at the last moment Vince decided to fire about 10 jobbers and offer Bret a chance to stay...
The best option I think would have been to do the screwjob and keep Bret of the WWF all the way to the night after Wrestlemania 14 where he would challenge Austin for the belt.
Austin Vs Hart Vs Rock at summerslam would have been great!
Where do you think it would have gone from there?

Wait, how would you think they could do the Screwjob and ever have Bret come back in 4 months? Contract or no, he was gone at that point. Shit, Neidhart and Bulldog and Crush walked out on the company after that night.

It would never work unless now your making the Screwjob itself one of those Russo style worked shoots he did a lot in WCW.
The lead up to the Screwjob was full of bickering and bad blood between Bret and HBK and then HBK's friends and Bret's friends. Vince was lucky only 4 people walked out instead of a lot more.

I believe even Mick Foley almost walked out. I think he didn't show up to Raw the next night. But he got persuaded to return the next week. And I remember reading something about Undertaker...not sure if he threatened to walk out or just stood up for Bret.

10 Talented guys would be out of work. That's all.

Also, Montreal was a work. OOOOH YEEEEAH.
If theoretically for the sake of the thread Vince and Bret came to an agreement that led to Bret staying, strictly from a story P.O.V, I would guess they'd have done what Bret thought was the planned finish for SS (the run in/schmoz) put the belt on Shawn somewhere afterwards (not Canada obviously because the social and economic crisis, scratch that, disaster they'd have been plunged into after Bret lost) and we'd have still gotten HBK/Austin/Tyson at Mania. HHH/Bret at Mania maybe? Bret/Owen II? Add Bret to the title match?

Bret would've been a dinosaur if he stayed around. He wouldn't have fit in.

I love Bret btw. Just saying intentionally or not, by the time the screwjob came around, it was time for Bret to move on.

But hey if Bret would've stayed with Vince, then maybe WCW wouldn't have fucked up Starrcade so bad. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Lets say that Vince said "I can't let Bret go." and renegotiated a mutual agreement to get bret to stay. This agreement was between Bret and Vince and no one else knew about it. As part of it Bret still "negotiated" with WCW. At the last moment before SS they told Michaels that tonight he will screw Bret in the ring.
At that point Bret was heel and this would turn him babyface by the time he returned. In the meanwhile Shawn would feud with Austin and WM14 would take place as it did.
Bret returns the night after WM14 and says Austin has never beaten him and he wants his title shot. Rock interupts Bret saying he has to get in line. Bret Vs Rock for title contention. The nation would interfere and it would be a disqualification.
This would lead to a Bret VS rock Vs Austin at Summerslam. For the finish The Nation would come to ringside followed by the Hart foundation for a brawl. Bret would become involved in the brawl. Austin would hit Rock from behind and pin him. The nation and hart foundation would end up battling each other in a survivor series type match.
and so on..

Sounds pretty stupid and awful to me, to be honest.

It would have been easy to drop 10 talents to keep him.....Vince made the right decision.... I don't see Bret fitting in with the Attitude Era at all....

Bret wouldn't have been kicked in the head by Goldberg and could have had a longer career...not to mention not having a stroke...

Owen would be alive. Bulldog would have never went to WCW and blew out his knee (ending his career early) on Warriors door, this leading to his painkiller addiction that ended his life early.

People wouldn't have been talking about Montreal forever.

Don't forget, Rick Rude also walked out in disgust.
And Davey Boy blew out his back, not his knee, on the Warrior's trap door.

Waitt. How did Rock suddenly get involved with the title picture in time for SummerSlam? Didn't they do Austin v Taker and Rock v HHH at SS98? How does Rock suddenly get pushed because Bret stays?
