View Full Version : Forgotten/unused gimmick matches

So i'm watching old ECW matches and just saw the Mexican death match between Mysterio and Psicosis, after each pinfall whoever took the pin has to answer a 10 count or lose the match, not sure if it was a one off match but ive never seen it before/since and thought it could work today, maybe. So basically what other gimmick matches from days gone by do you think could or should be reintroduced, aside from Wargames.

I have vague recollections of the 'double jeopardy' match from ECW,2 seperate matches happening at once in the same ring, always thought that was a cool concept.

The Cruiserweight Open was a weird Gauntlet match. All of the guys were around the ring and they went in a certain order until every man had been defeated but 1.

Have they done another one of these since then? Tag Team Turmoil was a similar concept that always was a good match.

The Kennel From Hell and Tower of Doom were already mentioned. Let's face it, this threat strapped a rocket to the shark and shot it to the moon.
Wut was that WCW one, with a cage on top of a cage on top of a hell in a cell and the winner had to get to the top and get the straight jacket out and put it on the other guy

Scaffold matches
I just watched The Road Warriors DVD where Jim Cornette fell on his ass during one of those. Even as a "smark" it is clear to see that those matches were insanely violent and extremely dangerous.

TNA had their "Elevation X" matches a few years back. Which were basically scaffold matches. I remember at least two. I remember actually enjoying them. I mean, they were terrible "wrestling" matches, but the "story" of the danger and the height was cool.

Three way dance. That way instead of in a triple threat where one pin wins it you can have one pin then the remaining two can battle it out.
ECW did real good with those. WWE should start using those.

Yeah, scaffold matches actually really sucked. There was no action because it's too dangerous, and someone usually ends up legit injuring themselves.
One match I really liked though was the Hardcore Timelimit match they had on an Attitude-Era Wrestlemania. They fucked up the finish in that one instance, but it's still a cool concept.
Battle Bowl was awesome, except with WCW they didn't gimmick it. They really did just pick names out of the blue, which is why several big stars didn't even wrestle that night but job guys made it to the final battle royal. Still, I would love to see it re-done.
But honestly, I'd just be happy with a good Falls Count Anywhere match. I miss the days with Cactus Jack, Abdullah the Butcher & Terry Funk when they would take those matches around the entire arena. They'd suplex the popcorn guy and toss each other into the merch stand. I remember one when Cactus and Abdullah ended up outside of the arena in some kind of horse stable. Really fun stuff.

I liked the way TNA did their Gauntlets. It was basically timed Battle Royal rules (like a Royal Rumble), but the last two guys would have to face each other in a straight-up "one fall to a finish" match.
Scramble Matches were OK, but I don't like the idea of them being for a title. I'd much rather they were just done occasionally, perhaps to crown a contender.
