Macho Man Randy Savage Dies In Car Accident

9 minutes ago by TMZ Staff

Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the most famous wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida ... TMZ has learned.

0519_macho_man_ex_getty

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 10 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."

Incredibly sad that it might take something like this for it to happen but I really hope he gets his, rightfully earned, spot in the Hall of Fame. One of the best workers in the 80s who gave the Warrior his best match and a number of great matches with Flair and Steamboat.

Macho Man, I salute you.

There has to be. It wasn't your 'typical wrestler death' that they might want to avoid and given his history with the company etc.

Him and Hogan were huge mainstream icons in the 1980s and early 1990s so it makes sense for a lot of people to talk about him either as part of their childhood memories or the early boom of WWF and wrestling.

It's going to be so incredibly sad watching Lanny Poffo up at the Hall of Fame, receiving the honor on behalf of "The Macho Man"...should've been in a LONG time ago...

...part of me says "They shouldn't even bother to induct him now", because it would've made more sense to do it while ha was alive, so he could stand up there himself, receive the honor, give out his speech, hear the applause of the crowd, feel the love, after so many years of going out there and entertaining us...but he DOES deserve the honor...

...it's so sad, because when he did his little promo with the "Macho Man" action figure, he said 2011 would be the year of the Macho Man...

Former pro wrestling star "Macho Man" Randy Savage is dead after suffering a heart attack while driving near Tampa, Fla., on Friday morning, according to TMZ.

The celebrity gossip website reported that Savage, whose real name is Randy Poffo, lost control of his Jeep Wrangler and crashed into a tree went he went into medical distress.

Poffo was 58.

His wife Lynn was a passenger in the vehicle but survived with "minor injuries," TMZ reported.

Members of the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating. An autopsy is scheduled to confirm the cause of death.

Savage was a wrestling superstar in the late 1980s and 1990s, first with the World Wrestling Federation and later with World Championship Wrestling, holding various championship belts.

He was well-known for spouting catchphrases in his rough and raspy voice, scripted and real-life feuds with the likes of Hulk Hogan and colourful ring attire.

Friends, former co-workers and a legion of fans took to the Internet with condolences and messages of disbelief upon learning of Poffo's death.

On Twitter, the hashtag #ripmachoman was one of the world's top trending topics Friday afternoon, along with the words "Savage," "WrestleMania" and "Hulk Hogan," who was an in-ring ally and foe during Poffo's wrestling career.

Hogan tweets: 'We miss him'

Hogan tweeted about Poffo's death, saying the pair "finally started to talk and communicate" after 10 years of silence.

"He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he's happy and in a better place and we miss him," Hogan wrote on his official Twitter account.

Former WWE star Trish Stratus, who hails from Richmond Hill, offered her condolences on Twitter.

"Rest in peace Randy - my first inspiration in the ring. My prayers & condolences to the Savage family," Stratus tweeted.

Very sad news.

I think anyone that grew up in the 80's and was a wrestling fan couldn't help but love The Macho Man. The guy was a true talent and a man that has provided any fan of wrestling with hours upon hours of entertainment throughout his life. When I heard he was in his late fifties I thought to myself "he lived a long life for a wrestler." And I hate that that was my first thought. 58 is way too young for anyone to go. I'm a true believer in true love and in the afterlife, from everything I've read Randy Savage and Elizabeth had one of those tragically twisted romances but it sounded like they always cared for one another. I'm comforted by the fact that somewhere they are reunited once again.

Every time one of these wrestlers die a little pice of my childhood goes with them, and that's okay. There will always be the memories and I have my fair share of Randy Savage matches in my DVD collection that I can watch and think fondly upon.

I'm sure some of you are grieved by the fact that he never had his day in the sun entering the WWE Hall of Fame. Take heart with the idea that no one that ever saw Randy Savage wrestler had any doubt that he is one of the greatest of all time.

Here's something some of you may not have seen of Macho Man... Randy Savage on King of the Hill

What really sucks about this more than anything, as some have noted, is that he didn't die of natural causes while sleeping, or after a long stay at a hospital, etc...

...a heart attack while driving that results in a head-on collision with a tree...

...it's horrible.

I heard about this earlier today, while running my errands. I had to stop and just go home, I was so shocked.

Macho Man, one of the reasons I stayed watching wrestling. Such a character, the voice, his matches, how could you NOT follow this guy!? He was the definition of "Larger than life" and it's sad to not have him around, but at least we will always have the memories.

I respect Randy Savage more than Hulk Hogan for these reasons...

1. He was always willing to put over talent. (examples: Ricky Steamboat, Ultimate Warrior, Diamond Dallas Page)
2. He shows his age gracefully, instead of hiding it.
3. He knew when to retire.

Me and my father grew up on Randy Savage. My dad watched him starting out in the early 1970s, especially when he was in the Georgia Championship Wrestling territory. When I started watching in the late 1980s (1988, to be exact), he was already in the WWF. And I saw his career from 1988, until he retired in 2005. I also have a rare VHS of a couple of his matches from the CWA in Memphis, which included a cage match with Jerry Lawler and a tag match, where he teamed up with his brother against The Rock & Roll Express (and it's the one where he piledrives Ricky Morton thru a table).

