Just checking this out on Netflix and it's been really good. The info online indicates it was well-received and well-liked, but it was cancelled before work started on season 3. Is there any actual reason they killed it off? Was it one of those shows critics loved but nobody watched? Bad decision by a network? The artwork was painted using the blood of Jews and baby seals?

Wouldn't be the first good series to be canned Spiderman: TNAS was over after one season and they ended the damn thing with such a cliffhanger.

Spider-Man: TNG?

:shifty:

I know one of the reasons is because of the new Spider-man series that's coming out.

Disney and Greg Weisman have....a lukewarm relationship at best. Wouldn't be the first one of this shows they've canned before they should and won't be the last.

They canceled a popular and ostensibly liked show for a future one that's still to be seen?

I actually was surprised to see Weisman's name on this. I thought he was done with them after some rather harsh words.

From what I understand, SSM got axed because of the legal issues involving Sony, Disney, Marvel, and the rights to the Spider-Man franchise. Disney bought Marvel, but thanks to the movies, Sony still had the rights to Spider-Man, and they were the ones behind Spectacular. After some legal broo-ha-ha, Disney got the rights to do their own animated Spidey series (though Sony still gets the movies I think), and decided they wanted to do the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon currently in the works.

It's a shame, because Spectacular was an absolutely excellent show-- my second-favorite superhero cartoon of all time, behind Batman The Animated Series. The dialogue was really good, the characters were well-written (and holy shit, they actually made me root for Gwen Stacy over Mary Jane?), the villains were all extremely entertaining, and the animation was top-notch. And the theme song will now be stuck in my head for the rest of the week now that I've been reminded of it.

I didn't know he did WITCH.

Then again, I barely know what WITCH is, so....

Gwen Stacy was fucking ADORABLE.

Not to mention I actually liked what they did with Venom, a rarity in the cartoons. And Spider-Man himself was top-notch (I loved that he could actually balance banter and his own troubles at once). It's a shame they canned it, especially since the new cartoon does not sound as good (Though I won't actually judge it until I've seen it), but at least you had the reason.

It's still stupid, but at least I know.

And yeah, this has to be one of the best animated superhero shows ever. The animation was a bit more stylised than I would have liked, but really, who gives a fuck? It was quality anyway.

If there's one silver lining about the end of Spectacular, it's that Weisman got hired by Warner Bros. to do Young Justice. So now instead of just one franchise, he gets to play around with the entire DC Universe. Not as good as SSM, but it's still a really good show.

Also, here's a nice little best-of reel I found, now that I'm thinkin' of SSM

"Glib does not equate to clever, Spider-Man."
"Yeah, well, the ratio of arms to sanity hasn't exactly been established."

Or however the whole thing went.

Wouldn't mind the idea of having a series where he passes the reigns to his next of kin like they have in the comics btw I was referring to the MTV series here is the intro for it almost has more of a Spider-Man 2099 vibe to it.

Yeah, I caught an episode of that once. Was tickled that Lisa Loeb was doing voice acting, but it didn't really do much for me.

It may have been a good show, I just never really "got into" it. Then again, in this day and age of being able to watch a whole season of programming in a couple days, it's easier to fall in love with a show....Or hate it entirely, I suppose.

The MTV series had Neil Patrick Harris as Spidey, didn't it?

The 90's spiderman is the only Spiderman I like. All of the new ones just dont have the spirit.

There's something really hilarious about that.

The show was really good but I was never into the art style. It's a shame that it got canceled because the Spider-Man voice actor was great.

The art style is kinda fucked, and I thought it was gonna bother me at first. It didn't, in the end.
