View Full Version : Diaz vs. Penn - UFC 137 Thread

CSL

UFC President Dana White’s tweet (http://twitter.com/#%21/danawhite) Wednesday afternoon was short and sweet – “U wanted it! U GOT IT!!!”

What the fans wanted was a showdown between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (http://ufc.com/fighter/georges-st-pierre) and the STRIKEFORCE welterweight title holder, Nick Diaz (http://www.strikeforce.com/fighters/men-middleweight/nick-diaz/). So on October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, the UFC 137 Superfight becomes a reality.

Unbeaten since 2007, St-Pierre has taken on and beaten all comers, barely losing a round in the process. Since regaining his title from Matt Serra in 2008, he has turned back the challenges of Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck, and Jake Shields. But this fall, he will face off against the man many believe has the style to dethrone him, Shields’ longtime training partner Diaz.

A proud native of Stockton, California, Diaz, like GSP, has not lost since 2007. Along the way, the UFC vet has defeated Frank Shamrock, Scott Smith, Mach Sakurai, KJ Noons, and Paul Daley, and with his world-class striking skills and jiu-jitsu game improving with each fight, he is on track to shock the world on October 29th.

meh...It sucks to say, but unless you want to marvel at how GSP can systematically nullify then decision his opponent, you're not gonna like the outcome.

I, however, do appreciate a brilliantly executed gameplan. Just not excited for this. GSP needs to move up and get KTFO by AS already.

Diaz & Melendez have signed cross-promotional contracts allowing them to compete in both SF & UFC, Dana White said.

Strikeforce isn't going anywhere anytime soon unless Showtime lets Zuffa buys out the remainder of their tv deal and either way who cares what name is in the middle of the Octagon? They're all fighting under Zuffa contracts now anyways. The only thing I'll miss from SF is Ranallo, Shamrock and Militich on commentary.

I didn't know Melendez got a cross-promotional deal too. 155 is stacked as is.

Wait didn't we already have this at a press confrence? Mayhem came up and was being a dick durring Jake Shield's interview and Nick laid him out with one punch? As for the GSP fight, I want to see it compeditive but Nick isn't a good wrestler and I have a feeling its gonna be another unimpressive match

It's definitely inexcusable on Nick's part. He's blowing (may have blown) a golden opportunity.

I can kind of buy the social anxiety thing though. He always looks uncomfortable in interviews and never makes eye contact with the camera or person interviewing him.

If or when Nick gets his shit together and fights for the UFC they should match him up against Fitch. Penn would be more exciting, but I feel Fitch is more deserving of a match up like that.

I guess GSP would still have Tri Star and Farad Zahabi, but Condit would be S.O.L. wouldn't he?

I agree I do buy the anxiety reason myself. But if it's that big of a problem he HAS to go to Dana and explain that to him. He can't just no show and that's it. Im sure he can just do one on one interviews instead of talking in front of a big crowd if he chooses.

He didn't run from Mayhem Miller. That fight was never going to happen because 1) Miller essentially wanted the fight at 185 which was ridiculous since Diaz was the champ at 170 (even if they did the fight at the supposed catchweight of 183 it still would have been for all intents and purposes a fight at Middleweight since there's 1 pound leeway) and 2) Mayhem Miller was banned from all CBS programming including Showtime anyways.

Scott Coker was just too much of an incompetent fat fucking coward to tell Miller to his face.

Dude went blow for blow with Paul Daley, but he's scared of Mayhem Miller? Come on mane.

I'm not discussing style so much as the notion that anyone who steps in a cage and fights for a living, especially a guy like Nick Diaz who would trade blows with a fighter known for his one punch knock out power like Paul Daley, would be running scared of another fighter.

I'm sure all he had to do was explain it to Dana. I'm sure the UFC would have found a buffer for him (someone to speak and answer questions for him) and all he woud have to do was make the appearence.

It's still a decent card with GSP off it. I wonder what Condit will do now though. If GSP is out for an extended period and Condit still wants to fight before the years out, Fitch should get the opportunity to take him on.

Penn and Diaz become main event. Which is ironic considering White's concerns with Diaz not showing up in the main event to fight GSP.

I thought Fitch was out until December though.

I say throw Koscheck in there to bang with Condit, if Koscheck can even be ready to fight 10 days out.

Next Big Thing
10-18-2011, 09:21 PM
That's the thing. I don't see them finding someone willing to fight Condit on ten days notice so they might take him off the card altogether and if that's the case and GSP would be out for an extended period, putting Fitch in that spot would make sense.

It would be kind of epic though if GSP's injury was minor and they ended up doing Condit/GSP on UFC 140 with Jones/Machida. Doubt it would happen, but would be a pretty good card.

Mr. JL
10-18-2011, 10:18 PM
Apparently, Koscheck is/was lobbying to fight Condit and sending Dana twitters about it.

"gotta respect Kos offering to fight Condit on a week notice. I respect the shit outta u Josh! He's waitin 4 GSP tho" -Dana White (http://twitter.com/#%21/danawhite)

So that answers that I suppose. Word is that it'll be about 4 weeks before he can start training again and maybe another 1-2 months after that before he's ready to go.

Kongo is a viscous striker but I've been really impressed with Mitrione as of late.. If Mir can KO Chieck, the so can Mitrione..

Huge mark for Roy Nelson.. Also, I heard he has lost a good bit of weight and has the best cardio of his career..

His ground game is light years ahead of Cro Cop but of course Mirko ALWAYS has a strikers chance..

Mir choked him out, he didn't KO him. Kongo actually might have the strongest chin/hardest head in sports. Cain Velasquez hit him in the head 250 times in their fight and still couldn't finish him and we all saw what he did after Pat Barry had him on the ropes.

I see Kongo surprising him the same way Big Nog surprised Schaub. Cheick's a huge step up in competition from Christian Morecraft.

I watched the whole press conference. Cro Cop wasn't there and it was pretty boring until Nick showed up. Nick was pretty even keel until the fight was announced. Then he flipped shit.

Honestly, I think Dana secretly loves the guy. He doesn't have to worry about Nick fighting a Jon Fitch or even GSP-esque fight that won't appeal to the mainstream fans and no matter how ridiculous some of these things Diaz says sound, they promote the fight and make him more of a personality.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil and the buzz. If he took getting removed quietly, Dana probably wouldn't have changed the fight, but deep down he knows he'll do better buyrates with Diaz/GSP than Diaz/Condit.

Congrats! @nickdiaz209 Now Holds Record for Most Significant Strikes Landed in a UFC Fight
Two consecutive events have seen the all-time record change hands for most significant strikes landed in a UFC fight. While Nam Phan captured it at UFC 136, Nick Diaz now holds the record, with 178 landed against BJ Penn. Incidentally, Penn now holds the record for most significant strikes landed in a UFC career, capturing that distinction from Chris Lytle.
