View Full Version : If Mason Ryan Didn't Have an Accent, Would He Be Over.

I don't think of myself as prejudice, or a racist, or what have you. I'm just wondering, if Mason Ryan didn't have a thick Welsh accent, would he have more microphone time and be more over, or have bigger opportunities?
Or is he just green through and through?
He is as green as a green, raping hoss gets.

I dont think so. If anything, an accent makes him stand out.

That is... pretty green.

He needs a mouthpiece or he needs to attend promo classes in FCW.
He should probably attend some wrestling classes, too.

He should bring a sheep to the ring with him.

It is very difficult for someone to get over with me when they have an accent. Sheamus is really the only person who has ever. I really have no reason why I feel this way, but it just is that way.

Accent doesn't effect his lack of wrestling ability.

Very green and sort of too muscular which seems weird considering Vince loves the big man type wrestlers but can't risk giving him a huge push due to the potential of him failing a Wellness test.
He was a lot better filling in a bodyguard role like he did with Nexus than to just be randomly inserted in different feuds without no real build.

He should bring a sheep to the ring with him.
And then do what comes natural to the Boyo's :) Think of the ratings, in front of thousand of American fans wondering "wtf is the sheep for".
Mason Ryan, the Ram Slammer.

Sheep is a bad idea, ye him saying "Boyo" all the time would be funny.

Green as gooseshit. Wrestling already has its token Welsh in Rob Terry. That neither helps or hinders him.

Wrestlemania 29 the headline match, "FELLA VS BOYO", alternatively "Potato vs leek".

Mason Ryan & Rob Terry could be an awesome MONSTER tag team in 10 years time.....I can picture them with a little pipsqueak manager demolishing everybody.....

I know he's English, but I don't think I've heard him speak yet... although when he's on TV I don't pay attention anyway.

Mason Ryan is just too green. The guy needs to do some more work in FCW, and really get the time to develop into a competent and confident presence in the ring. Remove him from the roster and have Skip Sheffield or Brodus Clay take his place. Ryan can return a few years down the track.
Also, if there's anyone that could use a manager, it is Mason Ryan.

Triple H should manage Mason Ryan. They have a similiar muscular build and they would need a face to talk for him.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone start a comment with "I'm not a racist...BUT" and the next thing actually wasn't racist. Well Dunn.

It has nothing to do with his accent, and all to do with his very limited wrestling ability.
Batista was shit, and Mason Ryan is worse than him right now.
So whatever is less or worse than shit, that's where he is right now. And that's why he hasn't taken off.

So completely off topic whatever happened to the English guy who did the backflip slam finisher?
He was a pirate for a bit...

Not sure why I thought of him tbh.
I wonder if maybe he might have done better in the current climate WWE.
Oh well, at least this way he (more likely) lives a long and full life and doesn't die in a hotel room coked out of his brain in his 50s...

Living burnt and bouncing your grand kids on your knee probably beats dying in a pool of your own vomit and excrement coked out of your brain without a family other than the pseudo family the wrestling business may give you...

When you think about it, for a guy who was not considered too interesting on the mic and had spent most of his career in Europe built as an "athletic monster," he got saddled with some really ridiculous gimmicks. The pirate thing was over and working, too, and they completely pulled the rug out from under it. The dude could have at least been a successful mid-card act that flirted with the main event in a Hurricane sort of way.
I've seen an interview with him post-WWE career (recently, actually), and he sounded like he didn't sound too interested in a return. He said that when he was injured Vince told him that "he can take time off, but there might not be a spot for him when he returns." If I remember, they used Mark Henry to write off the pirate character. This is when Henry was sending people on "sabbaticals" instead of inducting them into the Hall of Pain.

Can always rely on Noid for the skinny on a situation :D
Tbh I kind of tuned out a bit before he got the Pirate gimmick, it was a random thought more than anything.
And yes I agree his Gimmick was ridiculous. I feel were this slightly more serious WWE in place back then he might have made it further. I dont for a second think he should return because I dont think he would make it in the WWE we have now.
Just that with the lack of serious talent back in that time if they had todays mindset with back thens roster and a decent push he could have been something.

Does he still look like the Jolly Green Giant (see what I did there?)? I don't watch tv much in general, let alone wrestling so I'm out of the loop mostly these days.
What I'd do is pair him with a mouthpiece (a good one), have him grow the beard back and cut that hair (honestly, he looks like Batista's less jacked up, more personable kid brother) and just not say anything for the most part. It could be a "you handle the promos, I'll handle the pain" mutual agreement or something. Have him get promo lessons irl, while all the talking on tv is done for him until he outgrows the gimmick (ie he can speak well enough on the stick). Heyman era hoss booking would help too. I remember Big Show doing shit like swinging Rey Mysterio's stretcher into a ringpost but losing like every match of any significance and still looking like the most terrifying person on the planet. If they can turn the floundering hip hop hippo Albert into the A-Train they can do it for Mason Ryan too.

Sometimes less mic time is more and I think it rings true in his case he just needs to focus on ripping heads and try to be less Batista ver 2.

Welsh and proud here! :) I don't know about an accent ruining his push, I'd say the Welsh accent gives him something different! I think it might have something to do with his lack of personality

I know his cousin and a guy who went to school with him.
Wales is a fucking small country.
Given the area of Wales he is from, and the two people I know connected with him, I might take a stab in the dark and guess he is actually first language Welsh not English. Certainly those in a similar position I know might seem completely fluent in English but under pressure, actually struggle a bit.
So yeah, this may be a factor in poor promos...although only a guess.

Aye, I don't live far from where he is from, All he will ever be is that Batista lookalike with a funny accent, that will follow him to his grave. You never know folks he will improve in a year, he just needs time.
