View Full Version : WWE looks to break Guinness World record at WM 28

After the California Angels received publicity for setting a Guinness world record on May 10 for most costume masks worn at a single gathering, WWE discussed taking a stab at the record next year at WrestleMania XXVIII.

Company officials have discussed holding a singles match between Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara at the event. Should it occur, it will be the match where WWE aims for the record

Do you think they can pull it off?

Er, why fucking bother? How about i dunno, making sure wrestlemania doesn't suck as the main priority this time? I'm sure they'd rather break this stupid 'record' though.

What is the current world record?

I dunno about you, but a Sin Cara/Mysterio match would be awesome. Everyone in the crowd in masks would be the icing on the cake.

Cody Rhodes should bring back the bag heads.

70,000 people wearing paper bags on their heads would be awesome, and the environmentalists would be going fucking nuts about it.

Yeah it should be a great match, not fussed about this mask stuff though.

Yeah, if Vince wanting to break the highly coveted 'Most masked people in a single gathering" world record is what it takes for a Mysterio-Sin Cara match @ WM, I'm for it.

Buy a ticket, get a collectable mask. Reason to charge an extra $15 for tickets for something that costs like $2 to make = more money at the gate and publicity for it.

If they give the masks away for free, or a highly discounted price, I could see it. If you had to buy the full priced mask, I don't see enough people doing it.

I agree with the person who said it should be Cody Rhodes who breaks this record with Paper Bag masks. 70,000+ people with blank paper bag stares. ALL NIGHT. :y:

I say there's no chance in hell that's going to happen. If WrestleMania was held in Mexico City, then maybe. Other than that, they can hang that shit up.

They could easily do this as long as they're giving away the masks, be it under seats or upon entry. Would probably look great.

The crowd gets pissed off and starts chunking the masks towards the ring for the whole shows?

*After John Cena wins*

Josh Matthews: And here come the masks!
Vince (backstage): Oh, no! No, don't do that! You're suppose to be wearing them!
Josh Matthews: Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler now in the ring, pleading with the crowd for... for some kind of sanity.
Booker T: Uh-oh, and a barrage of masks now knocking Lawler unconscious.
Josh Matthews: Wow. This is uh... This is a black day for entertainment.

Especially if they do the giveaway split halfway down the hard camera side, with half Sin Cara and half Mysterio.

I think this would be a cool gimmick if they gave out 2 different masks: both for Mysterio and Sin Cara. It would be awesome to have the crowd split between the two. It would even work for face vs face, which usually suck for the most part.

That's what I was thinking. They could really make a good feud out of this and have people choose. Kind of like Leno/Conan and have Team Cara vs Team Mysterio. Obviously Mysterio is way more popular so they have a lot of work to do this year but I really think it could be huge. It could also increase wwe.com traffic if they have interactive things to go along with it.

like "who would you choose" or whatever.

This is a brilliant idea. Would be an awesome way to do a face vs face match, maybe have it as the opener, get some special shit going straight away. Sigh. Hope something even remotely close to this happens.

They have to do Sin Cara vs. Mysterio at Wrestlemania.

Can Sin Cara speak english at all?

This is kind of what ruins Wrestlemania for me now. It's so far beyond Wrestling, that the actual quality of the show doesn't really matter anymore, it's all about the 'bigness' or the 'spectacle'. If they can fill out an arena and break a world record, then that will probably become a priority over actually making the show itself good.

However, a Rey Mysterio vs. Sin Cara match would be pretty sweet. But would probably get knocked off the card or given three minutes. :-\

Exactly my fears. Just going to not assume the worst just yet! Though you're wrong on your last point about it being knocked of the card or something.

it would be a mainstream headline.

you know plenty of people in the building would refuse to do it just to be dickheads. or break them, or throw them, or some other stupid shit. does someone actually go around counting one by one to verify these records? that sounds mind-numbingly tedious and impossible.

From day 1 in 1985, WrestleMania has always been about 'bigness', the 'spectacle' and 'far beyond wrestling'. How could it possibly involve something that would become a priority over the rest of the show? They've done much more challenging things than this in the past. It's a case of handing out some free masks and giving people a cue to put them on, just another gimmick on an constantly gimmick heavy show. Really don't understand why anybody would be potentially bothered by something so trivial.

Mysterio vs. Cara seemed like a no-brainer the minute Cara debuted. The masks just add to the spectacle further.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mysterio "passes the torch" in the match.

I pretty much agree with the people who say:

a) Rey Mysterio vs. Sin Cara was pretty obvious from the moment the WWE signed Sin Cara, and at WrestleMania the match would just be more special.

b) People wearing masks would in no way hurt the event, and it'd actually be pretty cool, and get some publicity for the WWE, and get two of their potentially biggest merchandise movers some media attention.

c) It will, however, suck when the WWE does a "Did You Know?" that points out that Rey Mysterio, Triple H and Sin Cara all hold Guinness World Records, and something about the WWE out-performing all other entertainment companies with that.

If they're going to do a Mysterio/Sin Cara match at Mania any time soon, I would hope it would be a pasisng of the torch type match, where Rey would be on his way out of the company, and job to Sin Cara in a mask v. mask match.

What better way to give your successor the rub of a lifetime than to put him over in a match where, for the first time since 2002, you reveal your face to the fans who have followed since your WWE debut. It's too perfect to not execute. Rey goes out in a blaze of glory, and our faceless hero begins the next chapter in his career.

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2011, 01:25 AM
I was thinking about the idea of Mask vs. Mask. I didn't end up mentioning it, because once Rey loses the mask, what do you think happens to his merchandise sales? The masks sell really well, don't they? I guess they can always keep the masks for sale, as a symbol for what Rey Mysterio has achieved throughout his career, etc. "I can't wear the mask, but you guys can!" That sort of shit.

The big reason I'd suggest Mask vs. Mask, is because that shit would just add drama, and make the match even bigger. It'd be the rave in Mexico, which have been supplying the WWE with a lot of business lately.
