View Full Version : Movie Series Where The Movies Actually Keep Getting Better?

What movie series can you name where the movies are better than the last?

It's not the Matrix of course and not Terminator since T2 is undoubtedly the best. I haven't seen LOTR in a long ass time but I'd say more or less they were pretty equal, I could be wrong. The Fast and the Furious franchise is an option but I believe it doesn't quite cut it. TFTF1 is a classic and a novelty just like the original Matrix in which it can stand alone and is different from the rest but I believe Tokyo Drift is the best in that series and many feel like 2F2F is a drop from the original.

I would like to discuss Undisputed. I really liked the first movie with Ving Rhames and Wesley Snipes. Then Undisputed 2 came out, direct to video probably but it was actually pretty good. I was still holding on to the feeling of the original being better but after seeing all three and watching the original again, I can say that 2 is better and 3 is better than both. Even with personal opinion and feelings aside, other people seem to think so too since on imdb.com the ratings of each movie are higher than the previous one.

Are there any other trilogies and whatever the term is for 4, 5, 6 etc movies in a series that you guys can name?

I would like to put the Bond movies up for discussion as well but I'm thinking to separate the movies by what actor played James Bond. So for example, the Roger Moore movies will be separate from the Sean Connery and Daniel Craig movies.

I could see someone make a case for Toy Story.

Not me though. I liked the first one better than the second.

I guess we can rule out any horror series for example Final Destination, Saw, Hostel (even though part three hasn't come out yet), Friday the 13th, etc unless someone can think of one.

The Evil Dead Trilogy I find to get better...well definently the jump from 1 to 2.

Nah, the Bond films didn't keep getting better. With certain Bonds, they got better, then got worse. Others have too few films to judge off.

In a semi-cheating move, I will say "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". It's *technically* only a single sequel of a remake of a series of movies, but fuck it! It was great!

You mean like the "*Jersey Trilogy* that's really 6 movies long (and Jersey Girl doesn't count)"?

Indiana Jones. The 4th was totally unnecessary. The first three were great. Temple of Doom still bugs me out to this day.

American Pie perhaps. Though now they are making a fourth one.

Not counting spin-offs.

The Bourne series. The 3rd one is my favorite!

The Batman series would be the same as well considering the drop when Clooney and Kilmer were the Batman and then the rise when it was Bale was the Batman.

I want to say the Rambo series but the second one might have been better than the third. The Rocky series would probably be the same although I never saw any films past Rocky IV.

X-Men if you took out Last Stand got better imo. Also most people will say Dark Knight improved on Batman Begins, but obviously we don't know about the third installment just yet.

Also I know a bunch of people that thought LotR got better with each new film. Although personally I preferred The Fellowship of the Ring to the other two.

Rocky

Always thought the Ivan Drago one is the best one....

"I MUST BREAK YOU"
"IF HE DIES HE DIES"

Harry Potter

Mostly cause Emma Watson kept getting one more movie close to being legal.

Still, each released Nolan Batman has been better than the last. :p

Also, I thought Xmen 2 was kinda shitty, so I'd be against that middle thing.

Rocky

"I MUST BREAK YOU"
"IF HE DIES HE DIES"

There were two movies after that.

Harry Potter

Oh, like you'd wait if you had the shot.

And the chloroform.

MI:3 was easily better than it's predecessors and I've heard that Ghost Protocol is just as good if not the best in the series.

Go out and and watch it and tell me if it's true.

Pretty close. I really enjoyed American Pie 2 over American Pie. Though American Pie 2 was superior to American Wedding.

I liked the first spin-off movie too.

Star Wars prequel trilogy.

I do not think this should count because how could it have gotten crappier after Episode I?

Dunno. I like Episode I better than Episode II.

I don't know, look at episode 2.

So I guess that would be throw in a wooden love subplot with wooden actors designed for viewers without wood between their legs (as if any girl has ever watched Star Wars), wooden political scenes and...Ummmm...I'm running out of ways to force "wood" into this. Too bad Lucas wasn't.

So yeah, I guess this depends on how it goes. Episode III is the best of the prequels, so if it's just better than its predecessors, it counts. But if we're talking progressively better, where III>II>I, not even close. Because Episode II made ! look brilliant.

Ghost protocol is great, mindless fun. But I wouldn't take it over MI:2, which was the best of the lot. My vote is for Underworld. Batman series is premature but noteworthy to add already. And The Oceans series all deserve props
