For the upcoming Blu-Ray release of the Star Wars films, George Lucas has shat upon his own work - again.

If I learned anything from watching Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, it's that Darth Vader is corrupt. He is evil all the way to his mechanized core. Despite Vader's son entreating him to see the good inside him in Return of the Jedi, it is too late for him. That is, until Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, is forced to watch his only son be tortured to death by the Emperor who corrupted him. There is no audible reaction, but Lord Vader is overcome by the man he used to be and suddenly rebels against his former master, tossing the frail body still emitting lightning into the Death Star core where it finally explodes. The silent, stoic, selfless act is Anakin Skywalker's last, all the more potent because of it required no dialogue.

Until now.

For the Blu-Ray release of all six films of bearing the name Star Wars coming out on September 15th, Mr. George Lucas has once again changed a few things. Loyal fans may remember the addition of plot and character changing images such as Greedo shooting first and young Hayden Christensen appearing as a ghost at the end of Jedi when Lucas reissued the Special Edition of his films.

The Blu-Rays change even more, the most egregious being Vader uttering, "No. NOOOOOO!" right before he betrays Emperor Palpatine. The video above shows the change, which was confirmed by a representative at LucasArts via email to the New York Times: "Yes - Darth says NO."

I get it. I get that Lucas can't help tinkering with his films. He must hate the backlash that the "NOOOOOOOO!" received from the end of Revenge of the Sith and he wants to make it work thematically by calling it back (forward?) in Jedi.

But come the fuck on, George. Please stop. You obviously don't understand how you made great films in the 70s & 80s if you keep making these changes. What's next? You add Jar Jar Binks to the cantina scene, or re-record Alec Guinness's dialogue in Star Wars to include midi-chlorians?

This further proves that Lucas only made the original Star Wars films by accident. I now officially regret pre-ordering the blu-ray sex-ology back in January. I was going to give the prequels another shot ... maybe they weren't as bad as I had thought ... well, screw that.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I planned on buying it. This won't discourage me from still doing so, but the scene was definitely better sans dialogue.

We still have those original versions, I think it was a 'big deal' a few years ago, just for the 'Greedo Shoots First' crowd.

Biggs and Wedge need to be replaced with Jar Jar and Watto.

Chewbacca should probably get a slap bass solo at some point during A New Hope too.

We have them. On DVD. If you want anything better, wait until the next video disc technology is about to dominate. George will release them then.

Absurd to the fucking core.
Didn't he learn the lesson the first time with adding extra shit like this?

Yes. He learned that he can sell a gajillion copies and that even most of the nerds who hate it will buy it.

His name really must be George Unneccessary Lucas.

But...But this is how he always imagined it!

...Forget the fact that the last TWO times he changed the series, he could have done this as well, so that excuse no longer holds up....

I really think the article was right in one sense. This sort of thing does demonstrate that the original series was a fluke.

We still have those original versions, I think it was a 'big deal' a few years ago, just for the 'Greedo Shoots First' crowd.

Have you joined the douchequote crowd?

I think Empire needs a musical number or at least a montage.

OH YES. Can it be right after Luke gets his hand cut off?

Also, we need a sex scene between Luke and Leia to really drive home the whole creepy brother/sister act.

Im glad I never got into Star Wars. I havent even seen the last two prequels. I tried to watch the first one and couldnt.

I might rent them just to see how well the Blu Ray Transfer is..the HD versions shown on Spike TV that I catch here and there look pretty decent compared to the VHS version a long time ago..

I'm not saying this is a GOOD thing, but it really doesn't bother me. I barely noticed and I was looking for it.

The "No...NO!" Does kind of annoy me because it takes a rather poignant scene that relies on imagination and takes away all the subtext and need for imagination.

This...Doesn't really look all that problematic.

I just wish we could get the original editions in 5.1 surround. Or 7.1 if that's what Lucas does these days. I know it's not true to the original, but remixing the sound or remastering the picture has never been a problem for me.

