View Full Version : The DDP/Taker/Sara storyline from a long time ago...

What were your guys' thoughts on it? It still continues to be one of my favorite storylines, but I've read that a lot of people hated it. YOUR VIEWS?!
I thought the reveal was great, wasn't really a better "face" in WCW to appear from under that balaclava than DDP and didn't have a problem with the whole stalker schtick, the "make me famous" tagline was great. It was pretty much all downhill from there though, it was so one-sided it just wasn't much fun after a while
MAD RESPECT for DDP also, could have sat at home and kept collecting his WCW/TimeWarner deal for however long like Nash, Goldberg and co but he took like 40 cents to the dollar or something on the rest of it so he could "go back to work"

Could have been good but they had Page be the bitch. He got beat by Sara in a match even though Taker interfered.
Also didn't make sense that he would hunt Sara Butterface when he was with Kimberly.

I remember hearing / reading comments from DDP that he wanted a program with the Rock over being "the real peoples champ" but Vince talked him into this instead. The Rock thing probably would have been much better overall.
As great as DDP was the angle seemed a bit misplaced, even though he was the only viable choice to do it. The whole dickish stalker thing seemed more like something a Scott Steiner / Buff Bagwell would do really. Mike Awesome could have also worked well in this role if Russo hadnt destroyed his cred with awful gimmicks.

When I first heard the idea, it seems like it would have been a great idea. DDP vs The Undertaker? Let's see it!
What they did with it though sucked, just like any WCW thing WWE did.

I marked out huge when DDP was revealed the stalker! The Invasion was only just slowly kicking off with appearance by midcard guys like Lance Storm and Hugh Morris, but then DDP unmasked and I was like 'OMFG it's DDP!!!!!'.
The angle didn't really do much in DDP's favour though. :(
As for the stalking thing, it was revealed that he only did it to get under 'Taker's skin. As someone said above, why anyone would go after Sara when they have Kimberly sat at home would be a joke.

Didn't have a problem with the angle per se, but with the use of DDP in the role. He was probably the second biggest name (after Booker T) that WCW had left for the Invasion. Would have liked to see him play some other role in the whole ordeal.

Yeah that's two extremes in the poll... and I'm kind of in the middle... was awesome to see DDP... but then... it just kind of went... poof...

According to the storyline, DDP gave up this:

for this:

On a related note, I sure am tired of eating Filet Mignon every day. A cold Big Mac would be awesome right about now.
According to the storyline, there was no mention of Kimberley Page even existing and DDP made it quite clear he was doing it to get at Undertaker.

It's hard to believe how much WWE fucked up the Invasion Angle.
In paper, DDP vs. Taker sounded great. But they just fucked it up so bad. DDP pretty much jobbed to both Sara and Taker throughout the whole angle. I guess no blame on Sting for not even wanting to touch WWE..

My thoughts on this have been said by pretty much everybody else. DDP is probably one of my favourites of all time so obviously I was pretty happy when he showed up, but it was a bit shit that he didn't get much of a good run in the WWE.

It started off good but I didn't care for the direction it eventually took.

Always was a fan of DDP. The man is actually a great worker in the ring, pretty solid on the mic and has a ton of charisma. I too was stoked to see him debut, even as the stalker. From there though, like others have said, the feud really went downhill. I would've liked to have seen him get a bigger push and longer run with the WWE.

I hated it, but no because of DDP.
I marked out big time when DDP came out and unmasked and had chills at his promo, I hated the fact that DDP didn't receive a push till after the Invasion ended and couldn't really pull out a win what so ever.
I mean he lost to Sara Calloway, and he wasn't even in the Winner Takes All Match at Survivor Series, despite possibly being the most over guy to debut during the invasion, outside of RVD.

It was an interesting idea and started off well but after the whole Invasion ppv, it went all downhill with DDP being made to look like a huge joke.
Stopped caring once even Sara was able to be dominate for a while against him to go along with Taker's dominance at that point.
Besides ruining what could have been a great DDP vs Taker feud and not even bothering with Rock vs DDP for undisputed People's champion, the WWE didn't even bother to have him come back during Orton's "Legend Killer" gimmick to have a Diamond Cutter vs RKO feud.

