If when CC and Andy come back, the Yankees are still in first, watch out. Ain't no one overtaking them for the AL East Title if that happens.
I wish the Orioles can hang around long enough for the Wild Card or something. Not because I'm an Oriole fan, but because I am a Buck Showalter fan.
Our pitching has been getting better. I truly believe that we will still be in first place when CC returns. Now, Andy it's gonna be hard to say. Come hell or high water I truly believe we will end up in first place. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if we lay all the chips down for a Hamels piece. I mean it would be a one year rental but still I think the Phillies are like in 4th place. It would be a major haul for the Phillies. And maybe he wouldn't be worth all the talent we give up for one year. But, I truly think it could be a possibility.

With the All Star Game rosters being announced on Sunday, I went ahead and did my annual roster prediction. I kept off injured guys like Kemp, Dempster, etc. in hopes that, while they get named to the team, their replacements are named almost immediately. Kinda doubt it but whatever. As it is a bunch of the pitchers will probably be replaced due to the Sunday rule:
National League
Batters
2B: Jose Altuve, Houston Astros
OF: Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals
OF: Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers
OF: Melky Cabrera, San Francisco Giants
SS: Starlin Castro, Chicago Cubs
SS: Ian Desmond, Washington Nationals
3B: David Freese, St. Louis Cardinals
SS: Rafael Furcal, St. Louis Cardinals
1B: Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondbacks
OF: Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies
3B: Chase Headley, San Diego Padres
OF: Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals
OF: Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates
C: Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals
2B: Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati Reds
C: Buster Posey, San Francisco Giants
C: Carlos Ruiz, Philadelphia Phillies
OF: Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins
1B: Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds
3B: David Wright, New York Mets
Pitchers
Matt Cain, RHP, San Francisco Giants
Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Cincinnati Reds
Johnny Cueto, RHP, Cincinnati Reds
R.A. Dickey, RHP, New York Mets
Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Washington Nationals
Cole Hamels, LHP, Philadelphia Phillies
Joel Hanrahan, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates
Clayton Kershaw, LHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Craig Kimbrel, RHP, Atlanta Braves
Lance Lynn, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals
Wade Miley, LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Jonathan Papelbon, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies
Stephen Strasburg, RHP, Washington Nationals
Final Vote Candidates
Madison Bumgarner, LHP, San Francisco Giants
Chris Capuano, LHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Zack Greinke, RHP, Milwauke Brewers
Kyle Lohse, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals
James McDonald, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates
THOUGHTS: I don’t think there are any MAJOR snubs in the hitting department. I nearly left out Carlos Ruiz because I think Buster Posey will win the fan vote and Yadier Molina will surely be voted in by his peers. But as much as I hate the Phillies, Ruiz is just having way too good a year and shouldn’t be snubbed in favor of forcing a third 2nd baseman onto the team or something, sorry Aaron Hill/Omar Infante. Only one backup 1B as well, but that’s fine because Votto should really be playing most, if not all, of the game anyway.
But that pitching…holy shit. As it is, I think several of the guys in the final vote have better cases than some guys I have on the final roster. But I tried to figure out who the players were most likely to vote for, as they do elect 5 starters and 3 relievers. Players often don’t really pay attention to the stats and go based on reputation so that explains guys like Kershaw and Papelbon, while good, getting in despite others having better years (such as Santiago Casilla). Also there’s always a token homer pick and I see no way La Russa doesn’t take one of Lynn or Lohse with the other being on the final vote. Feel terrible for not having room on the Final Vote ballot for Vogelsong, Santana, etc. Almost makes me wish there’d be fewer than 5 relievers, but 5 seems to be the norm. If the NL gets a lead, look out.
American League

SS: Alcides Escobar, Kansas City Royals
1B: Prince Fielder, Detroit Tigers
OF: Curtis Granderson, New York Yankees
OF: Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers
SS: Derek Jeter, New York Yankees
2B: Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers
1B: Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox
C: Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins
C: Mike Napoli, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
DH: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox
C: A.J. Pierzynski, Chicago White Sox
OF: Josh Reddick, Oakland Athletics
OF: Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
OF: Mark Trumbo, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Pitchers
Jonathan Broxton, RHP, Kansas City Royals
Yu Darvish, RHP, Texas Rangers
Jim Johnson, RHP, Baltimore Orioles
Jason Hammel, RHP, Baltimore Orioles
Felix Hernandez, RHP, Seattle Mariners
Joe Nathan, RHP, Texas Rangers

Fernando Rodney, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays
Chris Sale, LHP, Chicago White Sox
Justin Verlander, RHP, Detroit Tigers
Jered Weaver, RHP, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
C.J. Wilson, LHP, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Final Vote Candidates
Matt Harrison, LHP, Texas Rangers
Austin Jackson, OF, Detroit Tigers
Jason Kipnis, 2B, Cleveland Indians
Rafael Soriano, RHP, New York Yankees
Josh Willingham, OF, Minnesota Twins
THOUGHTS: There is just a shitload of power on this team – almost to a fault with a bunch of swing and miss type of players, especially Adam Dunn who I see being voted in even though the idea of a guy with a sub-.220 batting average is a bit of a joke. If they need a backup DH, it should be Edwin Encarnacion. Also there is no way Mike Napoli should be anywhere near an All Star team this year, but he had an enormous lead in the voting and is pretty much a lock to start as a result. All in all it’s an intriguing bunch of hitters up against the insane NL pitching.
The pitching was pretty straightforward. Matt Harrison is probably the biggest snub and might be more deserving than Darvish, but I think Darvish would get in based on “name” value if nothing else. Whichever of the two doesn’t make it will wind up as a Final Vote candidate anyway. With the game being played in Kansas City I could see Broxton being the team’s officially designated 9th inning guy regardless of the score.

