Hey,

I need a copy of Windows ME somehow. My dad's HDD died, and his recovery CD doesn't work. Compaq won't cover it essentially because it's a decade old, but he still has a serial number and all. So I should be able to just install it without cracking it or some shit, yes?

I'd buy a more recent OS, but I'm not sure his ancient computer can handle anything that was written post Y2K bug.

Go for Windows 98 instead, a lot more stable than Windows ME despite being older.

My father's Kalyx/Lara-level autistic and can't handle change.

To answer one of your questions, yes- you should be able to use your serial number on a downloaded version of Windows ME. The OS activation route was not active back then.

But ME is just 98 with a crappy paint job.

You could really just stick a picture of a blue screen on his monitor. He'll never know the difference. In seriousness though, 98SE is barely any different, bar it being more stable.

Simply change his OS and tell him you have no idea what his all this change stuff is about.
Explain that there was an update that is out of your control and then show him that Solitaire is still there and it's not a big deal.

Okay, so I convinced him to upgrade and got him a copy of Windows XP, legit. Except there's been trouble installing it. He's being a huge pain in the arse about this too, basically wanting me to return it but not being willing to wait.

Same question applies. If I snag an ISO of Windows XP Home Edition and mount it, then use it as the install, but use my father's key, will it count as a legit copy?

Yes. I did it when my XP laptop got fucked.

Windows XP support ends in 1000 days - good luck with that

I used to have issues with the XP install. Only way I could ever get it to install was to unplug all USB devices and take my wi-fi card out of the PCI slot.

Hold up are you putting XP on a comp that was killed by ME??? That nearly as bad as my friend who had an old comp that was updated to 95 try to put 7 on it... then procedded to call 7 a worthless POS because the computer could not instal it...
