Besides the occasional ppv or Wrestlemania, when did the WWE start using licensed music to promote ppvs on a regular basis?
Did WCW ever do the same or only used company produced music?
I've notice of late that TNA has been doing the same to help promote their ppvs or give it a theme.

The first one I remember was ACDC's "Highway to Hell" for Summerslam 1998.....

Not sure when exactly they started it but seems like every PPV since '07 has had a real song for a theme.

I think it has been quite longer than that

This is the first one I remember as well, but I think (not gospel) they kind of still alterneated between some of the "classic" and production themes & licenced tunes for a couple of years whilst stepping up towards monthly PPVs, then finally being almost all licenced.

I remember in like 98 There was a PPV theme using Sweet Home alabama, and the PPV tagline was "Lord Im Coming home to you"
Wasn't that for Armageddon 2000?
Yep.

They used The End by The Doors a few times. That was always a favourite of mine.

Yeah mid '98 sounds about right...or at least that..it could have been earlier too. WCW rarely used actual songs for their ppv's. I remember Road Wild '98 having a Travis Tritt tune, but other than that I can't think of anything.

Fuck me running, it was that late? I was thinking it was during the Taker vs Austin feud in 98

Looks like late 2001 was when they started using solely licensed music. No Mercy 2001 looks to have been the start of a good solid run of PPVs that didn't use production music.

Did they actually use The End? I know they had a Johnston-produced song that was basically along the same lines that they used a few times.

No that was the Match Made in Heaven and the Match Made in Hell. Highway to hell wasn't used.
They used the normal feel the heat Summerslam theme song for the event which kicks ass.

Highway to Hell was SS 98 100%, awesome awesome theme for a PPV and what a fucking mega main event on that one.
