View Full Version : Let's talk about Kevin Nash

I find every "smart" fan at one point or another loves to talk shit about Big Sexy. I was one of those smart fans... then I looked back at my childhood, rewatched some stuff and I've changed my tune. Honestly, if you look back at the guys career, he is and was the effing man.

We'll discount his early WCW days because he was just getting his feet wet. But when he started as Diesel, I would say he was an awesome performer. It helped that he had Shawn Michaels as his homeboy, and Scott Hall and Bret Hart to work with initially but let's get serious... during that initial wicked badass heel run as Diesel, Nash was the man. His mannerisms were wicked in the ring, he was actually extremely mobile for a man his size (before the knees started acting up) and he had a general understanding of psychology from working with Michaels. Watch the tag match between the 2 dudes with attitude vs. Jannetty and Ramon, and you'll see what I'm saying. It's not like he blows the roof off the place with his work rate, but he knows how to perform and work the audience.

The reason he got the title was because of how well he was performing. His impending run was shit, because Vince stopped booking him as a badass, and made him Mr. Vanilla babyface, which doesn't work with a man his size. I saw Nash talk about this, and the man had a point. Who's going to take a champ of Nash's size seriously when he's pretty much selling for Damien Demento? It just doesn't work. Then obviously he changes back to the badass after the Hart match which was fucking phenomenal IMO, and it's not like Nash had nothing to do with it. if he was as hopeless as everyone tries to paint him, he woulda held back Hart, and he didn't. He understood what he should be doing in that match and played his part perfectly, and executed what was then his little tweener turn beautifully.

Then the rest of is WWF run was sick. He got over again as a nasty heel like he started as. Great matches with HBK and Taker and performing well all over the map. Had no problem putting guys who had earned it over in these days.

And then there was the nWo and at that point Nash didn't have to really be a good worker but just perform. He was all about making his own money at this point and by god he did a good job of it. The first 18 months of the nWo was flawless. After that he started getting old, and has only popped up when there have been chances to make money. I like him. Not always the best to watch, and sometimes he tries a little too hard to be cool but he's always got quite a presence about him, and I think he is hard done by. He is a definite representative of what my age group likes as a performer. Sex, Drugs and rock and roll, and he didn't take shit from anyone. A little selfish? sure. But in his position, I don't know if i'd want to have put Rey Misterio and Chris Jericho over myself.

And I have to admit, I get a kick seeing him back in the WWE. His angle is kind of dumb, but who between the ages of 23-30 is gonna say they don't mark out a little bit when they see the Jackknife, or hear him come out to the nWo theme?

So.... if you disagree, say your piece. If you agree, say your piece. WAR NASH

This angle is a bit weird, I agree.

I do also hope for a face-run Diesel style. Although that seems like it may never happen.

Love Nash. I rolled my eyes when Santino came out on Raw last night, but as soon as I heard the NWO theme it turned the entire segment around for me.

Jimmy hart is with the WWE at the moment isn't he?

or is it teasing an nWo return?

It's funny, I have a buddy who's not a HUGE pro wrestling fan, but he understands somewhat the art form of the product and he often refers to Kevin Nash. lol I always joke about how Nash couldn't work and my buddy always makes the good point of "That's not what Nash was about" and it's true. It's funny that he can note this, and he's not a "smart" fan by any means. It's almost better that way, because he just has a purer understanding of psychology, without knowing what happens backstage.

Nash kind of reminds me of Paulie from Goodfellas, "Paulie moved slow, but that's cuz Paulie didn't have to move for anybody". He also seems like a guy you can have a brew or two with.

Kevin Nash can still go. And, at times, last night when he was doing his promo with Santino, he did remind me of his WCW days.

WWE should give him a big push. Today's fans will certainly learn to like (or hate) Kevin Nash.

Nash was at his best (and I use that term loosely) as Diesel. Personally, I've never really been a fan of big guys. Andre the Giant, sure, but most of the others never intrigued me. Also, not a fan of guys who get over solely on charisma.

So yeah, can't say I ever really appreciated Nash's in-ring or on-air stuff. He'd be an excellent backstage person, a mentor, because he does get a lot of things... psychology for one, and he generally has a very sound outlook on the business. I see a wealth of knowledge, and kudos for that.

I just don't want him on my TV.

There is just about every reason why Nash is someone I shouldn't like but I'm really glad to see him back in the WWE. There is just something naturally entertaining about the guy and I'm really intrigued to see where they go with the angle between him and HHH - later on surely leading to something with Punk.

They killed a lot of the Mojo with the music-less entrances earlier.

and the nWo music doesn't really fit because he's not selling this program in that style.

All they need is that Diesel engine start up and the crowd will respond.

Well...when you think about what things a wrestler really needs to be a legit top guy, Kevin Nash had all those things. He has the look, he has the charisma, the mic skills, good character, and while his matches have never been particularly fast paced, they served their purpose well.

Can't help but notice that somewhere between TNA and his WWE return, his mic skills took a bit of a dive.

I don't think that's accurate. I think it's just that WWE hasn't let Nash be Nash. If they let him go out there and do his thing, it will flow like it always has.

He did have a lackluster title reign in the WWF and wasn't that great in the ring but easily made up for it with great promo skills and charisma especially in WCW.

The Jacknife is still one of my favorite finishers and tied with the Awesome Bomb for best version of the powerbomb.

I liked him the most during his Outsiders and nWo Wolf-Pac phase but didn't care much for his time in TNA besides the time he pulled out the upside down chart showing he was the highest money making champion ever in WWF history.

Big D will always be a favorite of mine and I will always worry about his brittle legs. However if Trips plays the match smart and in his preperation studies attacks centered around knees and hammies, I think we could see the Bitter Giant fall prey to The Game. Nash in his preperation should watch older matches of Triple H especially those with The Dead Man because of the size similarity, if he studies well and wraps his knees tight I'd say we could have a surprise victory on our hands.

If I were big Kev I'd stop by the trainer room before my match to ensure the best wrapping one can get, for a match with the COO.
