View Full Version : So Cody's only 56 days from tying Shelton's one-reign IC title run...

He's at 188 days. This also means he's only 22 days (3 SmackDown! TV tapings) from tying once-partner, now bitter arch-rival Randy Orton's 7-month reign that went from Dec. '04-July '05, and interestingly enough, Shelton started his 8-month reign October 19, '05, with it not ending until Carlito's RAW brand debut on June 20, '06.
So, just wondering, with WM coming up in 48 days from now, do you foresee Rhodes holding on until 8 days after that and eclipsing Mr. Benjamin's record, and if he does, do you think he will pass anyone else on the one-reign IC title record holders list?
Discuss.

Like to see them go the RVD route and let him run with the belt the way he did with the TV title, only drop it when they move him up to the main event.

I dunno. I think eventually they'll probably make something of this Goldust thing and then before ya know it, Goldy will win it from him. Maybe not though. Also, you do realize that would mean if your wishes came true and Cody reigned for almost 2 years (700 days to be exact), that would be more than 1½ times HTM's record for longest all-time IC title run of 454 days, right?

I would love to see him destroy 454 days (HTM)
but
I only see him holding on to it no longer than 400 days.

I could see him easily holding it for another 2 months considering nobody has been really built up right now to be seen as an actual threat for his title at Mania.
Ziggler had a long reign with the US title as well that really didn't start to end until Ryder got built-up enough on tv even though the feud started on Ryder show months earlier.

Well like King says in one of the older video games, rules and records are like bones...made to be broken.

Randy Orton's IC title reign is still his best championship reign and really helped to reinvigorate the division. Shelton Benjamin's first reign was great as well. Both reigns were alot better than Cody Rhodes reign who barely defends it. Its just a prop for him. He had like maybe one or two defenses against Booker T but none that I remember other than that.

LOL, you know what's odd? It just occurred to me...if you take the 7-month reign of Orton's (210 days) and combine it with Shelton's 8-month run (244 days), it comes out to 454 days. Hadn't even thought about that, like at all when I made this thread.
Oh, and I also realized that I coulda had a V8...® :shifty:

<font color=goldenrod>If they do wind up with Cody vs. Goldust at Mania, I still think Cody will prevail. I would think it winds up being Goldy's retirement match. So yeah, pretty certain Cody will pass Shelton's reign.
In fact, at the Draft this year (which they will still do and make a big deal out of it even though it's completely pointless, especially with SuperShows) I'm betting Cody gets drafted and brings the IC Belt back to Raw. Swagger or whoever the US champ is at the time goes to SmackDown.</font>

I dunno, maybe you're right...but all I'm saying is have you seen Goldust lately? Still looks like he's in pretty great shape for his age.

"I will become the greatest Intercontinental Champion... OF ALL THE TIMES!!!" That should have lasted longer.
I can see one of two things happening that would be awesome (but neither would likely come to be):
1) Cody's "prophecy" comes true and he "pulls an Ultimate Warrior". The only downside to this would be the fact that he'd have to drop the IC somewhere, and at this stage he has no "companions" he could simply award the title to. There would either be some tournament which won't really help elevate the title like honest-to-God feuds would, or he'll lose BOTH belts on the same night in some BS gauntlet or something and cry foul.
2) He makes it to 453 days, and loses the Intercontinental Championship at a house show, proving "anything can happen in the WWE!" Cody says screw that noise and goes after the big gold belt.

Interesting note: three weeks ago, he surpassed Goldust’s combined Intercontinental title reigns.
Could you imagine if Cody hung onto the belt until this time next year? At that point, people would start seeing it as an extension of his character, and the belt is good for him. I can’t think of a reason to take it from him, and the undercard don’t need to beat him to get the rub off him.
I just did the math, and Cody only needs to hold the belt until November 5th to tie The Honky Tonk Man’s record. That’s a stretch, but it’s less out of the question than holding it unitl WM29.
