View Full Version : Does Rey Mysterio pretty much have the WWE by the balls?

Apparently their is a money issue with Rey Mysterio and the WWE in terms of him returning.
With the failure of Sin Cara and the lack of a hispanic face, does Rey Mysterio pretty much have the company by the balls? He's such a huge merchandise draw, as well as getting faggot spics like Juan to watch.
Plus, he could easily make a ton of $ wrestling in Mexico, so it's not like he'd starve.
Shouldd the company do everything they can to sign him?

He does. He has had them by the balls for YEARS.
The Guy is their biggest Latin Draw. He sells TONS of merchandise. He can squeeze all the money he wants out of them.

As much as he is out hurt now, I don't think WWE will waste the money on him. I am suprised he isn't one of the part-time contract guys now.
They should give him a new gimmick, call him "booyka" and have him be a sexual predator who attacks WWE divas while yelling BOOYAKA and jumping at them with his crotch :|

And he isn't even half as good as Mysterio. Hopefully, Sin Cara can bounce back from his first run. The crowd seems to be into him, so I don't think WWE should give up on him just yet. He's not the first guy to have a rough start with the company.

exactly..... plus the added publicity he could do in Mexico by speaking Spanish is almost unmeasurable.... He does in fact have WWE by the balls.....

Step One- Keep Rey
Step Two- Give Rey a luchador tag team partner who is bilingual, can work a lucha style as well as the WWE style
Step Three- Give them the tag team titles
Step Four- Drop the tag team titles
Step Five- Give Rey time off for an injury, make it so someone like Del Rio attacked him
Step Six- Have his partner run with the ball and get revenge
Step Seven- Elevate the partner to a predominate singles role while Rey is off
Step Eight- Sell merchandise
Step Nine- Forget about Rey and his weak knees, we have this new guy in his spot who works more and costs less
Step Ten- Don't resign Rey

I guess the question now becomes, is it right for Mysterio to keep squeezing said balls for more money.
Personally I think it's fine. Guy is practically a bionic man, with all the surgeries he's had to get over the years, yet he still goes out there, and performs a dangerous style every night and does it well.
Obviously, there is the merchandise he'll sell, but the other thing is that the guy is good. Really good. Easily one of the best of all time. You have never seen a bad Mysterio match. You've maybe seen some that were only good, or at worst average. But there has never been, to my memory, a bad Mysterio match. Not even HBK can stake that claim.

I say if WWE really wants to appeal to the Latin market, just go on a wide scale luchadore influx. Take the massive paycheck they'd give Rey, spread that evenly among like 5 masked superstars from AAA or CMLL and push which ever one connects with the crowd.

I have never thought of it, but it would be great for AAA if Rey Mysterio returned after he was finished with WWE. It would be f'n HUGE for them. And personally I really like Rey a lot, however seeing him back in Mexico would be preferable to me than him retire in WWE.

In a way, yes considering the WWE waited until very recently to really try to find a real replacement even though it hasn't worked out well with Sin Cara so far. If anything Rey Mysterio's masks are a huge reason considering how great those sell which is something the WWE tried to replicate with Sin Cara.
The only other person who has come close to Rey's Latino popularity was Eddie Guerrero until his untimely death. He was gradually growing in popularity as a face and could have easily passed Rey if he had more time.
They do have Del Rio who was a huge star in Mexico but right now Del Rio likes being a heel after getting tired of being a face for years in Mexico.

I like Rey Rey, and always have done. But he's getting on a bit now and seems to spend more time on the injury list than on the active roster. WWE has been so consistant and exciting the last year, that I've barely noticed Mysterio's absence. So I wouldn't be bothered if he came back or not.
Would be a good move for the company though, since he makes shit loads of money for them.

really think what the wee marketing machine could do with a guy like hernandez is being over looked here. Herandez could be the mexican cena. BUT WHATEVER.
Mistico has hit a rough patch and the fed is likely to give up on him so i kinda write him off at this point despite the fact he IS EXACTLY what they need. just some seasoning on the Fed style of working is all he needs. its not as easy to "dumb down" how you work as people might think. especially going from lucha and thats if you ignore the fact lucha = working in a mirror. regardless they dont really do second tries all to well.

While he isn't quite the performer he once was, he rakes in so much profit through merch alone that signing him to what he's asking should still make good fiscal sense.

He speaks excellent english and spanish , has a unique look, rarely puts on a bad match, and his size relates well to kids. I think he can't be replaced.