Cook pitched probably the best game out of any game pitched so far by the Red Sox with his 81 pitch complete game against the Ms. New lowest for a complete game this season by about 7-8 pitches.
Bard is struggling badly in Pawtucket now from the bullpen. Small fear of this season making it back-to-back years he's struggled.

Meanwhile, in the AL Final Vote - Yu Darvish figures to win in a landslide with the Japanese vote plus the fact that Rangers players raked in huge vote numbers this year with every Rangers player finishing top 5 in voting.
The NL Vote will come down to Bryce Harper vs. Chipper Jones. Michael Bourn is on the ballot as well but I don't think it will split the Atlanta votes - no way any Braves fan wouldn't vote for Chipper.

I'm amazed at how much shit the Giants fans are getting from baseball writers and the media around the country. Not just Sandoval, but the fact that Belt, Crawford, Schierholtz, and even Sanchez (who hasn't even played this year) all got really close to starting the game. Would have been funny to see if Selig stepped in and voided out some of the selections, much like what happened when the entire Reds lineup was elected to start way back in the day - which led to the end of the fan vote for a while.
All it really shows is that they are either dedicated or don't have much of a life. Those ballots are tedious as hell and as much as I'd have liked to see Wright start I certainly wasn't about to spend 20 minutes per day voting for him.
I didn't even do a ballot this year because the voting has reached the point where if you don't utilize all 25 ballots you're allowed per day, your one vote is gonna ultimately be meaningless.

Never really rebounded back from his first 2-3 great years. Still remember him and a young Beckett pulling off the upset and taking down the Yankees in the 2003 World Series.
MLB's fan voting isn't as bad as the NBA's one but all it really needs is a few tweaks such as a minimum amount of games needed to qualify or start the ballot later in the season with a list of qualified players instead of at the start. You still get the big markets dominating the voting and players getting voted because of their names but you'd reduce players going who barely played so far in the season.

Also, fuck the Reds and the Brewers. Especially Cinci. They have 3 guys, and Dusty Baker is pissed that they weren't able to send 2 more, which would've made it 5 Reds players in the NL roster. And Dusty bringing up old shit like "Oh, LaRussa didn't invite 2 Cueto and Phillips because of a brawl we hade back in 2010". I wonder how the Dodgers and their fans feel about Kemp being out for so long and not helping the team, yet participating in the Home Run Derby.
I'd be pissed if my team's star player missed a lot of time, couldn't help the team as they went through a rough stretch, yet participated in the Derby.

Why wouldn't the Pirates trade for Garza right now? Better yet, Dempster, a veteran having the best year if his career. Ive seen the Pirates AAA team multiple times. They're deep. The Pirates never go all in. This is the most wide open NL in a long time and the most the Pirates will do is trade for someone like Carlos Quentin. That's such a.Pirate move. Garrett Cole, Jameison Tallion and Starlin Marte for Garza! Do it!
Evil Vito
07-05-2012, 09:31 AM
While I still think the Mets can implode at any moment primarily due to their bullpen, they've had a far better first half than I thought possible. Genuinely thought they'd have the Phillies' current record at this point. No matter what happens - its been some seriously fun baseball the first few months. I imagine Pirates fans feel similar except for the added pressure of 20 straight losing seasons.
Evil Vito
07-05-2012, 09:34 AM
That being said I'm not sure the Pirates should mortgage the future. They finally seem willing to lock up their young guys. Even if they fade this year they're in a great position to compete for years once their top prospects arrive next year.
They've had a 20 year losing stretch, and the sense I get from Bucs fans is that they'd rather wait another year or two if they have to for long term success.
But they could seriously win the National League this year. A.J Burnett won't be pitching like this next year. Take advantage. Tell me the Pirates don't win the N.L if they add Greinke and maybe Lahair/Dejesus combo platter.
The Phillies will be great next year. The Marlins should be great. The Reds are stacked. St Louis is a year away from bringing up some heavy arms. This is the year.

Vid of Greinke's ejection for those who didn't see it. What a joke. That ump probably needs to be suspended or at least fined. Greinke wasn't even arguing, just frustrated with himself.
Totally unnecessary. A guy spends 4 days preparing for a start, so for an umpire to throw him out after 4 pitches because he feels the pitcher is "showing him up" is a disgrace.

