View Full Version : Why do people hate Buff Bagwell?

Inspired by Hansos comment in the X-Pac thread.

I know he apparently had a bad attitude, but I always thought the guy had some potential.

With that said, I would be interested in hearing everyones reasons on why they may hate the guy.

Randy Savage gif to follow.

He had a shit attitude, he wasn't that brilliant in the ring, and to be honest, he had a great body, but a kinda gay look, and his body did at times seem a bit out of proportion, or completely fucking unusual.

I was a mark for him when I was a youngster though, the guy had loads of energy and charisma and could put on a good match if working with the right people.

I never was a fan of his. Pretty lame in the ring and I really hated his gimmick and intro music. Pretty femmi

I liked him in WCW, just think everyone takes the piss out of him b/c of calf implants and getting his mommy to phone in sick.

I never really watched WCW as a kid but I did know of the guys on the roster.

So I thought it was pretty cool to see Buff Bagwell in the WWF when he had his match with Booker T on Raw, theme music and all.

Speaking of which, I've always liked his theme. :$

Only thing he had in WCW was a good look and a cool entrance theme, his attitude and tendencies of getting his mum involved was the negative point about Bagwell. I don't know if I ever seen potential in him. He was better off as an American Male.

He was best as Scott Steiner's sidekick. He played that douchebag suckup role perfectly.

I liked him in WCW as part of the NWO but he was just another guy who wouldnt do clean jobs to anyone below him though. He had decent name value but that was about it,loved his giant hat though.

He put the final nail in the coffin of WCW as it's own entity. Not my reason but I'd wager that goes a long way to explain the anti-Bagwell sentiment.

He was obnoxious and not a very good wrestler. Also his character was pretty irritating at times.

In-ring wise, he never really got back to his "old self" after he came back from the neck injury. Character-wise, he played the nWo lackey role perfectly and was one of the most memorable of all the B-Teamers. Backstage, I don't know enough other than typical online BS to make a judgment. Is it just me or does the nWo B-Team theme sound way too "face-ish"?

Too huge of an ego which showed near the end of WCW when he (along with Lex) refused to put over younger talent. He would always boost of himself being bigger than in reality which probably caused a lot of resentment in the lockeroom.

I believe in the case of his short time in the WWF, he kept complaining about almost everything to why he had a lower status than some wrestlers or why he didn't automatically get all the benefits top stars get. I think in the Death of WCW book, it explains how he wanted to be pampered like in WCW and automatically felt he was a top star in WWF once he got there without having to earn those benefits.

because of his image and his Mom phoning in sick for him and bugging the "front office" quite a bit when he was under contract to Vince and he became a bit of a joke because of it/the internet have been piling on ever since. Like a running joke that a bunch of people laugh at despite plenty of them not actually knowing why they're laughing or because others are. See: Matt Hardy, Ric Flair, X Pac etc.

James Steele
02-19-2012, 04:40 PM
Wait, his mom really called the office? I thought everybody just ragged about Judy Bagwell because they stuck her on a pole.

CSL
02-19-2012, 04:42 PM
nah, apparently she used to phone the front office and even Jim Ross to complain about stuff, to check up and once infamously to phone in sick for him. JR talks about it on one of the roundtables and it's been referenced by others as well

Bagwell was at his career best when he was Scott Steiner's lackey. On his own, Buff was nothing. His wrestling was below average, absolutely uninspired and unexciting, and I challenge anyone to find a single Buff Bagwell match that was anywhere near 4 star quality. The guy simply didn't have good matches. His mic skills were limited and he relied far too much on his shitty catch phrase. He was never going to be a top star and he's lucky to have risen as high up as he did in the business.

Add on all the other backstage bullshit and his mommy issues, and you have a total piece of shit tool who got way more spotlight in the Attitude era than he ever deserved.

He is an arrogant prick. He shoulder checked me at an indy show in Columbia and didn't even have the courtesy to apologize. My running joke with a former-wrestler friend was that I was going to get into wrestling for the sole purpose of taking a shit in his hat. That and the double arm DDT finish he sometimes uses is really dangerous. A couple of guys almost spiked themselves on the mat as a result.

Same night, I was in the bar with Team 3D. They were pretty cool, except for this one disrespectful little shit named Brandon Frontier (I think that's his name) who talked shit on them while accepting shots they were providing. The result was Team 3D and their crew getting in his face in front of the bar and Brother Ray telling him off. I honestly thought Frontier was going to cry as he apologized to both of them. On one hand, it was a dick move, on the other it was completely deserved and awesome.

Back on topic, fuck Bagwell.

Don't forget his other tag teams with 2 Cold Scorpio, The Patriot, and Scotty Riggs, with whom he held the WCW World Tag Team titles with.

love it when punters expect guys, especially heels, to "be nice" or not maintain some semblance of kayfabe or their character around them just because they're not performing/it's not their match at the time

Well since I "MADE" this thread with my comments, Ill explain.

I liked Buff early on. I LOVED Viscous and Delicious. Most people here know im a huge Norton mark. LOVED that team. Saw them live a few times. Wanted them to get huge.

My comments, in an ECW themed thread, are being taken out of context.

Sure, Buff is kind of a tool, with tons of funny stories about him. Hell, even Lance Storm has shot on him in a fun way. Youtube it.

That wasnt why I said anything.

My point was to imagine Buff Bagwell showing up in an ECW ring.

There would have been a fucking riot.

That silly hat would be up his ass.

As for the MOM calling stuff, she was his agent. But she was way too over the top. So while Im sure there were a few agents that were the shits, this was funny because he always referred to her as mom.

"Sure Ill have Mom call and book that travel"

Watch Lance Storms take on Buff, some fucking hilarious shit.

Wow...almost cancels out the awesome hats.

No, what cancels out the awesome hats were the obvious reason: premature balding. The hat was neccessary on a guy who's gimmick relied on his looks.

As for the subject at hand, I was a Buff mark too back then. A lot of us may have been. But all the wiser, cynnical smarkiness or any hijinks with his mother aside, there is no way in HELL he'd have been over in ECW. This is mainly because, as it has been previously stated in this thread, his ringwork sucked by and large and he wouldn't have been accepted by the fans, and also previously stated by me a few sentences ago, his gimmick relied pretty much on his looks. Remember who else had that going for him? Tommy Dreamer. And we all know the story of how he had to be stiffed with a kendo stick in public to help him get over that. Buff would have likely punked out.

Norton always struck me as a legitimately scary guy, like he was only wrestling as part of some bizarre work-release program.

No one in their right minds would fuck would Scott Norton.

I still think the "gimmick" where people would randomly find him shaving or some shit, and lie and say "so and so is talking about your mother" was awesome. Leads to Big Scott coming out and kicking ass.

He jsut didnt fit into WCW at the time, and was having so much success in Japan that I dont blame him for not really going all in with WCW. He could have been a star, but not in that WCW cluster fuck.

I still wish Norton would have had a nice ECW run, I think Heyman could have booked him like a pro.