Rey Mysterio is definitely a special case, but so is Sin Cara. The WWE simply moved him straight into the limelight way too early. He is legitimately one of the biggest draws in the entire industry, and even in his short time in the WWE has moved a ton of merchandise. The WWE are fools if they pull the plug on Sin Cara so soon. Just don't shoot a wad with him just yet.
I still think Hunico could be great for Hispanic viewership. The guy has a legitimately interesting story that could easily be used to make him a likeable babyface. I've also heard good things about a young guy down in Mexico called Mascara Dorada. He's only 23, but seems pretty incredible. Give him a two years in the developmental system and see how he goes. Rey Mysterio's little cousin is also a professional wrestler. Why not give him a crack?

If he keeps botching and getting injured or failing drug tests then it won't be WWE's fault he doesn't make it. If anything, WWE is pushing Sin Cara in spite of himself.

As much as most of us love Rey, truth be known that his WWE championship wins are always overshadowed by the chosen Super Face. What's the point of him getting the primary title if they keep burying him? He is a main eventer, despite this, and would bring a good tag team championship reign with Sin Cara. One thing I did like about WCW was that every show had one or two Luchadore matches.

I think they would.
Let's say Daniel Bryan retains the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania against Sheamus, in a match that makes Sheamus look like the rightful World Champion. Eg. Bryan goes to take a walk and Sheamus tosses him back into the ring, where he gets blasted by the World Heavyweight Title from Bryan and the referee is forced to call the DQ. Teddy Long comes out and says "That's not happening at WrestleMania, playa!" and makes it No DQ, No Countout on the spot. Sheamus looks like he's about to win when The Miz hits the ring and lays out Sheamus which allows Bryan to get the pin and get out of dodge ("YES! YES! YES!").
Logically you then have Sheamus vs. The Miz and a match like Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton (who could be victorious against Kane at Mania after punting him in the skull and giving Kane some more time off) for the World Title at Extreme Rules. The Miz beats Sheamus when a masked figure helps him out, and then later on the same masked figure helps out The Miz and it's revealed that the two heels simply teamed up to get them victories over their opponents. The Miz is officially then drafted to SmackDown! and at Over the Limit a Fatal 4-Way between Bryan, Miz, Orton and Sheamus is held. Bryan retains the title there when Kane returns and Chokeslams Orton.
I don't know what their plan is for the June PPV, but let's say they call it Vengeance and have Sheamus vs. Miz to decide the #1 Contender for the World Title and have Orton face Kane in some sort of gimmick match (Last Man Standing, perhaps?). Bryan then needs an opponent. Rey Mysterio has always been more of a commodity on SmackDown! than on RAW, so a move back in the draft is not out of the question. At Over the Limit, Mysterio could go over Alberto Del Rio (another guy that I see being drafted), and thus has enough momentum to face Bryan for the World Title at the June PPV.
Ideally, that would be a match that Bryan could actually win cleanly, to continue building an epic heel reign and a string of amazing championship matches.

Maybe I've been in Iop's threads too long, but the only thing I really feel like saying in this thread:
I would totally mark out for a storyline where Rey Mysterio returns to RAW and he wrestles and wins his first match back, as you would expect. But then after the match, a picture of unmasked Rey Mysterio appears on the titantron. Rey is clearly shocked by this. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler could completely play ignorant as to who it is, even. Let people decide in their heads just whether that is Rey Mysterio or not. This goes on for a few weeks, and Michael Cole asks Rey about it, and he doesn't want to comment. Cole says that he's heard rumours that the guy we're seeing on the titantron is the man behind the mask. Rey says that he's not going to respond to this. You could even eventually show footage of Rey out with his family on a picnic or something -- unmasked, and leading people to believe that it is Rey Mysterio. You can have the person behind the footage essentially be anybody.
The psychology behind it seems like something Dean Ambrose could pull-off, claiming that he did it because Rey was unmasked in WCW and betrayed his culture, so now he's going to unmask Mysterio in the WWE. It could be Hunico, whose current character leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. He could bring up Rey's previous demasking, but he could also try and entice Mysterio by claiming that losing his mask was the best thing that ever happened to him. It could even be Kassius Ohno, who will need to debut somehow down the line, and just being a major prick douche could be a great way to do it.
Mr. Nerfect
05-16-2012, 08:16 AM
Bring Dean Ambrose in with a mask to do it. Rey can be all "Who the hell are you?" and Ambrose can respond "Well, who the hell are you?" Ambrose wins a match between the two, shocking the world and handing Mysterio his first loss since Rey's return. Rey then becomes obsessed with knowing who is, well, obsessed with him. Ambrose says that he will put his mask on the line -- as long as Mysterio does the same.
Of course, Rey wins the Mask vs. Mask Match, since there is money in Mysterio's; but in losing, Ambrose still becomes a pretty big deal.
