View Full Version : Women's MMA: Yay or Nay?

Dana's said he isn't big on it, but the women's fights are usually the second highest rated fights of the night on the SF cards with only the main event topping them, so the ratings are there.
Also, I have yet to watch a boring women's fight. Cyborg destroys. Coenen's last fight was good to the end and Amanda Nunes ass vale tudo shorts is epic. Miesha Tate is good too and Sara Kaufman's slam on Roxanne Modaferri was Rampage-esque and top 10 on ESPN that night.
So how do you guys feel about women's mma? It's not like they're just there for tits and ass like in pro wrestling, the girls at the top can actually put on some good fights. Think Zuffa should do more to push women's MMA?

i don't think enough women do mma for it to be feasible. the dropoff between cyborg and say the 20th ranked woman in the world would be ridiculous.

I agree. They have some depth at 135, but that's about it. Cyborg is a destroyer at 145 though and I think that's why they have a hard time finding her legit opponents.
Do you think if women's MMA had the UFC brand behind it, it would appeal to more women fighters though and maybe grow the divisions a little faster than if it was just Bellator and Strikeforce?

I still say they could have TUF ,but all women. Why not try and expand the boundaries. I don't see any huge downside in it for just one season. If anything it'll be a positive.
Then from there the casual fan will have familiarity with some women fighters..they can sprinkle in a womens fight every 2-3 months or so..and I really don't see a downside.

The only trouble with a season of TUF that's all women is that if it ends up being anything but spectacular it's just going to strengthen Dana's stance on the issue and effectively kill any chance the idea has of becoming reality.
Otherwise, I agree with Crimson.

Another downside would be Joe Rogan referring to them as broads or bitches during the broadcast

I think Rogan has enough respect for the sport to avoid that. I too like the idea of an all women TUF. They'd need Carano and another pretty face as a coach to draw the interest though. I think it would actually be refreshing to see on tv.

Just saw two chicks in the 130 range fight last night and they were throwing harder punches than a couple of the dude fights on the show. Was a damn good fight

I have yet to watch a Strikeforce women's mma fight that wasn't entertaining. The only problem is that there is no depth. I do believe that Zuffa has the power to change that if they market women's MMA in earnest instead of letting it die on Showtime. I just don't think Dana cares enough to do it though.

I think Dana has said befire there will never be female UFC fighters..

Marloes Coenen got cut today. This seems to me to be a good indication that Zuffa isn't interested in women's MMA for the long term.
I only ever watched one, twas on the undercard of Fedor/Werdum, but it was really enjoyable.
So, um....yay.
