View Full Version : Before or After: The Rock
TheChamp

After 7...long.....days. FINALLY, THE CHAMP HAS COME BACK TO TPWW!!! This week, we will discuss the most electrifying man in all of entertainment: The Rock. Kinda tough to pick a dividing point on this one because of all those trips to Hollywood near the end of his wrestling days, but I think I got one. Was "Dwaaaaaaaynnnnne" (in my CM Punk voice) better before or after he left the Corporation (which was about mid-1999, I think)?

After, defo in the year 2000 when WWE was watchable.

I'll say before. Watching him become "The Rock" was more fun than him actually BEING "The Rock", if that makes sense. One of my favorite Rocky moments was when he was starting to take over the NOD. He gave everyone expensive gifts, except for Faarooq, who he gave an autographed photo of himself.
Also, I feel like the Steve Austin eulogy was before the Corporation too. Might be wrong about that, but it was awesome.

The Austin eulogy angle happened mid-April when he was still with the Corporation. He left after Backlash at the end of the month.

He was his best when he had his long sideburns. Period, end of discussion, close thread

I'd have to say Before
I really enjoyed his run in 1998 and 1999

Tough choice since the before period includes the amazing IC title feud with Austin and his feud with Mankind during his Corporation days while his after period includes the Rock-n-Sock connection, Hogan vs Rock at WM 18, and Hollywood Rock.
I went with after because it included a lot more memorable moments and feuds such as his verbal war with Jericho during his debut and 2 of the 3 Mania matches he had with Stone Cold.

After.
His heel run in early 2003 was possibly the best work I have ever seen. Plus his theme music was amazing then.

To be a motherfucker, I'm going with during.
He was so awesome during this total transition. Corporate Champion to People's Champion. Both have so many ups and so little negativity.
On a side note...

This doesn't seem like a real picture... like I find it so weird that The Rock is actually wrestling again. Hasn't really sunk in until then. Maybe I'm just a huge Attitude Era mark... but its so weird looking at this picture and going
"one of these things is not like the other"

His 2003 heel "Hollywood Rock" was the best gimmick EVER.

If you read what you wrote, and then look at The Rock's face in this picture, it's almost like he's going "What the hell am I doing here? This doesn't look right"

Going to say before. Rock is much more fun as a heel but his best heel character was Hollywood Rock, just a shame it didn't last too long.

As I'm a huge Rock mark, I've gotta say this is a tough question for me to answer and I'm honestly not sure that I can pick. Every year IMO, either as a face or a heel, he's had a great feud, program or storyline with someone that wasn't solely great just because of who he was working with.
I loved his work with the NOD and his IC title feud with Austin from 97-98, his feuds with Mankind and Austin from 98-99, his feuds with Big Show and HHH from early through summer 2000, and his work with Austin in 2001 for WM17. Also, loved his feud with Hogan for WM18 in 2002 and his awesome Hollywood heel run in 2003.
Was everything he did great all the time without any room for improvement? No, of course not, but he always seems to bring that extra something (charisma, electricity, excitement, whatever) to a feud, that very few other guys, if any, can.

I honestly cant pick, WAY too many great moments to choose from.
I will just say that I have always enjoyed the smell of his cooking....

This is what he asked. He didn't ask "Is The Rock better now or before?"
He asked if The Rock was better before he left the Corporation or after.
before<>after if that makes sense.
How bout a "="?

I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw this guy, I hated him. I hated how he looked, and I hated all the hype that was built around him.
And I was sure he would not amount to anything.

Before. Way better in 1997 and 1998. Don't like him as a face nearly as much.

After. He was a lot more evolved. And his Hollywood Rock was amazing. But "vintage" Rock was the shit as well, with Austin and a lot of the other guys breaking new ground.

But the Stone Cold memorial thing was classic

Can't pick just one or the other. Going with his entire career. Can't lose. And no offense to TheChamp or C.M. Punk, but I do believe a certain someone else has a legitimate claim to being the best in the world

Probably should have clarified but I meant of guys who were active within WWE.

Jericho's work with Rock was extremely entertaining in the debut. Both guys played it really well. I also liked the Jericho/Rock WWE vs. Alliance angle, and the undisputed title scene. Couldn't go wrong with Rock and Jericho. They compliment each other really well, which shouldn't be overshadowed by Rock/Austin feuds.
