I am an acute art bug and like to collect physical copies of albums that I like. I am considering purchasing a record player (Jenson for $50 on amazon) on my birthday.

A lot of vinyl enthusiasts have suggested that the analog sound of records are far more superior to that of CDs and digital. This curiosity has let me to considering it for purchase.

Should I get a record player solely for higher quality music? Poll coming shortly.

If you have the space for it and plan on building a small collection, why not?

if you are doing it for the better sound, then it's not a good idea to get a cheap turntable like the one you are suggesting.

Maybe I will wait till I have my own space.

I am not willing to make a major investment :-\

then it probably isn't worth it. plus with the cheaper version you will probably run more of a risk of scratching your albums and/or replacing parts.

Depends on how big a douche you are.

The whole "vinyl has better sound" is utter bullshit, in part propagated by bad CD mastering in the early days of the format and in part by fossils and hipsters.

It's the equivalent of homeopathy.

I'm pretty sure that's not analog v digital, but rather stoned v sober.

I collect records, and I do not notice a big difference. The difference is only present when listening to a vinyl album that was recorded in the 60's - 80's. The vinyls released now sound exactly like CDs.

Definetely buy a "vintage" turntable though, the new ones aren't of very good quality.

You mean the ones that are generally mastered from digital sources sound the same as a digital device?

I was expecting a "douches like Vinyl" post by you. I swear to God!

I kinda agree with bad CD mastering. Rick Rubin being one of the biggest contributors as far as poor production is concerned. I will also say that a digital vinyl rip of Death Magnetic sounds way better than the CD. Probably because the sound is very raw and real. The CDs were a victim of horrible clipping.

There are new albums which are actually being mastered for iTunes. In my honest opinion, the tracks offered for purchase on iTunes are below average. If you have a good pair of headphones, you can tell.

I am glad that bands like Radiohead and NIN are giving away their music in a variety of formats. Online digital stores such as 7Digital have started giving out a few albums in FLAC (both 16-bit and 24-bit).

There is this website by the name of HDTracks.com. Although they have a very limited catalog, the songs are more clearer and rich in details

Yeah, the iTunes store is on the compressed side anyway. while I don't need FLAAC, a higher bitrate would be a good thing.

I don't think it sounds "better" but vinyl has a different sound that can be appealing. So yeah, it can be worth it.

I don't like listening to "records" in the sense they're not MP3's and I can take them everywhere easily, but there is something so undeniably fucking sexy about the crackling vinyl noise.

Yeah vinyl has a certain aesthetic that can be really nice, but the sound quality argument is total BS