Don't think he should have been ejected but it was still a dumb move on Grienke's part. If that ball takes a bad bounce, he could have cost his team an extra base. It was a tie at the base anyway. Gotta give Altuve the hustle credit.

Jordany Valdespin is playing CF today. If he ends up looking even remotely competent out there I could see him being the primary CF against righties the rest of the way. Captain Kirk is brilliant defensively but he's come crashing down at the plate and has started to look vastly overmatched.
I hope Rizzo has a big game to close it out before all star break. He could be hitting .400 and carrying a 9 game hitting streak. This guy looks and feels like he's going to be one of the great Cubs ever.

Rizzo's played about 2 weeks or something, and he almost has better numbers than "The Chosen One" Bryce Harper.
I wouldn't go that far. Give it a few weeks.
13 hits in July. Probably the most of anyone.

I wouldn't go that far. Give it a few weeks.
Rizzo's got 4 HR's, Harper has 8. So at least in HR's (and Batting Average), Rizzo's catching up to him quickly.
Prediction: Rizzo will end up with more HR's, RBI's and a better BA than Harper.

It really is time for Shane to go. He's been the #1 reason by most around here for the Phillies' failures. He smiles walking off the field when his team is getting crushed and then does this shit. Looking forward to the Dom Brown return.

Reading the Phillies' message board is hilarious. So many people calling for Amaro and Manuel to be fired. Saying this next year would be one thing, but when you're having your first losing season in a decade, the first in the Amaro/Manuel era, and after 5 straight division titles it's kinda laughable.
I heard Dominic Brown is playing like dog shit in the minors.

All Star lineups are gonna be announced at some point on Monday afternoon. Gonna go ahead and try to predict what TLR and Wash go with:
NL:
LF Cabrera
RF Beltran
1B Votto
DH Braun
CF McCutchen
C Posey
3B Sandoval
2B Uggla
SS Furcal
P Strasburg
Braun and McCutchen are the easy choices for the DH spot and Kemp replacement, respectively. The bottom of that lineup is just unbelievably weak. I hope TLR bats Furcal 9th as he should be rather than forcing him into the leadoff spot. With the pitching I still think Dickey should get the start. He's been the best pitcher in the NL, has an incredible story, and may never get this chance again whereas Strasburg and Cain have plenty of All Star Games left in them. But in any event I see La Russa wimping out and saving Dickey for the middle innings when division rival Carlos Ruiz is in the game to catch.
AL:
SS Jeter
CF Granderson
LF Hamilton
RF Bautista
DH Ortiz
3B Beltre
2B Cano
1B Fielder
C Napoli
P Verlander
Just a ridiculous amount of power in this lineup. I see Washington splitting up the lefties and righties in the middle. This one was a lot harder to put together. The only lock is that Napoli hits last as he really shouldn't be there to begin with. I'm guessing that Verlander and Weaver will be the first two pitchers in and Verlander getting the starting nod is really just a hunch more than anything else.
As an added bonus - if the managers announce their official closer ahead of time I'd guess Kimbrel and Nathan.

Guarantee you in his presser that he says it's because of the knuckleball and the fact that he doesn't have anybody who can catch it.
Nothing against Cain either, but he's got plenty of All Star Games ahead of him. I think Dickey will be good for years, but THIS good? Not as safe of a bet. It's a shame.

The thing I worry about now is that Dickey may not get to pitch at all. The last 3 knuckleballers to make the ASG never got into the game for the same reason. No catcher could handle it.

You have Jose Bautista, Prince Fielder, Robinson Cano and Mark Trumbo going for the AL, and Carlos Beltran, Carlos Gonzalez, Matt Kemp and Andrew McCutchen going for the NL.
It should be a good one, I'll definitely watch. And Kauffman Stadium is beautiful.

Yankees to Mr. October: Stay away
http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/8144460/reggie-jackson-barred-new-york-yankees-events-sources-say
After Reggie Jackson's disparaging comments about Alex Rodriguez and others last week, he was essentially benched by the Yankees and told to stay away from team events indefinitely, according to AL sources.
Jackson was not in Boston over the weekend, where the Yankees played the Red Sox.

Jackson, a special advisor the Yankees, usually is around the team.
But at this time, there is enough anger at the Hall of Famer from within the organization that the team has decided that he should keep his distance until otherwise determined.
Jackson spent Friday apologizing to Rodriguez and Yankees hierarchy, officials with knowledge of the conversations told ESPNNewYork.com.
Jackson contacted A-Rod, manager Joe Girardi and Yankees officials to apologize for the comments he made in last week's edition of Sports Illustrated. Rodriguez confirmed Jackson called him, but declined to reveal the nature of the talk.
"We're going to keep that very private," Rodriguez said Friday.
Rodriguez and Jackson have been friends for years, which caused the third
baseman to joke about the comments.
"With friends like that, who needs enemies," Rodriguez said.

He said that you've got to think ARod's numbers may be tainted because of his admitted steroid use, that if ARod or Bonds or Clemens ever get voted into the HOF the majority of the HOF'ers won't attend the ceremony, etc.
