View Full Version : Should Cena ditch this theme to go with a new look

Because he looks a lot less like a douchebag lately. He's been using the camo, which looks a lot better. We've seen The Rock is these camo shorts also during a photo shoot (at least, I have, because I have the gays for old Rocky) but Cena says that it's to "pay homage to the troops." Can't really say he's lying either, you know, whole saluting thing. Wonder if a new theme would wash more of the bullshit off of him.
The fact that you'll never "catch him in the next man's sweater" has stood the test of time, so I think more bold claims are long overdue. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand Cena rap, but I have to believe he can do better than what he has right now. It's a good time for Cena to regroup, because with people being so sick of Cena and wanting The Rock back for a while now, his flaws may be more glaring.
Ditching the jorts and the orange armbands was a huge fucking step in itself.

Cena's schtick works for the demographic he is targeting, which is not the IWC.

Oh, it's because I'm posting on the internet that his theme is shitty. Gotcha! Not trying to be a dick, but do you not hear a huge amount of booing when it hits?

I get that Cena appeals to children and all, but if he had a new theme, they'd probably be buying it on iTunes or something. That can't be bad, right?

The theme issue is two sided. On one hand, it's old. On the other hand, it's identifiable his. They're going to be hard pressed to find a theme that is decent, that is so identifiable with Cena. At best, they could have him record another "rap" and have the back beat mixed with some sort of military drums/marches, etc.
Like, obviously not this, but something like this with Cena rapping could work well.

The kids will cheer for Cena ragardless of what his theme is, so why not change it so they'd get some extra money out of it?

It's weird when you consider how often wrestlers used to change their themes. Then again, they only seemed to do that to sell WWE the Music CDs, and those have really been diminishing in popularity anyway.

Which explains why when someone changes there theme(AJ,Eve,Air Boom recently did and it seems Usos have too) that they release them via iTunes store.
But they sell individual themes on iTunes. Don't know how successful they are, but I'm honestly surprised they haven't made a new one to sell for Cena. Cena doesn't even have a "secondary" theme, like Triple H's King of Kings.
Same reason I'm surprised that he hasn't gotten another custom WWE title ala the Spinner. They would sell a shit load by default.

Should seriously be his theme if he ever goes heel.

The notion of Cena turning heel has always been on my mind from time to time, but I would always resign my ideas when considering how much of a cash cow he is for the WWE as their super face. However, there have been several events as of late that have piqued my interest and made me take a renewed shine to the possibility of Cena actually becoming heel:
1) The recent upswing in CM Punk's popularity. If the reason behind the head offices refusal to turn Cena heel is the lost of their top face, not only has Punk already filled those shoes, but he's lined them with pipe bombs and exploded the company's revenue. Him becoming the company's new top face in the near future is almost inevitability.
2) As Rock Bottom mentioned in his original post, Cena's new attire is certainly a change from the norm. Minor as it may be (especially when considering that an explanation for it could simple be that the WWE had ran out of colors for him to wear) It just seems to give him an edge in his persona that I had not seen in awhile.
Now, as to the subject of his theme, I agree that a change needs to occur. Not only has he had his present theme for a god awful long time, but a new theme would give him a fresh flare and really bring his new look together. As to what that theme should be? My pick is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1hIphLhx_w (http://youtu.be/utzkChbCDbk)
If I'm not mistaken, I believe Cena has already hinted that this would his new theme come wrestlemania, and I think it would fit a heel persona.
(Also, I apologize for not embedding. I'm honestly not sure how too...)
Cena's theme shouldn't change. It'd be like taking "Real American" away from Hulk Hogan, or the glass shatter away from Stone Cold. The sound of the bass and drums hitting before Cena comes out is his signature and it's what gets him his huge pops/heat. Nothing they could come up with could deliver the same thing. It's as much a part of Cena as anything else.
This theme would kick ass

Not the best examples you could have cited. Themes change, sometimes a little, sometimes completely. It sounds weird at first, the fans get used to it, they learn to pop for it and they buy the CD/iTunes single. It'd even momentarily boost his crowd reaction, since the people who are used to booing his current intro would be surprised into silence or maybe even popping for him.

Fragile X, dude, that theme was immense.
LOLWUT
I don't think my point was super unclear.
When the glass shatters, you know it's Austin, and like some kind of pro wrestling Pavlov experiment, it gets the people jacked as soon as they hear that happen. The same goes for the first few hits of Hulk Hogan's "Real American", The Rock's "If ya smellllll" and many others.
Cena's drum roll into the stupid "YABADOOO!" thing is his music trademark, and it gets the people jacked up. It's the starting point for his heat versus pop reaction that he always gets.
Can someone post a recent John Cena pic?
I have no idea how he looks these days. Last I remember he was Barney.

Kane Knight is so Internet.
Personally, I've wondered this question myself lately, but I have a feeling that the WWE is holding off on a Cena theme change for a big occasion. It wouldn't surprise me to hear him come out to something completely new at WrestleMania.
Also, I personally believe we could be getting closer to the age where Cena turns heel. It would no doubt cause a huge stir and could generate cash of its own. The WWE just needs other guys that can pick up the slack with merchandise sales and all that crap. CM Punk seems to be arriving as a top babyface in the WWE. You also have Sheamus coming up, and Sin Cara is moving a fair bit of merchandise. Hell, even Zack Ryder is there.
Cena turning heel and holding the WWE Championship by the throat would be an immense storyline that could carry the company well through 2012.

I'm done crying about a Cena heel turn because John Cena said that faces and heels were archaic concepts in wrestling. He took a shot at internet nerds like us in that promo when he was trying to ride Punk's thunder with the whole "shoot" thing, remember? He really showed us. We must be incredibly stupid to think that over half the crowd booing you on a nightly basis is grounds for such an outdated thing. It's so '80s.
I also like how he claims to do everything out of love for the fans, and then revises his statement so that it favors less than half the fans.
Long story shirt, it is unavoidable for him to get buried by Rock unless he does turn heel. If that's such a stupid idea, the only thing left to witness is Cena getting buried. I'm not opposed to either.

The "post face/heel dynamic" isn't a new line, and I'm pretty sure WWE's been using it since before Punk was a name.

Actually, I could see Cena spending his entire time in the WWE as a babyface. A tried and true babyface. One of those guys that just doesn't turn, even though there is money in it.