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this gutted me today. didn't ever think Macho Man would EVER die. Hulk Hogan, Macho Man and Ultimate Warrior. Those are the three that I credit with hooking me on wrestling when I started watching. Savage will always go down as one of the best in every single category you can think of in your "best of" lists.

always will have his Mania 7 match with Warrior in my top 5 matches list, but he put on so many good one's.

we definately lost a Legend today

Savage was never my favorite, but he was always entertaining. He was a harder worker than most of the main event of his time, and actually carried the Warrior to an excellent match at Mania 8. Sure, he was pretty nuts, but at least it was a good kind of nuts that didn't seem to damage himself or those around him. A selfish part of me is kind of grateful that he didn't ever become a complete mockery or disgrace so that we can actually remember him fondly and warmly. Still, far too young. The world is a lot less Macho for having lost you, Randy.

Okay, for the record, once and for all, the Stephanie McMahon rumor is false. The real reason Randy left the WWF in 1994, was because he wanted to wrestle more, while Vince wanted him just as a color commentator.

I'm super bummed. Savage was not only an awesome character, but a great wrestler. Although he became a little wacky, I respect that he stopped wrestling when the time was right. It sucks that we never got to see him back in WWE even if it was for a HOF appearance. Maybe Savage wanted to be off WWE tv. Who knows.

I wonder if the heart attack was caused by prior damage to his body. Still sad regardless.

I actually feel for Hogan - love him or hate him, he does looks genuinely gutted by all of this.

This is terrible news and a bad week for this website as a whole.

I also partially agree with Aguakate regarding Savage and the HOF. Whilst he should have been in there years ago (and should still be put in even now), there will always be that stigma that his death is what got him into the HOF when his career achievements alone should have been enough. But whats done is done...as long as he is put in there either way.

Randy Savage.

Despite whatever rumours have been circulated about him, if they are true or note, does not affect his legacy.

In my opinion Randy Savage deserves one of the biggest sendoffs/memorials in WWE history

If what he did to Stephanie McMahon is true, then, yes it is a scar on his legacy.

"At the end of the day" Randy Savage is one of the most influencial pop icons of the 1980's and 1990's. If Vince McMahon knows what is right for busienss (and I believe he does) there will be a Randy Savage package shown at the Over the Limit pay per view, and followed by a RAW tribute.

You cannot deny the fact that Randy Savage is an absolute icon.

While i agree with point 1 its hard to agree with the other 2, he techncially didn't retire at all and judging by the vids on which he talked about 2011 being his year it would seem he would possibly have made an appearence in WWE sometime this year (maybe in a type of match, who knows?). Also much like Hogan he was dying his hair and beard for a long time, its only since his wedding pics surfaced a year or so back he was grey.

I'm confused by the coroner's report. It noted no apparent cause of death or extensive bodily trauma.

If he died from injuries sustained in the crash or even from a heart attack that would be apparent right? Blunt force trauma or an examination of his arteries would prove those theories.

Does this mean drugs may have been involved after all? God I hope not.

WWE Hall of Famer George “The Animal” Steele, a former colleague of “Macho Man” Randy Savage, appeared on Busted Open with Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca, which airs Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sirius 92 and XM 207. During the interview appearance, he gave his opinion on why Savage has not been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

“That’s been said a lot of different ways, and there’s been a lot of different things said that are not true necessarily,” Steele said.

“I think that what happened with Randy, when his career was winding down with the WWF, Vince McMahon just loved Randy. After all everything Randy had done and he took him under his wing, and he wanted Randy after the ring was over with for him, he wanted him to be our spokesperson. He was traveling with Vince all the time. Randy was almost like a son, they were really tight. And then one day, we were at a TV meeting, and we got word that Randy, without calling Vince, had left and jumped to the WCW. I had never seen Vince McMahon broken before, he was crushed. It hurt him big time and I don’t think he ever got over that. I think that’s the real problem to be honest with you.

“I heard all this other stuff that I think is garbage when it comes to Randy and relationships with daughters and all that stuff… I don’t think that’s anywhere’s close to the truth.”

Didnt know that he

What do you guys think? Didnt want to create a new thread.

Vince did make that very nice goodbye on Raw to Macho when he jumped, and maybe over time this is what made him mad. Vince grooming Macho as a best friends and backstage confidant and then he bounced? Would make sense as to why he never got the call back to the WWE.

Didn't find out about this until Sascha posted it on the tpww Facebook group while I was at work... Such a devastating loss for professional wrestling, Macho in his prime was head and shoulders above the rest what with his sometimes bizarre but awesome ring attire to his agility and finess in the ring. Needless to say I went out and bought the 3 disk DVD on savage a day later and still love watching savage vs flair at wm8. A true legend and icon in this business, r.i.p your Madness.
I was also at the wwe house show in Winnipeg last night and in the main event with Miz, Cena and R-truth, Miz gave cena a couple of top rope double axe handles and did some macho man poses which brought a few cheers from the mostly pro cena crowd which was pretty funny shit

death confirmed as being 'natural causes'. Sounds a lot like 'Typical Wrestler Death' to me :-\ At least he got a bit more time than a lot of others

An autopsy revealed that wrestling great Randy "Macho Man" Savage died from heart disease and not from any injury sustained in his May 20 car crash.
The St. Petersburg Medical Examiner's Office found that the 58-year-old had an enlarged heart with hardened coronary arteries. He became unresponsive while driving his Jeep Wrangler on a Florida highway in May and crashed into a tree. While the auto accident left minor cuts and bruises, the heart problems were the official cause of death of the wrestler.
At the time of his death, it was unknown whether the former wrestling star had died because of the heart issue or because the heart issue caused him to crash. The coroner said Savage was found with therapeutic levels of a number of prescribed drugs in his system and that alcohol wasn't a factor. There was no evidence he was taking any heart medication, leading to the assumption that Savage may not have known about his condition.
