Yeah my mum has one and she uses it a lot. I still prefer actual books though.

No.
I prefer actual books, I don't need another gadget, and like with music, I would rather have things I buy in physical format.

I was considering the Kindle Fire but opted for the Archos 80 G9 as it's only like fifty bucks more, with Bluetooth, USB host and Micro SD support.
Plus, it's an actual android tablet, not Amazondroid, and I ca download books through the kindle app anyway.
Which I won't, because I have a third gen kindle for reading. I would never use a tablet as a regular reader, as if I wanted to read off a computer screen, I'd put it on my PC.
E-Ink is awesome because it reads like real paper (more or less) and doesn't make my eyes boggle. Which is why I heartily endorse the Kindle line. But the Fire is definitely not what I'd want for reading shit. I hear it's great for movies and such, though.
Of course, not everyone's as particular as me, so a lot of those perks probably mean fuck all to your mum. Just saying.

I got a plain-old regular kindle for Christmas. I gotta say, I really like it, though I wish they had e-ink in color (I'm sure that's coming sooner or later). Very nice little gadget, and has actually gotten me reading a lot more frequently.

Colour e-ink is evidently at least a couple years out still.
I wouldn't mind a colour e-ink reader, but having a kindle has definitely got me reading more again.

The only issue i have with the Kindle is the price of some of the E-books,i know there are ways around it,but having to pay tax on top of any i buy makes it cheaper to buy the actual books in alot of cases.

And many of the books that are more expensive are part of Amazon's 4 for 3 deal, making it cheaper.
It's technically Sony's fault, as they were the first ones to allow publishers to set prices for ebooks. I mean, Amazon didn't strictly have to do the same....Unless they wanted people to actually support the product they'd invested heavily in.

When did they start charging tax for online sales? I thought I remembered a time when stuff bought online was tax-free.

Maybe just in the UK, a paperback can cost £3-4 while the Ebook can be another 2 or 3 on top

All websites will be charging taxes by the end of the year, Im pretty sure of it. Tax free shopping on the internet is over unless you live in a state without sales taxes.

Usually you are charged tax if the company has a physical store in your state but Amazon gets around this somehow. For example, most likely you have a Walmart in your state so if you buy something from Walmart.com they will add tax on top of shipping and handling.
