In my opinion they are leading a rock revolution, bringing it back from the depths of Stapp and Nickelback and all that garbage that is constantly played on the radio.

I can see it not being everyone cup of tea though. What's one of your favorite bands right now Blitz? Current bands I mean.

Blitz

They're not. They're doing the same thing the White Stripes and The Hives and The Strokes and myriad upon myriad other bands have done or are doing. They're taking old genres of music and updating it slightly for today. That is all.

Mind you, I don't hate the Black Keys. The few singles I've heard have been alright. And they're definitely making some of the best music videos today. But I just don't think they're the rock god revolutionaries everyone seems to think they are.

Favourite band shall always be Brand New.

One of my favorite bands.

Really like Brand New. Few bands have shown me the versatility that they have, maybe ever.

I see what you're saying. I don't necessarily agree with all of it, but it's certainly an update on an existing genre. That's what all music is though, so I tend to not see that as a credible argument against. It's blues that at least was dirty and grimy and awesome that has developed into popular or 'pop' rock. Howlin for You is essentially a stadium rock song, for example. That all said, it's more innovative than anything most of the popular rock bands of today are putting out.

I like them a lot, and have been listening to them since I heard 10 A.M. automatic in high school, but I don't see the genius that some others do...Also have to take DangerMouse (who, IMO, is a musical genius) into account for this new album. He's maybe the most hands on producer in the business, so any progression has to be, at least somewhat, attributed to his collaboration with the group.

Again, I'm really psyched to hear this album. I love DangerMouse and am really curious to see what he does with the Black Keys' sound, since I really do like them. Word.

I do agree that this album is going to be huge. They attracted a particular crowd with Brothers that got people to check out the rest of their music. It was kind of a mild album compared to the rest of their stuff. Then this comes out and blends the two sounds together in quite simply put, -exactly- what I wanted to hear out of their next album. It's got the modern polish of Brothers with some really heavy drum and bass beats, and the gritty raw guitar riffs I came to love from their older material.

Listened to this twice today. Pretty OK. Little Black Submarines is great, and the rest is pretty much what I expected from a Black Keys/DangerMouse collab (solid, catchy blues rock with a sped up tempo)

7.6/10

I'm listening to this now.

It's ok. I mean, it's tight, it sounds good, and it's exactly what I thought it would be. But it's just not something I'm going out of my way to listen to. Like I'm 7 tracks in and I can say that what I've heard is GOOD music. But I'm kinda bored and want to shut it off. Not my thing, I guess.

Thee Oh Sees do this way better, IMO

FakeLaser
12-04-2011, 01:44 PM
Kinda hard to compare the two actually because the vocal style is so much different, but yeah.

Requiem
12-04-2011, 02:43 PM
Overall I would rate this a 9/10 after further listening (from my initial 10/10). I wish there was just 'more' to it. The several songs on it that are on, are fucking on. Yet again, they've managed to change up their style just slightly. Nothing major, but it's an obvious change from the last works. Couple songs that are just kinda 'meh' after a few listens, but I'm absolutely in love with about 5-6 songs on this.

Wish there was a bit more depth to it ala Brothers, or more tracks with more variance to the style. The CD starts off incredibly, and then tapers off. Just doesn't stay solid all the way through like previous albums. However, my high rating has more to do with just how awesome the -good- songs actually are. When they're on, they're fucking on.

After checking out about 10 Thee Oh Sees songs, I'm kind of baffled that you think they are better than The Black Keys, or that you got bored with TBK over TOS. No offense intended, but that was terrible and doesn't even compare to the caliber of TBK. Thee Oh Sees seemed incredibly pretentious and just wasn't appealing at all to any of my senses. Inaudible lyrics put to a grungy and non-catchy guitar riff that always acts like it's going to deliver at some point in the song, but never does. Or attempts to deliver and just sounds like screeching with a complete lack of melody. It had no soul at all. Completely soulless music that did not convey whatever emotion or meaning they were trying to get across.

Come on, really? You think that is better than The Black Keys?

I think their music is far more interesting than The Black Keys, who strike me as good musicians, but are kind of boring. I don't see how their music is soulless because it's not blues-y like the Black Keys.

I did go on to say it's kind of apples and oranges. Their similarity kind of ends at both being garage rock bands. The Black Keys definitely have a more accessible sound, but their songs all start to kinda sound the same to me. Again, I think they're GOOD, but there's nothing that grabs me.

FakeLaser

Obviously, The Black Keys are one of your favorite bands, so you're not going to agree with me. But that's how music is. It's completely subjective.

FakeLaser

Listening to the album Castlemania now and wondering how this can be described as soulless.

