View Full Version : Possible push of midcard relevance?

Something that has gone wholely under the radar this past RAW in the wake of "HOW MUCH OF THIS IS A SHOOT-GATE"(even by me, and that's a damn shame, because it struck a nerve, but in a good way) is the Ziggler segment. Rather, one thing he SAID during his promo: that even the World Champions aren't relevant, and as long as he has the US Title, he's "... the only champion that matters!"

Predictably, out comes Kofi, Vicki wears the cake, etc., but that all paled in comparason to that ONE statement.

Nevermind that he has the goods, got mic time, or anything else that will make this a Dolph surpfest. That's not the point either.

Here you have a guy who went from just carrying a belt that hasn't really meant fuck all and proclaimed, through putting himself over, of course, that it actually is worth something and not a stepping stone to something bigger or a placeholder hunk of gold.

Given the fact that there seem to be legit feuds over both the IC and US belts that aren't "loser of the next match goes on to main event status", does anyone else think this is going to last, or are the mid level belts soon back to going the way of the Tag Team titles?

I open the floor to you.

They need to bring the million dollar belt back. Thats the only one that matters.

You guys were trying to be funny, but:

- They missed the boat with the Million Dollar Belt when Teddy Jr. had it by suddenly scrapping it. Missed the ensuing US Championship feud with Danielson, too.

- And from what I understand, Ryder defended that belt down in Oz. It may become the new Hardcore Title, in that it started as a joke, then eventually evolved into a legit defended and recognized title.

Returning the midcard division to something more than just the bridge between working house shows and headlining PPVs has always seemed to be in the works for the longest time, with flashes of great matches between its competitors (a few even outshining their upper tier counterparts) as well as longer and better promos such as the aforementioned Ziggler 'only champion that matters' comments.

A finalization of that matter, that is to say returning the division to its rightful place of importance would be pretty cool as it would create a nice alternative from the uppercard matches, keeping them from going stale. It would also be a good niche for wrestlers such as D. Bryan to remain at, they'd be able to remain relevant and hone their craft without fear of being overshadowed by the likes of Orton or Cena.

As a final thought, thanks for that Cena/Mario pic Tom, as I will surely never be able to unsee that.

I like the idea that Dolph was poking at, but when he actually starts doing things on the show to make people think that his title may be the one that matters, I'll give them kudos. His matches are great, but even his presence on the Raw roster isn't a largely pertinent one. For example, when I'm watching Raw and Cena hasn't been on the show yet, I'll find myself thinking "I wonder when Cena's going to show up". When Dolph shows up, it's more like "Ohhhh yeah, he DOES work here".

I really enjoyed Dolph's promo on RAW. For the first time I can remember, he really owned the microphone and showed that he could get his own heat without Vickie doing all the talking and heat mongering for him.

I liked what he said about the belt as well. Before I was like, "Ok, this guy was just main eventing on Smackdown for the World Title. Even a former champion for a few minutes. So what? He goes to RAW and instead of continuing to try to be a main eventer, he immediately settles for fighting for the US Title?"

Now with his trying to build up the US Title like it means something, I guess I am ok with it.

If Dolph really wanted to bring the US title to the next level, he should have done a Live Sex Celebration with Vickie on Raw the night after he won it.

TGhe midcard being restored happens more often than CM Punk being in the doghouse.
