Ric Flair is recognized as a 16 time world champion. By my count, Cena is now a 13 time world champ. It doesn't look like HHH is gonna get those last few title runs (but we never know), what are the odds that Cena is gonna be the one to be the new 17+ time world champion?

50/50.

You're welcome.

Nah, he will.

Yeah he will, unless he bows out of wrestling within the next year to do acting or something or has to retire through injury at some point. He's only 34 so he's got around another 6 years or so to pick up 4 more title reigns. Pretty certain it will happen.

Cena's got this, but I really do think Flair will just get more TNA titles to make up for it, which is ridiculous and funny.

I'm surprised Flair hasn't won the TNA title yet.

I was certain Triple H would do it but then he didn't. Then I was certain Edge would do it but then he didn't.

That being said, I am certain Cena will do it.

I remember back in the day when WWF fans were worried about the 5 title curse. Hogan and Bret both left the company after their 5th title reign and people were worried about something happening to Austin and Rock when they got to #5.

We've come a long way, baby.

I think he will. Cena is on 13 and he is far from done with his career. It is only a matter of time. He will be a 20x champion at the very least.

The way they're throwing the belt around lately, probably by the end of 2012.

Provided Cena doesn't get sick or injured like Edge, then it's almost a certainty.

That's what I was thinking, its only Sept and Cena has already been won the title 3 times if I'm not mistaken.

You'll should consider the caliber of talent that Flair had to face during his title runs,Cena may beat Flair in terms of titles won but Cena has faced most of the same people during his title tenure...think about that

I don't think anyone is arguing that Cena is a better champion.

I think at one point WWE/Vince may have respected Flair enough not to have anyone break the 16.

With Flair renegging on his retirement - therefore shitting on the fantastic send-off they gave him - and signing with TNA/further tarnishing his legacy, WWE/Vince have lost that respect.

Therefore, I can only see Cena breaking the 16.

Chavo Classic

What is Flair's current relationship with the WWE? Are they pissed about his move to TNA and his comeback?

My question is really: are they pissed enough at Flair to want to make Cena champ more times just to 1up Flair's achievement?

XL
09-19-2011, 12:16 PM
They probably care very little.

I'm not saying they'd do it to spite Flair, but they wouldn't not do it because of Flair. In the past they may have been reluctant to do it as it's a huge marketing thing for selling Flair, they don't need to do that now, so...

Chavo Classic

I gathered what you were saying, I was suggesting it.

It is amazing how many times Cena has won it, and how many cumulative days he's held it for compared to some of the legends of wrestling.

I feel that Cena hitting the 16 time world champion mark is not the same as Ric Flair because when Flair did it they held the Title for years at a time, where as most of Cena's title wins have been in the past two years .... This is not the same thing in my opinion so in my eyes Flair's record will always be more Prestigious

Cena is going to be a 50 time Champion by the time he retires.

That being said, I am certain Cena will do it.

Neither Edge nor Trips were the faces of the company in an era where title runs are tossed around like used condoms at a porn shoot, though.

Anyway, I was mostly certain about Trips, too. Not gonna lie. I still didn't know if they'd want to touch Flair's legacy, though.

You'll should consider the caliber of talent that Flair had to face during his title runs,Cena may beat Flair in terms of titles won but Cena has faced most of the same people during his title tenure...think about that

Still, the number will be played as significant, which is what we're talking about.

I think at one point WWE/Vince may have respected Flair enough not to have anyone break the 16.

Hoenstly, so do I.

Anyway, I think the only ways Cena doesn't do it are:

-Death/serious injury
-Major wellness violation
-MAJOR change in the fan base.

I don't think any of them are likely, so he's probably going to sixteen...Then twenty....Then thirty....

Even though he is only 9 time champion at this point, I see Randy Orton eventually beating Flair as well. Especially now that he is on his own show and does not have to compete with John Cena.

I would've sworn Triple H would break Flair's record before anyone. Now, I'm not sure if he'll even get there at all.

Blakeamus
09-19-2011, 03:33 PM
My how things have changed in the course of a few years. Back in '08 it seemed a given that Triple H would of achieved breaking Flair's record. Now it's (not suprisingly) Cena who is destined to be that man.

Yeah, I can see SmackDown being a series of Orton versus "Threat of the Moment" where he'll lose the belt (as he has to Christian and now Henry) but win it back at the end of the series for the forseeable future.

Emperor Smeat
09-19-2011, 06:55 PM
He will break it within 1-2 more years especially considering this year alone he won it 3 times and a lot of time left until Mania occurs next year. I doubt Orton will also break Flair's record but he will be very close.