Yeah I was kinda gutted about that. Nothing against Shane McMahon, but in Kayfabe I always though DDP, the three time WCW Champion, would help out the Alliance side a bit more.
Plus, it would have meant they'd be three legit ECW/WCW guys on Team Alliance instead of two. :|

This sums it up for me really. Last line pretty much sums up the entire Invasion honestly.

It also sucked because they only had DDP and Booker T, as far as main event guys go. And Booker T and DDP had only recently become main event level, to top it off. Without the steiners, goldberg, mysterio, luger, sting, and the nwo, it wasn't really a wcw invasion.
Honestly, I think with all those guys out of the picture, they should have built Mike Awesome up as a bigger threat.

it was alright, but it could have been better (i.e. having it last for more than a couple of months)

I agree that the reveal was great but the feud as a whole totally buried DDP and he never recovered from it. He should been one of the top 3-4 guys on the WCW side of the Invasion and main eventing or at least in the upper card, but instead, just a few months later he was feuding with Christian for the European title.
The whole motivational speaker gimmick was okay, but it shouldn't have been giving to a former World Champion/main eventer.
I very much believe that DDP would have been a top face for a couple of years if they had booked him seriously.
that gimmick was 100% DDP's idea/creation and so forth

I actually thought it was a great storyline and an innovative way to bring in DDP. Unfortunately, WWE had no idea of how to properly use DDP, so he got lost in the shuffle like other WCW guys. Another classic fuck up by WWE. A Rock vs. DDP People's Champ match would've been interesting. Or maybe even an Austin/DDP match could've been big...

I always brought DDP into WWF and gave him at least one good world title run/feud back in my Promotion Wars/Extreme Warfare/sim playing days.
Promotion Wars and EWR, man that takes me back. Good times!
Now I want to see if I can't dig up an old version and get it to play on my macbook. Probably not since they were Windows games.

Ya, but that doesn't mean it was a good idea. I think if he hadn't buried in the Undertaker feud, he wouldn't have needed a new gimmick anyway. I would speculate that DDP probably thought he needed something to save his WWE career.

I remember it being a total surprize when it was DDP under the mask.
The two never got in the ring and faced each other one-on-one though. The WWF jumped the angle through too many hoops without delivering any bang until it got to a point where it you just no longer cared. Cue Sara pinning DDP.

Marked out when the stalker was revealed as DDP, started out good, killed it when Sara wrestled him and bringing Kanyon and Kane in the mix. Plus in KOTR DDP was beaten like a bloody jobber.

I loved the reveal and DDP's promo about going after the biggest dog in the yard. But what irked me was how Page said he only did it to get Taker's attention, but then they kept at it like Page was a sick pervert stalker. After his reveal, they didn't need Sara anymore. Her part was done.

Yeah, Sara sure shouldn't have been a main focus in the fued. DDP had so much momentum with his debut, the match should've been huge. Unfortunately, everything that followed only made DDP look weak and inferior to any WWE star....

I saw nothing significant out of that story line save for the initial random shock that DD "Fuckin'" P of all people was Sara's 'stalker'.
The way he'd act out sometimes about being turned on with seeing Sara get accidentally bronskied by Undertaker and run off to his car were funny but the angle itself was dumb.
It underscored ambiguity that either WWE was too cocky about where they would go with the "Invasion" or that they simply threw shit at the wall and kept notes on whatever stuck the longest and went with it.
This angle was no exception, particularly with Taker and Kane DECIMATING DDP and Kanyon at Summerslam that year.
That began the misuse of DDP, but that's a whole different animal altogether.

It still bothers me how badly the WWE ruined Diamond Dallas Page. He got buried by the The Undertaker and went right down the card. I was hoping for a DDP/Austin feud. There was no way a fan couldn't get behind WCW's version of DDP.

Jusr another casualty of WWE misusing any WCW guy who dared to step foot in a WWE ring. DDP proved he had passion for wrestling by not sitting at home and collecting his paycheck(like most other big WCW names). And how did WWE repay him??? By allowing Sara to pin him, thus making him a joke and turning him into a mid card guy that had potential to be huge.
There were so many other matches DDP could have had to make WWE money, it's laughable to think none of them happened. DDP vs. Rock, or DDP vs. Austin could have been major matches if booked properly...

I have no idea why they never had DDP vs. Austin. Austin should’ve stayed face and faced DDP at SummerSlam instead of turning heel for no reason.
DDP and the WCW guys should’ve destroyed The Undertaker at King of the Ring. That was the way to get him over.
