View Full Version : Do you think that they have a back-up winner for the Royal Rumble?

I've always thought about this and especially more as time goes on considering Rumble spots are happening more and more. It isn't completely implausible for the guy that's suppose to win the rumble to mis-step while on the apron or something and go tumbling to the floor. Do you think they account for this when making the final four or when picking the draft order in any way? I know it's kind of a long shot but I've always kind of secretly wanted to see something go wrong with the winner so somebody would have to take over.

Also, what rumble botches can you remember? I remember specifically Goldust jumping over the top rope because somebody didn't clothesline him over correctly. Also, Taka faceplanting and knocking himself out.

i would imagine that the refs would have to give the order who is gonna win once the chaos died down and they figured out their second choice. but going into it i doubt they have a plan b ready.

The finish to the 2005 one was botched.

Vince also botched when he came to restart the match.

Savage put himself over the top rope when it wasn't his time to be eliminated. Heenan and Monsoon had to clean up the mess by suggesting that you had to be propelled out by someone else. Completely ignoring that Andre had once stepped over the top rope to eliminate himself.
I also remember someone in the 90s very blatantly oversell some kind of chop to eliminate themselves.
Also, does Chyna being put in the Rumble at all count as a botch?

Mostly because a plan a stretches credibility.

Was the Paul London flip face first onto the floor during the actual Rumble or a regular battle royale/mini-Rumble?

I'd assume they have the final ppv before Mania serve as an emergency backup in case the Rumble was a botched finish. It should be possible considering the Rumble winner has used his guaranteed title match before Mania and it was Cena requesting his title match occur before Mania one year. Of course that Rumble wasn't a botched finish but it did let the WWE allow the title match be done before the traditional spot at Mania.

I would guess they have a back-up ready to win the Rumble match, but between the Rumble and Wrestlemania they would find a way to set things the way they were meant to be... or add the RR winner to whatever match was already planned.

Taka wasn't legally entered in 2000..... Kaientai had gotten bumped from the match and tried to get their REVENGE!

I remember Alex Riley being accidentally eliminated last year. Pretty sure he was supposed to still be in the match to be involved in the elimination of Cena. Obviously doubt he was supposed to win but botches happen. I'm sure there is a backup plan in mind just in case something happens.

Pretty sure Santino was supposed to win last year.

The most famous botch is probably The Rock in 2000 when Big Show threw him over and Rock was supposed hang onto the ropes saving himself. But both his feet accidentally touched the floor and they made an angle out of it.

WWE doesn't seem to care anymore about putting the Rumble winner in the last match at Wrestlemania.

2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011's Rumble winners weren't in Wrestlemania's last match.

Wasn't that the point?

Considering none of the main angles showed his feet on the ground, they could have hidden it. The fact that they didn't makes me think it was planned that way.

I don't think they have a back up winner tbh. If anything, they can just do what they did 2005 or have the heel authority figure getting the eliminated guy back in somehow.

I've wondered about this with ladder matches in the past too, like what if one of the times one of the guys not meant to win was struggling to get the briefcase/title/whatever before a spot, but it came undone and they clearly had it in their hands. Wonder if someone would just be like "oh shit, that wasn't meant to happen" and try and hook it back on.

To be honest, that's kinda what I thought happened when Swagger won MitB.

Something similar did happen in TNA years ago during one of those X matches. The big difference was the giant X kept falling on its own and not someone accidentally holding it.

In TNA's case, they just stopped the match and rehooked the thing. I think even one person tried to rush and grabbed the X on the floor but didn't count as a win.

Honestly, I don't think theres a backup. If a spot is too risky (a la Morrison last year) I just know he won't win. When Morrison did that spot last year I said "Yeah, he's not gonna win this year...." and sure enough he didnt.

I read that it wasn't planned.

One time, the X fell and Petey Williams (I think) was right underneath it and caught it and was declared the winner. But I don't think he was booked to win, so I think they had a rematch the next week.
