View Full Version : Your album of the year?
El Vaquero de Infierno

We are coming to the end of the year and it is doubtful that any album of substance is going to be released until after the New Year, unless you think the new Chevelle record coming out in a couple of weeks is going to be a classic.
So it is now time to choose your album of the year. You may want to elaborate on why it is your album of the year if you wish and maybe bestow upon us an example of why it has kicked your arse.
Out of the 80+ albums that I have bought this year, only 9 were actually released this year, and then only 2 really stood out to me. They were: Kuniko Kato's Plays Reich and the Yo-Yo Ma/Stuart Duncan/Edgar Meyer/Chris Thile collaborative album, The Goat Rodeo Sessions.
For me the latter won out; it grabbed me from the opening refrain and didn't let go until the end. Top notch musicians at their best.

Try and keep the "honourable mentions" to a minimum; I know that some of you are incapable of making a decision.

Era Extrana by Neon Indian was amazing, Reptilians by Starfucker blew my mind... but for me, so far it's been: Hurry Up, We're Dreaming by M83.
To break down, my top 5 would be:
1) M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
2) Starfucker - Reptilians
3) Neon Indian - Era Extrana
4) Friendly Fires - Pala
5) Sophie Ellis Bexter - Make a Scene
Going to see M83 in January too, my first gig in ages.

First one to come to mind is Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising, so I'll have to go with it.

Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events.
Would have to say Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning is a very very close second though.
Occupying 3,4,5 would probably be
Neal Morse - Testimony 2
The Anabasis - Back From Being Gone
Stratovarius - Elysium

I don't think I've even listened to 50 new albums this year, let alone 50 good ones. I'm getting too off the ball. :(
I need some time to think about mine.

M83 is creeping its way up my list after listening to it 293 times driving through epic mountain passes and snowy forests / snowboarding down said mountain at 50 mph
Noticing a lot more themes that run current throughout the album (musical, not lyrical..no idea what he is saying really)...the interludes actually do what interludes are supposed to do, which is rare in most albums "nowadays". It actually works as a double album, with each taking on its own personality. Damn, yeah. Like it a lot.

I don't think I can think of an album that came out this year that I 'loved'. I probably didn't pay enough attention to a lot of stuff that came out and there was barely any bands that I really like who put out stuff that caught my ear.