This is more psychedelic leaning than The Black Keys who are more blues leaning. What can I say? I've always tended towards more psychedelic sounding music.

Requiem
12-04-2011, 03:11 PM
I agree that it's apples and oranges, but I can't believe you would say TBK are boring and then cite Thee Oh Sees as someone better. That was the definition of boring and sounding the same.

I didn't say it was soulless because it isn't bluesy. It's soulless because it has no soul. It is too utterly simplistic and the vocal style that I heard doesn't allow for any emotion to be conveyed to the listener. There was nothing interesting to me about that at all. Not only that, but the pure musical talent by itself doesn't even seem to come close to the abilities of TBK. Something doesn't have to be accessible to everyone to have a catchy riff, but nothing about anything I listened to was remotely catchy. Don't really think it's fair to have even brought up that comparison in the first place when they are obviously going for very different things. (referring to your "Thee Oh Sees does this better" statement)

Does what better? Rock? Because that would just be a flat out disgraceful comment.

Requiem

Obviously, The Black Keys are one of your favorite bands, so you're not going to agree with me. But that's how music is. It's completely subjective.

Exactly. Which is why I don't get why you would even bring something up like "So and so does this better" and expect any type of different response when the music you bring up is obviously in your realm of what you think is good. You're essentially doing the exact same thing.

Obviously I'm not going to convince you that Thee Oh Sees isn't good. But in the context of this discussion, you're essentially making someone defend their tastes when you say something like that.

FakeLaser
12-04-2011, 03:25 PM
I think they are a better garage rock band. That is my point. Perhaps it was a bit much to compare the two, admittedly. However, they're both garage rock bands so they are comparable to some degree.

And it's not a disgraceful comment at all. The Black Keys aren't a band of genius musician demi-gods or anything. They're good musicians, and they make good music very much in the vein of other garage-rock revivalists that were so popular in the early part of the millennium (The Strokes, White Stripes, etc.) I readily acknowledge their ability as musicians, and hope this album brings them even more success, because we need good bands in the mainstream. But it's not like they're Pink Fucking Floyd or something.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dj1hjMI7rhY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I don't get what you mean by soulful at all. There is emotion. The music is fun and whimsical. It's uplifting. I wouldn't say it's simplistic either... there's quite a lot going on with reverb and distortion there which creates a sound all its own and an aesthetic of chaos along with the manic vocals. It's a DIFFERENT emotion than the Black Keys evoke, which again is more BLUESEY and straightforward rock.

I'm not in any way implying that Thee Oh Sees are genius musicians. I think that they are a good, energetic band who make interesting music and also put on an energetic live show. I prefer them to The Black Keys. Their music speaks to me more, whereas most of The Black Keys output to me is good, but kinda forgettable.

FakeLaser
12-04-2011, 03:30 PM

I was stating my opinion that I feel that Thee Oh Sees are better. I even ended the post with "IMO."

I don't mind you responding. I encourage a response. I want to debate. I like to talk about music. That's why we're here. That's why there's a music forum. To discuss music, compare bands, rate albums, etc. It's fun.

And I'm not here to convince you of anything, I'm here to explain why I feel the way that I do, and question why you feel a certain way, which is precisely what you did with your initial Thee Oh Sees post. I like that. I like that I posted about them and you were like hey, I'll give them a listen to see what he's talking about. And fuck, if you don't like them, then whatever. You are free to enjoy whatever music you want. Don't take it as a personal attack or anything, it's just a debate. And hey, I have enjoyed debating with you. This isn't the first time, and I'm sure not the last time we have disagreed.

Requiem

That song is -very- different than any I listened to before, admittedly. I got most of the ones I tried from their 'most viewed' just to see what they were about. It's not quite as soulless as what I heard, but it's still quite forgettable to me.

Dunno. I hear the 'classic' sound they were going for, and I'd say they pulled it off. But it sounds like one of those bands from 40 years ago that might have been 'in rotation' back then but would only have a very particular 'oldies' crowd that listened to them still.

Really don't have a whole lot more to say about it. It's incredibly boring and I have no urge to sing along or move to the music or anything. Doesn't move me emotionally or physically. That's all it comes down to really.

Dunno. The fact that I have very little else to say about them says more about my opinion of them than anything I could say probably. They just don't tingle my senses.

FakeLaser

I don't know that it's pointless. They're two contemporary garage bands. It prompted an interesting discussion.

And I doubt too many people have heard Thee Oh Sees. So this would be an appropriate place to bring them up, amongst fans of another garage band.

I'm still getting used to this not taking things personally on the internet thing. :shifty: I haven't taken anything you've said personally, but I always worry that some criticism I give is going to spiral out of control and drastically offend someone as it typically does so I try to guard my responses a bit.
