View Full Version : Randy Orton, I have misjudged you.

For a long time, I thought Randy Orton was bland and uninteresting. His viper/apex predator gimmick was cold and unemotional at most times, and that carried over into a lot of his matches. He never spiced it up and the only time he did anything exciting was when he used the punt, but they ruined that for me with overuse. I could not understand how this guy who was so boring and predictable was getting such huge pops on a nightly basis.

But god dammit, for the past 3-4 months Randy Orton has been nothing short of amazing. Ever since Wrestlemania he has been on fire. I don't know if the move to Smackdown and making him the star of the show has motivated him or what, but there is definitely something different about him. You can just feel the energy and the passion coming off of him when he's in the ring. For me, he's gone from guy I don't care if I see or not, to guy who can make a show great.

I will now open up the floor for any Randy Orton related questions and comments.

Yeah his meltdown last night was so good. He did everything perfectly. Also I don't think the table was supposed to break.

He's been working on this character for a year but it popped when he worked with CM Punk and then Christian, two great workers brought out the best in him. He's awesome now.

I'd say it was the feud with Christian. In the ring and outside of it, the feud has really bought a lot out of him, including a few moves he hasn't used since 2004.

He's been great. I kinda wanna see Teddy/Christian make him go through anger management in order to get his rematch at SummerSlam.

Supreme, for seven years I have disguised myself as a fat white man, with a enormous craving for Taco Bell and a mild fascination of male African American genitals, but today I reveal a secret I've lived with for most of the last decade. I am, in fact, Randall Orton the second. And I think you're a huge fag.

Good day sir!

...I'm still not sure whether Orton is bland, stale and boring, or if he just doesn't "put out" 100% most of the time, and just "mails it in"...

I was in the same boat a bit, I loved his promos but the matches not so much. He's been awesome in the ring against Christian and probably had MOTN in the last 2 PPVs before MITB. Hoping that it is a new, fresh Orton and not just awesome chemistry with Christian.

Honestly I don't see much of a difference if anything he comes accross as more of a pussy when he talks about having problems with anger management issues.

Orton has been consistently excellent since he "matured" 4-5 years ago and has really been "on it" across the board for 2-3 years now (since his "big" injury), I don't know what you bastards have been watching. He doesn't have Punk's current white hot momentum but few guys ever get that kind of buzz for whatever period of time but he's probably the most complete package/broadest appeal in professional wrestling.

I've never bought into his character before now. His cold, calculated killer routine usually came across as "I'm sleepy and this is the maximum amount of energy I'm gonna put into this tonight."

Also think I secretly hated the RKO because so many of the "out of nowhere" spots were either really predictable or unnatural and forced his opponents to look like retards who just jump into another guy's finisher.

But that's all in the past now. He's stolen my heart.

I think, if anything, the cold-hearted gimmick handcuffed Orton in the ring. He had to be slow and methodical - or "boring".

Still not a big fan of his promo.

He still needs to work on his promos since most of the time they feel flat or boring but he did a great job developing his character and tends to be more consistent with good matches than Cena at ppvs.

I think the problem is he works out very well as a heel or tweener but he tends to get stale a lot quicker as a face for some strange reason.

Orton has always been decent on the mic, but his character seems stale. The whole Apex predator gimmick isn't quite as good as his Legend Killer gimmick. I don't know if injuries cause his lack of effort, but he doesn't give his best each time he wrestles. I know back when he won the belt after the draft he seemed indifferent to being the WHC.

Like others have said, I'm still not huge on his monotone delivery of promos. His matches with Christian definitely have brought out the best in him. I've really come to enjoy watching him over the last few months.

Randy Orton has always been great. Even his "blue chipper" stuff on SmackDown! when he debuted showed he had talent. His RNN and then Evolution run was fantastic, and really showed he could be a major star. His face turn was kind of shitty (okay -- really shitty), and the WWE had no clue what they were doing, and Orton was out of his depth. I do believe that was one of the biggest droppings of a ball I have personally witnessed as a fan.

That being said, Orton really found how to play a heel character out of that. A heel character that could translate to a babyface so naturally. Orton is still the same guy, but people cheer him so naturally now. He's really had it mastered.

That being said, I agree with all the criticisms, too. I found his promos quite boring, and I found his ring work often quite tedious. Not technically bad, but I'll be honest -- I have skipped over more than a few of his matches, because I just didn't care. However, when Orton is working with a villain you care about, he is great. CM Punk and Christian have both proven that.

Since his SmackDown! move, I have really loved his promos, too. They sound...threatening. More so than they were before. When Orton was losing his shit with Christian on SmackDown!, and pretty much threatened Christian's life, I almost got chills. It helps that Christian finds just the right notes to strike. Technically, Christian has a point with everything he says -- but he's become so wormy that you can understand booing him.

The first time he came out on Smackdown he was like old Randy, back when he was in Evolution, he actually showed a little bit of passion charisma like he used to have.

Right now, they have the best mix of viper/killer with charisma and it's the best he's been in a long time.

But as has already been said, having Punk and Christian as opponants will help him.

I would have liked to have seen Orton win the US Title from Ambrose in some sort of crooked fashion. I get that the company wants to get the US Title away from the Shield vs. Evolution feud, but it would have given Orton and Ambrose something to fight over in a few TV matches. Orton could have bragged about how he had won every single title in WWE with it.
