except epic can't mean anything people want it to, since it has, y'know, a definition. should've gone with a made-up word. otherwise, how are you accumulating anything other than a list of people's favourite songs, period? if epic doesn't mean the same thing to you as it does to me, then we're not really achieving anything here, are we?

I love M83, but We Own the Sky.. Epic? Hmmm, I guess it is what you think that word means to you.

For me an epic song has to last a fair whack (5/6mins + ) and have to build into something magnificent. Everything going on sorta thing.

Something like:

I really just needed an obligatory M83 song, but I posted that before Hurry Up came out (and 70% of that album is the most epic of all time)

A Guitar And A Heart, Coloring The Void and By The Kiss could all be short M83 epics I guess.

I like this new album, but their last 4 beat it for me. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is probably on par with Digital Shades Vol.1 or maybe slightly better. I've listened to them for so long, I know when I like an M83 straight off, others grow on me. Every M83 song has had it's chance to grow, so I'd prob say It's (for me) their 4th best album. Beating Digital Shades and M83 in hindsight.

With one exception, the versions of O Fortuna I have are all under four minutes. Does that mean it is not epic?

You could argue that's "grand" not epic. It's what people think it means I guess Dr Knight. I mean, I use the word "epic" for things that in reality aren't. But that's the modern world.

The majority of classical music is epic in the natural musical sense of the word I suppose. But the 5/6 min thing? well, as I listed above, those M83 songs aren't above 5 mins.

Kane Knight

Most classical music is not, realistically, "epic." The O Fortunas and Beethoven's Fifths tend to actually be few and far between, actually.

There really is no "natural musical sense," so I'm assuming that just means "whatever I want it to mean" as well.

But that's cool if you want it to be that way. I just think it's silly to preclude something like O Fortuna as "epic" due to the length. I guess that's part of my definition. So I asked a question.

FakeLaser
01-14-2012, 10:39 PM
I guess it depends on yr definition of "epic" and a typical characteristic of other "epic" art forms are that they are lengthy; namely poetry ("The Epics.")

Not that I necessarily agree that it's a necessary component in "genre-tizing" or characterizing a song. The M83 song I posted, for instance, is under 3 minutes, but is definitely "epic-sounding." I guess because it conjures up "epic" imagery.

It depends on the person too for what images it conjours up. My mate loves Drake and Biggy, he keeps saying this and that about when he listens to music, I just don't get that though.

From what I've known growing up and seeing amongst elders and the media, generally epic is something that builds up and has shed loads going on. Orchestras, perhaps mazy guitars too in certain ways....

Most people who I know who like black metal describe it as epic metal to people who've perhaps head of Motorhead or something. I've heard one friend say Black metal is epic as it incorporates classical music at times, so obviously for him classical music is considered epic. As a child growing up and listen to a lot of classical music (which is totally out of the ordinary for where I grew up), I have to admit too that for me classical music = epic music most of the time.

James Diesel
