As expected, Chael Sonnen will be the next fighter to challenge for UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva's title.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the plans on Wednesday's edition of "The Jim Rome Show."

However, no date has been selected for the long-awaited rematch because Silva currently is recovering from a shoulder injury.

"It's the fight everyone wants to see," White said. "People want to see Chael vs. Anderson. Anderson is in this position where he feels this guy is so disrespectful he doesn't want to give him a shot and everything else, but Anderson will end up fighting Chael Sonnen."

Although Silva vs. Sonnen II was always the plan, fellow contender Mark Munoz's recent shellacking of Chris Leben in this past weekend's UFC 138 main event may have cast some doubt on it. Munoz, who's now 6-1 over his past seven fights, immediately campaigned for a title shot after the second-round TKO.

After the event, though, White made it sound unlikely that Munoz would get to cut in line.

Of course, Sonnen did some campaigning of his own recently. After submitting Brian Stann at UFC 136, Sonnen made the champ a boastful proposition (though he later said the offer is off the table).

"Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck," Sonnen said at the Oct. 8 event. "Super Bowl weekend, the biggest rematch in the history of the business. I'm calling you out Silva, but we're upping the stakes.

"I beat you, (and) you leave the division. You beat me, and I will leave the UFC forever."

Sonnen isn't willing to fulfill those terms now, but he clearly got under the skin of Team Silva.

Silva (29-4 MMA, 14-0 UFC) and Sonnen (26-11-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC) first met 14 months ago at UFC 117 and delivered a fight for the ages. Sonnen dominated the action for four rounds before getting caught in a triangle choke midway through the fifth and final round. The pair was scheduled to meet again early this year, but the immediate rematch was nixed when the California State Athletic Commission suspended Sonnen for elevated levels of testosterone.

Currently, Silva is recovering from bursitis in his shoulder. Although the UFC returns to his native Brazil on Jan. 14 for UFC 142, even UFC 143 on Super Bowl weekend (Feb. 4) would be a quick turnaround after the champ's recovery and a full training camp

Can you imagine if this was boxing? It would take at least 5 years for this fight to happen.

Anderson is without a doubt my favorite fighter and the G.O.A.T., but I really got annoyed hearing him and his manager say Chael should have to go to the back of the line and all this other stuff. That's the type of crap that killed boxing.

I'm still intrigued by Sonnen/Munoz, but this is the fight they definitely had to make at the end of the day.

Disappointed that they wont allow the WWE stipulations "I lose and I retire"

Michael Landsberg is a pompous douche a lot of the time, but Chael Sonnen is fucking ridiculous. Like if you're going to play the larger than life asshole, at least try not to look retarded while doing it.

haha ..Landsberg was asking dumb questions towards the end. But Chael went overboard since the beginning for no reason, kinda felt bad for Landsberg

Michael Landsberg looks sickly these days.

Like Funky said, Chael Sonnen just looked like a RE-tard.

Munoz vs. Sonnen now.

Jan 28, on the second Fox show.

Sanchez/Ellenberger is the support.

Makes sense. Anderson is supposed to be out till June. If Chael knocks off Munoz convincingly it's going to add even more fuel to the fire, especially if he calls out the champ live on Fox Sonnen-Style.

So is it a one fight event again? -_-

Rofl Sonnen bashing that ring hoe that posed in playboy now.

Yeah, he gives Arianny Celeste shit at every UFC Q&A he does too. It's kind of funny, but kind of uncalled for. It's not that hard or impressive to pick on birds that carry ring cards around for a living.

I miss the Taint Whisperer.

He actually took one of his funnier tweets about her down. I guess Dana or Lorenzo didn't appreciate him talking bad about their mistress and put him in his place.

Funny he only picks on Arianny though..must be something he knows about her

He's a brilliant self promoter and knows picking on her will get him more attention than picking on Chandella.

I don't know... if he said the kind of shit he says about Brazilians all the time about a black woman in America, he'd end up drawing more than a little seriously bad press for himself and the UFC as a borderline racist. Watch how fast his contract would be terminated.

Bloody Elbow says Sonnen is now facing the winner of Mayhem/Bisping instead.

Dunno how reputable Bloody Elbow is, mind.

He knows that. That's probably why he said Chandella was the only legitimate ring girl the UFC had instead of making fun of her too. The guy chooses his words well when he's trying to start shit and he knows who to pick on.

He's talked shit about Brazilians, Japanese fighters, Bisping, Miller and Cro Cop. He kept his mouth shut when he squared off against Captain America Bryan Stann, praises Jon Jones regularly and called Rashad Evans a future hall of famer. He picks his battles well.

Silva is out til June which means Sonnen can still meet him then and possibly in Brazil.

It's an interesting call. I don't think Chael or the UFC want him having 8 months between fights, especially when he was out a year before his last one. At the same time, you definitely want to preserve Silva/Sonnen in Brazil and it might make more sense to have Munoz face the winner of Bisping/Miller and have the winner of that fight face the winner of Silva/Sonnen in the fall. It's not like 185 is that deep in talent anyways.

This is why Bloody Elbow, SB Nation and these other half ass sites blow. The official card is Evans vs. Davis in the main event and Sonnen vs. Munoz on the undercard. Pretty sick combo.

Dana also said he's working on a third "headliner" fight for that.