Would winning the TNA title count as a major title though because its usually been just the NWA, WCW, and WWF/E that were seen as counting towards the record. The TNA title is around the same level as the original ECW title and if all titles were counted, then Lawler surpasses Flair by a lot.

Triple has come out and said he didn't want to surpass Flair's number of reigns and I wouldn't be suprised if he ends up holding Cena back so he's just 1 shy of even tying it.

I agree with this. Once upon a time, they might have tried to avoid it; but not now. Cena loses the title when it is convenient to create a stir, and then wins it back because he's the standard-bearer. It's a formula that I don't see changing anytime soon.

Cena is currently at 1046 total days spent as WWE Champion, for the record. Divide this by the ten times he won the title, and you're looking at an average of 104.6 days per reign. This is greater than Stone Cold Steve Austin's average, Triple H's average, and more than double The Rock's. Cena's done statistically worse with the World Heavyweight Title. It brings his average down to about 96 days per reign, but his average is still better than Triple H's believe it or not.

Also, if you combine time spent as WWE Champion and World Heavyweight Champion together, then Cena is just four days off from trying Triple H's time spent as a thirteen-time World Champion with just twelve reigns.

Cena’s latest World Title victory has former WWE Superstar Chavo Guerrero steamed as the third-generation grappler has vowed to stop watching professional wrestling if he breaks Naitch’s legendary record.

He stated Monday night on Twitter, “If Cena brakes the great Ric Flair’s 16 time champ record, I will never watch wrestling again. I call a boycott of Cena matches if he does!”

Guerrero also asked his Twitter followers, “How many of u are tired of John Cena being champion? Don’t get all excited, it’s just a question.” He wrote moments later, “Wow…it’s an overwhelming “tired of Cena” response! It’s not me, it’s all the fans. I could literally retweet hundreds of tired responses!”

Guerrero continued, “Now, my opinion…Cena is better than me on the mike, but I could out wrestle Cena with my eyes closed and 1 hand tied behind my back! Truth!

“Some are saying that Cena is a great athlete. Really? C’mon. Are u blind? I know Cena & I could beat him in any sport except weight lifting!
“Golf, basketball, bowling, a race, tennis, horseshoes, hitting a baseball pitch, catching a football…anything!!!!
“Lol…some1 just said Cena is a better athlete than Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior! Lol are u retarded? No offense to a challenge person.”

Damn, he's held the title the most times at 10 times. Triple H is the closest second, at 8.

He's also fourth in the list of combined days, at 1048. Backlund is at 2138, Hogan at 2185 and Bruno at 4040.

I don't think he'll break Backlund's record, because it's over 1000 days away. But if he breaks Backlund's, he'll definitely beat Hogan's.

Chavo is really showing himself up lately.

I find the notion of having certain things "untouchable" in a medium that is supposed to mimic real sport/competition kinda ridiculous. Flair set a standard of 16 World Title wins...and what? This should never be duplicated or beaten? Why? Out of respect for a man that shows little respect of himself/his legacy?

Records are broken I'm sport all the time. Wrestling has to move forward, break "new ground", etc. Flair's record is there to be broken. Would Chavo be up I'm arms if Eddie was closing in on the 16? Or Punk? Or any other wrestler perceived as "great"?

Cena is the WWE's go to guy, I couldn't care less if he beats Flair's record.

Kurt Angle is an 11 Time Champion (5 TNA/4 WWE/1 WHC/ 1 WCW) I figure he'll break Ric Flair's record too.

Mr. Nerfect
09-28-2011, 06:55 AM
I don't think Angle will. He'll probably lose the title to Robert Roode, give Roode a handshake and then may not ever win another one again. Even if he returns to the WWE, I think that they'll keep the position of top guy away from him (for health reasons, more than anything).

Cena and Orton both have realistic chances. Orton will probably be heading into WrestleMania the World Heavyweight Champion, so he'll be a ten-time World Champion by the time he is 32.

Why are they now seperating the title reigns saying Cena is a 10-time WWE Champion? I guess Triple H doesn't want Cena to break Flair's record or at least appear to not.

I wish they had done that from the start. It makes each title seem more important to me if winning each other has some sort of value individually. It always bugged me when someone would come out and say that they had won the WWE Title before when they had been World Heavyweight Champion before. One title was held by Bruno Sammartino and Stone Cold Steve Austin; the other wasn't (although the actual belt could lay claim to more prestige).
