Don't be pussies and give me ties or any of that bullshit. One game and why.

Alright, one and only one honorable mention.

Max Payne (PC)

Because it is my favourite game of all time. Been looking for games and films with the dark, rainy, big city, underlying tragedy neo-noir "atmosphere" ever since. Huge mark for that stuff.

I have never played it, I saw my cousin play it and I loved the bullet-time. Is it available for 360 or PS2?

Also, my favorite game of all time is Metal Gear Solid 3, The story is amazing, the ending is perfect and how it should have been finished. It has its little jokes without going Naked Raiden, has the stealth factor that made the original such a hit but in the wilderness where it takes camouflage into account. Some of the coolest bosses in any game I have ever encountered. The main character is an established badass and there are so many styles you can play to finish. Hell, I used to spend the first hour or so hording alligator meat and shooting fruit from trees.

A close and I mean close second, would be GTA: San Andreas. It was my first 3D GTA game on a system I owned (I had previously played Vice City to Racing Hillary at a friends place) San Andreas overwhelmed me, I completed it 9 times now, once with a 100% completion (which includes all the driving, flying, etc schools) The story, gameplay and everything remains the standard for a GTA game and I am enormously excited for GTA V.

How much they cost, this could be much simpler but CSL is recommending the PS2 version and it likely would only be a few bucks.

I remember buying it along with Bioshock and Devil May Cry 4 as a deal for $25 or something at Eb Games by a friend that works there. When I went to play it, the disc was cracked and I have misplaced the receipt somewhere. Likely will just go purchase another copy as I have heard nothing but good things.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is definetley my favroite of all time. Everything about that game from the graphics to the storyline is perfect. Best in the Zelda franchise and my favorite game ever. I don't know how many times I wanted to speak for Link as an adult when going back to Kokiri Forest.

Just goes to show that a game doesn't have to have an "M" rating to be flat-out incredible.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (PC)

Epic... so epic. It's the RPG that got everything right, IMO. Light years ahead of its time; only now are games like Skyrim coming out that challenge the Baldur's Gate games' immersion and epic scale.

Resident Evil 4

Just fell in love with the game, as I was always a big Resident Evil fan, but was beginning to struggle to get thru some of them (such as Resident Evil: Zero and Code Veronica) But I couldn't put the game down for the first 2 weeks I got it, and played it many times.

Fun Fact: I've beaten Resident Evil 4 on 4 different consoles (Gamecube, Wii, PS2 & Xbox 360)

edit: didn't explain why.

Super Castlevania IV - I'm sure that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but I really enjoy this game. I get bored of modern 3D games, but I can always revisit good old 2D platformers.

Tie Fighter Collector's CD-Rom - my favorite computer game of all time. Such a fun game, sweet midi tunes, cool cut-scenes, great mission structure, fun simulation aspect with managing power systems, damage, etc.

I still have my original copies of both these games. Haven't played Tie-Fighter since the late 90's though :p. Need to hook up my old 1997 Pentium MMX 133mhz computer one of these days, lol.

The first Legend of Zelda game.

Sentimental reasons for it being one of the 1st two games I ever owned (Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt being the other) and the 1st known game I ever beat on my own.

Easily played the First Quest hundreds of times and never felt bored and last year managed to actually to get around playing the Second Quest till it was done. Ended up becoming part of a personal gaming tradition to play and beat the game at least once a year.

I own 2 copies of the game itself (Wii VC and NES) along with a ROM copy but have saves stored on another 2-3 copies from games owned by a couple of cousins.

in DA:O you must have "hardend" alistar and liliana (done there side quest and told them to toughen up at the end dialouge.) then go meet Isabella in the whore house FOR THE FIRST TIME.) if you have lilianna and alistar with you (and your female) you can have an orgy. you could replace either with Zeveran and he doesnt care what if your male or female. so there are orgy options lol.

Not a typical pick but it's the only game that I can say I have played every day for like 3 years now.

It's basically like those old text based games on the Commodore 64 or Vic-20 but with stick figures. Don't let that fool you though. The writing is tremendous and the game mechanics are actually really deep.

It's not really an RPG, so there's not much correlation.

One of the main reasons I've owned any handheld since the original Game Boy, TBH. Not a system seller in itself (for me), but certainly a "system motivator."

i was having this conversation the other day "what makes an rpg." in reality every video game is a role playing game seeing as you're role playing SOMETHING. really isnt much of a clear answer. for me, like i said, item management, progression (typically through levels but not always) and some form of number based combat with invisible dice rolls.

Usually, some element of story should come in there, too. I mean, the oldest CRPGs are grindfests based on the D&D model of the dungeon crawl, but nowadays RPGs generally fall into one of two categories: The Western RPG, with a lot of freedom and choices, however inconsequential or the JRPG, which tends more to the "visual novel" style or linear story arc. One of the two.

Pokémon games tend to lack in terms of story or character arc. They're roughly on par with early Super Mario games. Newer ones are a bit more oriented to it, but they're still pretty lackluster.

true, hell story was really present in table top DnD. even if it was made on hand it was still very present.

That was one of the big things that separated early D&D from its predecessor, Chainmail.

There are certainly places where it gets dodgy, though, and I don't deny that. People used to argue over Diablo 2 (and since I never played the first, I couldn't comment there), but it seems "close enough" to me.

Pokémon strikes me more as an offshoot of the trading card game. While you can certainly have elements of a TCG in an RPG, you can also have games that are completely separate.

Don't get me wrong on any of this. I love Pokémon, and I love to have my cute little monsters get stronger and stuff, and I like to beat the bosses and stuff. But I think I'd probably argue Saints Row the Third as an RPG before Pokémon.

well im hardly qualified to argue against it seeing as i've never played...they really should put one on console...maybe virtual console?

It'd be awesome if they made a console version.

I don't think we'll see a legit version.

Though you can probably play a ROM version on your computer if you want. Don't know if that appeals to you or not. Just saying there's probably emulators and shit. Maybe you can even homebrew on a Wii or something.

They are just like skills you level up. Its an RPG and if it isn't. Neither are some shin metamorphosis games.

Clox says they're an RPG.

That basically proves they aren't.

www.playr.org

I recently played one of the pokémon games on there. Annoying part is not being able to trade pokémon with friends (obvioiusly) so you can't catch them all. That was the part I used to enjoy the most about playing the older ones when I was younger and everyone had it.

NB. If anyone goes on there and tries playing it, don't play Diamond because it's not actually Pokémon. Although play it for 5 minutes if you want some badly translated gibberish dialogue.

Its weird, RPG is in technical terms, A Role Playing Game. In every game you are playing the role of a character, hence every game is technically a role playing game. I think to be an RPG, you need Health, Mana/Magic/Magicka and a Level Progression that grants skills through time and gameplay.

Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, etc.

Thats just my interpretation.

And please don't point out games considered RPG's that dont contain those things.

It's sorta better these days because of WiFi. The big problem is Nintendo is against having an actual working online system, so you can't communicate with people very well, can only trade in limited circumstances, etc.

Also, 80% of the people on PGL are trading hacked Pokémon. I wouldn't mind so much, except everybody and their brother wants to trade an obviously hacked shiny Rayquaza or some such.

And please don't point out games considered RPG's that dont contain those things.
