This wasn't supposed to happen.

Also, this is catchy:

I could go for some coffee right now, too.

Your thoughts on Mr. Hudson, please.

I'd say it's the fact that they are using him in a role that is perfect for him (Ass-kissing, suck-up, lawyer for the heel boss). It's not often enough that they play to people's strengths. In this case, being genuinely dislikable.

Holy shit was thinking about this at work today lol! His ring skills are still terrible, but his lawyer gimmick is great! And the flask is so random and irrelevant yet it adds so much to his character (and what has carrying coffee around with him got to do with being a lawyer).

Guy has looked fucking great though lately, body-wise (no homo).

I don't know honestly. Everybody has their likes for wrestlers. David Otunga is one of the worst of all time in my opinion. I think he's one of the worst in ring competitors of all time. Of course, with more seasoning he could get better but I doubt it. I don't particularly like his gimmick, and I don't think he has good mic skills either. I'll say that I can't really recall a lawyer gimmick as a character (though he is one in real life) so they just went with it. He has no strengths in my book though.

I can't believe you guys are praising him... I mean seriously just a couple months ago everyone on here wanted the dude off their televisions and now your all jumping on the bandwagon? Otunga hasn't improved at all since his nexus days other than getting a slight tweak to his character. (which is nowhere near enough) The guy can't wrestle, and his mic skills are horrid. The only thing he's got going for him is an awesome theme song, and if that were enough then Gangrel would have been a 20 time world champion.

How many years has he been wrestling? Including training, I mean.

Judging a lot of these new guys by how many types of holds they know and how good they are in the ring is sort of like judging six-year-olds at a college level.

Wrestling live is a learning curve. Isn't/wasn't the whole point of Tough Enough and NXT to give young guys a chance to learn the business and also get to be known nationally?

True, but if he's not ready for live shows then he shouldn't be there. Send him back to developmental for a year or so to get up to par. Like you said you shouldn't judge a 6 year old on a college level, but you also shouldn't throw said 6 year old into a Harvard course either.

Even funnier is that the "tweak" to his gimmick is that he's now the black Chris Nowinski. Without nearly as much charisma.

I actually cringed when I saw him put Zeke away with the Sloppy Slam* after he was basically carried in the match by Jackson (which isn't saying much for Otunga's "improved" ringwork) both because it looked unsafe and the fact that this means a push for David. Yes, the character works, and he seems to be that guy in the right place at the right time- but he's the same guy who was ranked so far below Bizzaro Cena and Michael Tarver and now suddenly is getting all this magical love around here.

*As stated before, his spinebuster was once referred to as "a sloppy slam" in an NXT thread, and it has now become the offical finisher name in my head.

As much as I can't stand him, he is pulling off his gimmick and making it work. I will give him credit for that.

I personally hate the damn coffee thing because there is a douche bag at work that walks around with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his coffee tumbler. All he does it walk around and slips coffee. Now I am waiting for him to break into an Otunga pose.

I'm finding David Otunga quite enjoyable lately. The guy is not the best in the ring, but he's getting better. The man was signed to a developmental contract in November 2008. I think he may have commenced his training then and there, with his FCW debut being in May 2009. So the guy has only really been doing this for just over three years.

The WWE would absolutely adore Otunga -- given that he's got an Academy Award Winner for a wife and has been entirely trained by the WWE team. So you better fucking get used to Otunga, because he's one day going to be a World Champion. And when he is ready, I think he will be a damn good one.

I love that on smaller opponents he uses the Emerald Fusion, too. Personally, I think it's a lot better than The Verdict (his spinebuster). I think the hunt for a permanent finisher is still on the go, however.

I'd be curious to see where Otunga goes after WrestleMania. Will John Laurinatis take over both RAW and SmackDown!? If that's the case, then I could eventually see Laurinatis leaving Otunga SmackDown! as a birthday present, or something. What would be more interesting, however, is if Teddy Long took over both shows, and Otunga had to worm his way into keeping a job.

