View Full Version : Who would you say is the most technical "bodybuilder" type?

Rollermacka

It's obvious that Vince would rather sign a 6 ft 3 280+ lb guy whos chiseled and train him, rather than a smaller guy who can actually wrestle. With that being said, who would you say is/ was the most technically sound big builder type (Lex Luger, Scott Steiner, Rob Terry, Ezekiel Jackson, etc) wrestler in pro wrestling?

Brock Lesnar is the first name that comes to mind.

Would you say that Mike Awesome would fall into the "bodybuilder" category? He was tall and jacked in his prime but I dont know if he'd be considered the same type as Mason Ryan

YEah, Early 90s Steiner was good.

Its a weird topic. most big men lend their "style" to their size, and dont really work technical matches, even if possible. Hogan could work a decent match in the 80s, but rarely did.

Here is one...Scott Hall. Dude was a fucking monster and I think he is highly under-rated for in ring skill.

Only big guy worth his salt is Lesnar. From what I've seen of Steiner's early work he wasn't bad, but I wouldn't call him technically sound by any means. Lesnar however was the goods.

Its not very specific. Hall (more so in the Pre WWE days) was fucking massive, like a power lifter...So aybe that kind of size is different from say, Bobby Lashley.

Whole thread is fucked.

Back to my original point...No big guys really were...technical. If you are massive like Zeke you throw out HULK SMASH offense, not Chain Wrestling.

Lesnar and Triple H would be the obvious choices but i'd throw Swagger's name in there too even though i'd say he's more on the other end of the spectrum he's not as bulky.

Probably HHH or Hall. Both guys actually were body builders when they were younger.

John Cena without the limited ability.

Here's the thing about this: Cena can actually wrestle. I know that the IWC bagging on John is the Cartoon Network Thing To Do, but at the very least, his matches with Punk prove he can step up his workrate.

Not saying he's a Lance Storm in the ring, but he just fell into the "insanely over/phone it in" category that a lot of guys that become huge stars fall into. HHH has undoubtably done it. Austin, for damn sure... and that's even before the injuries caught up with him. And even though we know better, Hogan could have been the most ring-savvy shooter in the world, but if ripping shirts off and a leg drop gets you the big bucks and reactions, why the hell would you do moonsaults nightly?

On topic: I'm inclined to agree with the Lesnar consensus.

Scotty Steiner really wasn't as technical as his brother back in the day (even though he rarely displayed it), and it seems as the years rolled on, Scott's muscles increased at about the same rate as his in-ring work decreased (more botches and more bruiser type moves).

Also, Scott Hall didn't look quite like he did in that pic with Pillman by the time he worked for Vince. If he did, he would have been multiple time world champion in the first 3 weeks. Hell, he'd've slamed Yokozuna and been on the <s>Lex</s>Scott Express.

Awesome was more like earlier 'Taker or Kane. "Agile for a big man" type guy.

The only one who could do it well was Brock Lesnar. I dunno if HHH fits into this category he kinda does but I put him more in the group with Austin, Rock, Savage etc... guys who look like heavyweights but aren't bodybuilder freaks

There's a reason Lesnar got the biggest push ever. He had the look Vince craves AND he was really good in the ring.

First that comes to my mind is Lesnar.
He has that combination of power, speed, and technique that is extremely rare.

However, when I think of a bodybuilder type, I think of the massively muscled, extremely ripped Mr. Universe type.
Lesnar is huge, no doubt, but he isn't super-cut.

That being said...most wrestlers who fit into the Mr. Universe body type can barely walk through the ropes without tripping over their own feet.

So I'll say Lesnar.

It doesn't matter. He is the most classic example of a body builder type.

Even Batista himself admits he doesn't have a bodybuilder build.

Joe Villa: After trying out in the WCW power plant, you were told you would never make it as a professional wrestler, yet here you are as one of the best. How did you respond to this initial feedback?

Batista: Initially, I was crushed because I was closing on 30-years old and had spent my life bouncing and bodybuilding. Finally, I decided to give up bodybuilding. I didn't have the build for it; I was competing against guys that were the same weight as me but ten inches shorter. Basically I was crushed, I had two kids and I figured that this was my last chance to get into pro wrestling.

Luger and Steiner had great physiques but lacked charisma and I don't think they ever quite won over the fans as either faces or heels.

Bulldog had a great bodybuilder type physique.

As for the point about smaller guys who can wrestle being short changed for big guys with physiques, ultimately pro wrestling is about those who stand out from the crowd people want to see a clash between gladiatorial heavyweights, not puny runts. There were famous small guys who had awesome physiques like Rey, Eddie, Benoit, even Jericho. But if everyone in wwe was like Daniel Bryan people would switch off. The reason people love him right now is because he plays the role of the loveable loser or the small guy overcoming the odds and everyone loves an underdog like that. But if wwe was full of that type of star, the fans would get bored very quickly. So,e are fickle and will not appreciate good wrestling and just want to see a brawl or physical battle between leviathans.

Bobo

Beth Phoenix, Lisa Marie Varon, ivory, Tamina Snuka they all have the best physiques. Would love to rub baby oil into their muscles and titties.

Jura
02-11-2014, 11:40 PM
Bodybuilder-esque or actual bodybuilder? Triple H, Otunga, Chris Masters etc would be bodybuilders. If you are putting the emphasis on "bodybuilder" then I would actually go with Triple H. If you are just talking about a tallish to very tall guy with a big muscular physique then Brock Lesnar it is.

A bodybuilder is someone who works out a lot of, if not all, of the muscles in their body and some do it professionally. Then you have people who are into fitness and just work out and then there are power-lifters. Brock, The Rock, Goldberg and professional athletes are more so of the latter two. Mark Henry, some Olympians and people in Strong Man competitions are power-lifters.

No problem, the thread has kinda taken it's own turn but it's ok. Basically, most people believe that the larger, more physically imposing a wrestler is, the less technical their offense has to be because they can "get over" with the fans because of their size while utilizing a basic offense. I guess what I'm asking isn't who "actually was a bodybuilder before wrestling" but who are some guys with that amazing physique that were still very technical in the ring.

Side note, another person I'm surprised nobody mentioned was Kerry Von Erich.
