albums like works of art and critique them through that lens. Not saying that this is the right/wrong way to look at music, but they are definitely not populists (like Rolling Stone, AV Club or any other major publication really)

Finally listened to this record by the way, 1.6 is definitely them trying to make a statement rather than to accurately review the album.. but again it goes back to critiquing it as a piece of art rather than just music you bump in the car. Some catchy stuff, but I definitely see why they shat on it so hard. Before this I had only heard maybe 2 songs on hype machine and they seemed pretty solid, but yeah, it really is pretty shit.
I hate the persona he creates; he just comes off as a "fucking tool" who thinks he is way better than he is. Some catchy stuff for sure and I have to appreciate his production skill, but the album really leaves a "bad taste in my mouth". 1.6 does seem a little vindictive, though...Reminds me of their 2.5 or whatever for Mumford and Sons. Granted I really fucking hate Mumford and Sons, but it does come across as vindictive rather than an accurate assessment of the music.
new mixtape out today from iamdonald.com

Tina Fey rapping on that last track is a mindfuck.
Also good tape but I prefer Camp.