I have only ever liked the first two original films; the third was bearable. The prequels were bloody awful; I only watch them for Portman's midriff. I don't see the point of putting the "No! Noooo!" Spoils the scene.

As stupid as the big 'NOOOOO' is, I'm really not all that upset. Mainly because I got the last DVD set, which contained the original theatrical cut of each movie with them. He can go on screwing around with his movies and cramming in more superfluous CGI bullshit to make the scenes cluttered and busy and milking the good will of his fans until the day he dies; I've got my Star Wars just the way I want it, which means I don't have to spend another penny on it, thank you very much.

Upon further consideration, I don't think I will be buying this collection. Not because these changes outrage me enough to do so, but because this is a very familiar pattern, and I feel like an original theatrical version blu ray release is inevitable.

They know what they're doing. They know the fans will bitch and moan. They know they'll buy it anyway. And they know that if they release the original version a few years later, those same fans will shower them with hugs and kisses, and most importantly, money.

So I think I can wait a little while longer for Star Wars on Blu Ray.

As long as Lucas is continually trolling his bread 'n butter, he may as well just:

- dub out any blaster in all 6 movies and make them flashlights and walkie-talkies, a la "E.T."

- remove the Wilhelm Scream from every movie.

- splice in some newly CG'd and re-purposed exposition to invalidate the "independent contractor" argument about the Death Star II from the movie Clerks, and do so using the Han/Jabba scene- only shooping in two stormtroopers instead of Han/Jabba*.

- add the "DO NOT WANT!!!" subtitle to the added dialogue of that Palpatinie/Luke/Vader climax scene, as well as making a documentary on the meme it has become in the inevetable "Special Features" section.

- make every instance of Slave Leia dressed more conservatively. Some space version of a birka or something. Yeah.

- add 23 more minutes of pod racing.

- ... to EVERY MOVIE.

- add "Yakkety Sax" to the score over every embarassing death of every "bad ass" in the series (namely, Darth Maul, Mace Windu, and Boba Fett).

- one more slapdash expositon explaining that Hayden Christiansen didn't REALLY kill all those kids. You know, like the offscreen "he's okay and gonna live" business from the G.I. Joe (cartoon) movie.

*I just now saw that if you say that aloud, it sounds like "Handjob". It wasn't on purpose, but now that I see it, I'm not changing it!

Captain of Fun

Has there been a box set of all the movies released yet on DVD?

I haven't jumped on the Blu-Ray Bandwagon yet (still a DVD guy), but I am a HUUUUUUGE Star Wars fan (even love the prequel movies), but I always put off buying those two trilogy boxsets that were released a few years back because I was waiting/hoping for a box set with all six movies and a billion extras.

Has this happened yet? I only have the original trilogy VHS boxset when they were re-released back in 1997 or whenever it was.

Ah. Just curious.

Comcast sucks. I use half my bandwidth on a typical month, and almost all of it's legal (streaming music, Netflix, gaming). I downloaded like, two PDFs this month that weren't strictly legal, but otherwise....

Its his movie he can do whatever he wants to it, and if he wants to he should. The whole things existed in his imagination before it ever existed on screen, so if he feels that he would like to make changes to it he has ever right to do so. If Da Vinci wanted to go back and paint a mostache on the Mona Lisa he should be able to. If Shakespear wanted to go back and write a wedding scene between Romeo and Juliet he should.

I know you all realize that he has the right to do all of these things because it is his property, just saying it for those of you who don't realize this fact.

Of course that doesn't mean what he's doing makes the films better. But for those of you that get bent out of shape just pretend these additions don't exist.

My little brother is big into Star Wars, and went over all of the changes with. My question to him was why. I mean, I get there's always room for cleaning some things up here and there, but adding CGI modeled characters into the original films, where seemingly everthing in them is tangible, does seem a bit silly, especially since the originals still stand up pretty well, all things considered.

Personally, I don't care one way or the other. If Lucas wants to change them, by all means he has the right to do so, and these are selling no matter what he does to them.