David Otunga also holds a degree in psychology. I'd love to see that come into play one day. He should hand out different cards to people:

David Daniel Otunga, Sr.
Legal Advisor

David Daniel Otunga, Sr.
Mental Specialist

David Daniel Otunga, Sr.
Talent Agent

David Daniel Otunga, Sr.

I think for taking the shot at me, you missed the point.

I don't care that he isn't the next Bret Hart in the ring so much as seeing him deliver a spinebuster to... ANYONE looks less like "thats devistating" and more like "holy shit, is that guy alright? that didn't look too good." Otunga seems like he's running on luck that he hasn't injured anyone yet. He's sloppy in execution, and someone is going to get hurt not from some random, unlucky bad break, but from him being kinda lax with his tosses and slams. I fail to see how this is a bad thing for "Flippy McFlipperflips in the indys because he could hurt someone", but a guy who's in the "major leagues" as it were (and is supposed to be better) gets a pass for not merely asthetically ugly, but dangerously shitty ringwork just because he sips coffee from a Thermos with comedic pretention.

Again, "right place, right time" for Otunga. Can't really fault him for taking advantage of what he's being given. Yes, the kiss-ass gimmick is working for him. Good for him. But how many people that are on Superstars duty right now could pull off this exact gimmick and still be less apt to injure somone in-ring?

It really wasn't a shot at you specifically, but I can see how you would take it that way. Sorry about that. I've encountered a lot of people on these boards over the years who can't stand guys simply based on their ring work, refusing to be entertained by anything else they do.

Can anyone else do Otunga's gimmick better than Otunga right now, though? I'd have to say no. Who else actually is a Harvard graduate with a psychology degree and a practicing lawyer who is married to Jennifer Hudson? You could put those tags on anyone, I suppose, but it wouldn't feel organic at all. He's got a lot to work with, and he's doing well with it, I feel.

Vastardikai

Otunga has a great gimmick, no doubt. I just think it's best for him and the long term safety of everyone who works with him if he just plays the annoying heel on the outside, throwing maybe a punch behind the ref's back at most. As in being a manager. As in NOT WRESTLING. Because he's terrible at wrestling.

I get you. Trust me, I am by no means a "workrate nazi". Don't get me wrong, I love seeing guys and girls that can go. However, I'm the same guy who goes so far as to refer to Gangrel as "The Starmaker", and see Jack Swagger as "Kurt Angle in his prime, only with a lobotomy". I agree that David's out of ring stuff is progressing, and he could be a monster heel manager or some other such character. I don't have so much of an issue with that in and of itself.

What I was getting at is that his success with the coffee and bowtie portions are gaining him a push in-ring. Someone else could be using that push. Was Clarence Mason a real lawyer? Or Harvey Whippleman? This is wrestling. They don't actually HAVE to have a degree, be a real lawyer, or have a name-droppable wife to be portrayed as a weasly legal counsultant.

I love Otunga. Since NXT day one. Look back at the threads. knew he had IT on the mic, and he is still progressing in the ring.

Im all for modern day characters. THE LAWYER makes way more sense today than 1991.

heres the facts: when the bell rings the audience tunes out. so his gimmick isnt "working" as claimed in this thread. people are still not interested in him. mostly because he cant work and to top it off his promos are awful too. being a meme isnt selling tickets or merch no matter how much you wish it was.

guy doesnt have to work like hart and talk like rhodes to be over. he should start by trying to better than linda mcmahon and mike ademle. baby steps. guys hold a coffee mug like a champ tho.

and its good to see his recent push is working on someone, maybe more people will be sweapt up, good booking has gotten a lot of garbage over in the past.

He's playing the character well enough I just don't think he should be wrestling. Also I don't think he should be put over in matches if he has to step into the ring.

I'd like to see Otunga play more of a non-wrestling role, true, but he'll get better in time. You can tell from some of the Tweets the guy has made before that he's a true fan of the business.
